Started whole group with a review

of the Read to Self Rules to remind
students of the expected
behaviors. Read aloud "Corduroy"
to work on comprehension
strategies and expand vocabulary.
Reviewed rotations for the day;
sent students to their groups.

Miss Whetzel's small group focused on

reading their leveled reader to
demonstrate comprehension and
concept of word. Miss Whetzel listened
to each child read and encouraged
them to sound out words and use their
reading strategies. After reading
leveled readers, students were given a
writing prompt to complete "If I could fly
in an airplane, I would..."

Planning was thorough and

contained all areas assessed
during Reading on a weekly
basis. Plans were
differentiated for each of
three groups that rotated
through Miss Whetzel's
table.

Miss Whetzel monitored students as

they switched groups during the
reading rotation. She reminded them of
the expected behaviors and students
were much more compliant than they
had been earlier in the week. Miss
Whetzel also monitored students who
were working independently at Daily 5
stations - she gave reminders as
needed to ensure that these students
remained on task.

Miss Whetzel was clear in giving

instructions and gave clear
expectations for student work and
behavior. The leveled readers that
Miss Whetzel chose for this week tied
into the weeks unit theme
"transportation". The writing prompt
also tied the leveled readers to the unit
theme. Miss Whetzel asked questions
to guide the students in their writing;
she encouraged them to sound out
their words while writing. More
assistance was given to the lower level
groups than to the higher group in
order to facilitate the writing process.

Collected student writing to be

graded. Reflects on each lesson
to adjust timing and techniques this has helped to develop
management techniques that
work for specific students as well
as for whole group.

Miss Whetzel always

conducts herself in a
professional manner. Her
relationship with the students
continues to grow stronger
and she is successfully
making the transition to lead
teacher in all subjects.

SuggestionsforContinuingProfessionalDevelopment:AreasofStrengthandAreasforGrowth
Areas of strength:
- tying leveled readers and writing prompt to unit theme
- Good reinforcement of expectations during read to self time
- good timing and pacing of groups
- good management while teaching one group and monitoring another group at stations
Growth:
- remember to use Cardinal Cash throughout lessons not just at whole group time (can give at table for following directions,
writing a perfect sentence, etc. Maybe try putting CC in your pockets or name badge so it is more accessible and ready to use)
