Spaghetti Supper Served May 7 at First Brethren Church

Pleasant Hill First Brethren Church invites you to the 4th Annual
Spaghetti Supper! This years menu is spaghetti with meat sauce,
salad, cheddar garlic biscuits, and desserts. Donations will be
accepted. Proceeds will be used to send youth to summer church
camp.

Fort Rowdy Gathering to Hold Mothers Day BBQ

The Fort Rowdy Gathering will have their annual Mothers Day
Chicken BBQ on Sunday, May 8, in Covington Park, from 11 a.m. until
sold out. No need to get out of your car we'll come to your car window!
Advance tickets are recommended, as last years BBQ was a sell-out.
Cost is $8 and includes a half-chicken, chips, applesauce, and a roll.
Drinks will be available for purchase.
Advance tickets may be purchased at Joanies Flower Shop or Siegels
Country Store, both in Covington, Uniforms Plus in Piqua, or from any
Fort Rowdy Board member. Advance tickets are valid until 3 p.m.
Proceeds from this event will benefit the 2016 Fort Rowdy Gathering,
to be held Labor Day weekend.

Annual Plant Swap Planned

Saturday at Bradford Library
Creating a Fairy Garden Featured
The Annual Plant Swap Workshop at the Bradford Public Library on
Saturday, May 7, will feature Master Gardener Mary Groves on the topic
of Creating Your Own Fairy Garden! Mary, who became an Ohio State
Miami Master Gardener in 2015, is from the Troy area. She enjoys working with flowers, and yes, even weeding relaxes her. She has had a fairy
garden for about 10 years. One of her first family traditions came on
Mothers Day, when her three granddaughters helped her set out the
fairies and gnomes. She has a small area in her yard that is devoted totally to fairy gardening and she also loves to make fairy and gnome container
gardens, as well. At this presentation geared for all ages Mary will
share a few of them with you! She has been heard to say, When working
with fairies, dont be surprised if a little fairy dust gets left on your fingers.
If you have a child, grandchild, or you are a kid of any age, this
would be a perfect presentation to attend. Youll want to keep busy this
summer and here is a grand way to do it! The workshop will begin at
10:30 a.m. in the librarys Community Room.
Someone will also be on hand to answer your gardening questions.
Dont forget that you can bring or take home different types of seeds,
cuttings, and a wide variety of different plants. The time for dropping off
these plants will begin at 9:30 a.m. The library would like to have everyones offerings by 10 a.m. when the swap begins. The Plant Swap is
open from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., with raffle tickets sold for fifty cents or
$2 for five. Some of the raffle prizes are currently on display at the library.

A "Cruise-In" is planned as part of Pleasant Hills Sesquicentennial

Celebration on Saturday, June 25. Bring your car, truck, or tractor
there is no entry fee! The first 75 entries will receive a dash plaque. You
can also drive in the parade. Line-up for the parade (9 a.m.) starts at the
south end of town at the Sunoco station. Parade will begin at 9:30 sharp!
Then, a parking place will be found for you on Tony Fessler Dr.,
just off Locust St., near the soccer fields. It's going to be a wonderful
way to spend your Saturday!

Hug the Earth Festival Scheduled

May 14 At Stillwater Prairie Reserve
The Miami County Park District will hold its Annual Hug the
Earth Festival on Saturday, May 14, 12 to 5 p.m., at Stillwater Prairie
Reserve, 9750 St. Rt. 185, Covington.
At noon, the Banana Slug String Band will perform their popular songs like Dirt Made My Lunch and Water Cycle Boogie.
Beginning at 1 p.m., enjoy archery, geocaching, canoeing on the
pond, a rock pile dig, face painting, gnome-fairy house building, a
petting zoo, food, and more. Don't miss out on the outdoor adventure
activities with the rock-climbing wall, zip line, tree climbing, and
high ropes course.

Defibrillator Donated to MUPL by Miami Co. Foundation

The Milton-Union Public Library is now even more prepared for
emergencies. Thanks to the generosity of the Miami Co. Foundation,
the library has acquired a Zoll AED-Plus to use in a health crisis. The
Automated External Defibrillator unit is an interactive device that
informs the user verbally on what steps to take to hopefully resuscitate unconscious individuals.
Five library staff members also have current CPR certification for
more effective, confident use of the device.
Although the grant was given in December, the library waited to
order the AED until a sufficient number of staff members could be
trained in CPR. The AED device is now mounted on the wall behind
the circulation desk for easy access.

