Music 395B: Rote Teaching Lesson Plan


1) Introduce song:
-Tell silly bug story
-Tell them the title, Little Black Bug

2) Play through the entire melody for students either arco or pizzicato on the violin.
-Focus on intonation and clarity of rhythm.
-Listen to me play the melody on the violin and hum along in your heads if you
think you can!
3) Have students sing along while I sing the full melody on La.
-Now that youve heard the melody, lets try and sing it together on the La.
4) Have students sing along while I sing full melody on the fingerings.

-Now that weve sung through the melody together, lets start applying this to
string playing! Sing the melody along with me on the fingerings.
-Ex: Zero= Oh l= One, etc... Refer to page 1.
5) Have students listen and repeat 2 measure phrases of the melody after me on
pizzicato.
- Id like for you all to repeat after me
Without explanation, go right into step 6 >
6) Have students listen and repeat 4 measure phrases of the melody after me on
pizzicato.
-If they are not ready to play full melody alone, repeat this step.
7) Have students play through full melody on pizzicato by themselves.
-I think that you are all ready to play this melody by yourselves!
- 1-2-3-4-5-6 count-off
8) Accompany students on the piano as they play through the entire melody on
pizzicato.
9) Play through the entire bass line for students either arco on the violin.
-Focus on intonation and clarity of rhythm.
-Listen to me play the bass line on the violin and hum along in your heads if you
think you can!
10) Have students sing along while I sing the full bass line on Do, Fa, & Sol.
-Now that youve heard the bass line, lets try and sing it together using solfege.
11) Have students sing along while I sing full bass line on the string names.
-Now that weve sung through the bass line together, lets start applying this to
our string playing! Sing the bass line along with me on the string names.
-String names will differ between instruments. That is okay!
12) Have students listen and repeat 2 measure phrases of the bass line after me using
arco.
- Id like for you all to repeat after me

13) Have students listen and repeat 4 measure phrases of the bass line after me using
arco.
-If they are not ready to play full bass line alone, repeat this step.
14) Have students play through full bass line using arco by themselves. (no accomp)
-I think that you are all ready to play this bass line by yourselves!
- 1-2-3-4-5-6 count-off
15) Have students play the melody and bass line together (no accomp)
-Split up the students evenly by rows, columns, shirt color, gender, hair color,
....anything!
-Do this multiple times so that everyone has a chance to play both parts.
16) Do creative activity using the song!
-Split class into two voice parts. Give them a hand sign (raised hand) when you
want them to switch to the other part.
-Bring in 10 half paper sized musical adjectives (angry, flowing, light) and put
them faced down in a pile.
-Have Dr. Gardner come up and assist me in being the guesser
-I will instruct the students to play the music so that it sounds like the word that
Dr. Gardner is holding up. Your job is to convince him so that he can guess as
quickly as possible!
-Conduct in the manner of the descriptive word and give appropriate hand sign
when we are about half way through the activity.
