Competency Reflections

Competency 001
The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the development,
articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared
and supported by the school community.
Part of my learning for this competency was participating in different
functions. I collaborated in student council throughout the year. Parents and
students are strongly united in supporting student council. During the winter we
had hot cocoa served for the school. Currently we are selling star grams to support
intermediate grades with their assessments. Parents, students, as well as
community members are encouraged to send positive messages to testers.
Competency 002
The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all members of the
school community, respond to diverse interests and needs, and mobilize resources
to promote student success.
During the school year I have participated in Curriculum Night for our
parents. This is a time designated to communicate to parents the concepts being
taught and expectations of their child. I served as the bilingual person helping the
Spanish speaking parents. Parents felt comfortable in asking questions. I believe
they appreciate a diverse staff.
Competency 003
The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical and legal
manner.
One of the major legal formalities I have partaken in is the special education
meetings and LPAC meetings. Through these meetings I have witness how
important it is to know disclosures and to maintain student confidentiality.
Competency 004
The principal knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of curricula
and
strategic plans that enhance teaching and learning; ensure alignment of curriculum,
instruction, resources, and assessment; and promote the use of varied assessments
to measure student performance.
I believe this is my favorite competency. I did various students analyzing data
through self-made assessments and district assessments, together I was able to see
similar trends and formulating a plan for student needs. I also created the idea of
teacher rotations for students to learn math concepts with other math teachers.
Competency 005
The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and sustain an instructional program
and a campus culture that are conducive to student learning and staff professional

growth.
I participated in a book study club. Teachers were given choices through
various book titles. This was a creative way for teachers and administrators to share
dialogue on students. Our book club was with the book, Youve Gotta Connect.
Through this experience I observed teachers engagement by given a choice of book
study to participate in depending on their need. The book study was also credit for
professional development hours. It was a creative way for the campus to learn and
reflect on theories to support campus goals.
Competency 006
The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation and development system
to
improve the performance of all staff members, select and implement appropriate
models for supervision and staff development, and apply the legal requirements for
personnel management.
I evaluated my colleague for a sample observation using a model similar to
the T-TESS. It allowed for me to be able to give feedback as well as compliment the
teachers strengths. Through this process, I learned how teachers always feel
uncomfortable being observed by supervisor. I tried to ease the process by
conducting a pre-observation meeting to let know the teacher know what I was
going to observe. This also allowed us to discuss the lesson being taught prior to
observation.
Competency 007
The principal knows how to apply organizational, decision-making, and problem
solving
skills to ensure an effective learning environment.
Through various learnings in this internship program, I was able to bring a
new team together and develop supportive professional relationships. I was able to
encourage my team and strive for cohesiveness among our team. This enabled us
to become the most flexible team.
Competency 008
The principal knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and
management
in relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial
management, and technology use.
I need more experience for this competency 008. I was able to have a
meeting with the campus principal. We discussed the budgeting process. The
district supports building principals in effective budget planning. The schools utilizes
budget for attaining campus goals.
Competency 009
The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership and management to the
campus physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning
environment.

During the course of this internship, I participated in after-school duties to


ensure students safety via our dismissal procedures. I was in charge of the cafeteria
for bus duties. I think it can be more effective by dismissing according to location
area and grade level. It is still a work in progress.