Ohio Young Birders Club to Meet at BNC May 7

Brukner Nature Centers Young Birders Club meets once a month. This club is geared just for students in grades 6-12 with an interest in birding. Binoculars and field guides are provided for meetings and
field trips, so no additional equipment is needed.
Join the Young Birders May 7 as they take the time to enjoy one of the most exciting birding events
of the year, known around the world as The Biggest Week in Birding at Magee Marsh in northern Ohio.
This event is highlighted by the small yet brilliantly colored warblers making their way back toward
Canada for nesting season. These birds use the area as a refueling spot before crossing Lake Erie, causing
a large number and variety of birds in a fairly small area, increasing the chances of finding something
cool!

Owls & Howls Hike Offered

Friday at Area Reserve
The Miami County Park District will hold an Owls & Howls
Hike on Friday, May 6, 9 p.m., at Maple Ridge Reserve, 10430 St.

Girl Scout Badge Programs Planned

The Miami County Park District will hold its Girl Scout badge
program Daisy Rose Petal on Sunday, May 22, 1 p.m., at
Stillwater Prairie Reserve, 9750 St. Rt. 185 in Covington.
Participants can come out and work on their Rosie Petal badge while
learning how to make the world a better place by planting native
wildflowers and plants to help local ecosystems. This program can
be used towards service project hours.
Also, the Park District will hold its Girl Scout Hiker Badge
program that same day, at 3 p.m. at the Reserve. Participants will
explore the woods and look for wildlife on this afternoon hike. Make
sure to wear sturdy shoes for hiking.

Tracy Roberts Recognized as Music Educator of Excellence

Tracy Roberts, a 1995 graduate of Newton High School, was recently recognized as a Music
Educator of Excellence by the Country Music Association Foundation. Finalists were selected by
the CMA Foundation for their commitment to music education in public schools. She received a
personal cash prize and was to be recognized with other national winners in April.
Roberts was earlier awarded a CMA Foundation grant for the purchase of instruments and educational materials for her classroom. She worked with the CMA Foundation and their 2015 national spokesperson, Luke Bryan, to produce a series of public service announcements with her students
and their parents to promote the importance of music in the classrooms of public schools. They were
featured during the annual CMA Fest this past summer.
The CMA Foundation raises funds through sponsors and country music artists who donate their
time and talents so that all proceeds can be used to promote music programs to benefit students in
K-12 nationwide.
After her graduation from Newton High School, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in
Classical Performance, and Education degree from Belmont University. She earned her Masters
degree from Trevecca College. Roberts has taught elementary music education for Metro Nashville
Public Schools for 16 years.
Tracy and her husband Chris reside in Antioch, Tennessee. Her proud parents are Cindy and
Terry Favorite of Pleasant Hill.

Ella Rose, Special Guest For The Weekend

Our oldest grandchild is 31. Our youngest grandchild is seven.
Why am I telling you this?
There is a vast difference, between the two ages. Ginger and I hosted Ella Godfrey over the
weekend. Shes the seven year old.
From the time she entered the door it was non-stop action. We played Yahtzee, Candy Land,
and worked a three million-piece puzzle. As soon as we were finished, Ella asked Grandma
to time us as we repeated the task. All I could contribute was to find all the straight end
pieces. I looked over at Ella and she looked like a street con maneuvering the puzzle pieces
as quickly as she could.
Finished! She shouted.
Six minutes, grandma replied.
Lets do it again grampie, she announced.
No, lets play something else, l pleaded.
Okay, lets play the quarter game, she revealed. Ill get the quarters from your money
jar.
We played what seemed like hours, but were actually three games. Of course, Ella won.
Grandma, can you get me a plastic bag, so I can take my quarters home, she asked.
What do you want to do now? She interjected.
Why dont you and Grampie read a book, Grandma offered.
I then nodded my head and winked at the same time. I suggested that I would read the left
hand pages, and Ella could read the right hand pages. To be honest, I really havent done
much of this, because Ginger usually handles this kind of job. Ella is in the first grade. I
thought the book would be a little tough for her, but was I wrong. She stopped for some
words, but finally figured them out on her own while peeking at me for affirmation. About
half way through, I suggested we take a break and head for the kitchen for a brownie that
GG had just made.
The following day we met the remainder of the family at a nearby Red Lobster for a grand
feast and a chance to be with JRs entire family. This included JR, his wife Lainie, and Trey
their newest teenager.
ThiS WEEkS boTTom LiNE: I forgot all the card games we played. We even learned
a new game called salute the King. Its a great card game for little kids. Just Google it and
wait for all the laughter to start. I found out I wasnt any good at this game either.
I love music of all kinds, but there's no greater music than the sound of my grandchildren
or great grandchildren laughing. ~ Sylvia Earle
