Myreviewwillbeoverarticle1listedabove:A Revision of Bloom's Taxonomy:
An Overview.
Krathwohl recognizes the various applications for Blooms
Taxonomy in the realm of education. Blooms Taxonomy is helpful for
the classification of educational goals and objectives, and even the
development of standards in educational fields. As always, condensing
all educational material and all individuals into taxonomy has its
shortcomings in making miscalculations in generalization. Krathwohls
most important critique of Blooms Taxonomy is its overly simplified
and ridged hierarchy. Krathwohl has proposed a revision of Blooms
original taxonomy in hopes to update some of its outdated aspects and
provide a less ridged hierarchy for the educational categories.
Krathwohl has proposed a two-dimensional hierarchy structured
around knowledge and cognitive processes. The knowledge category
is similar to the subcategories of the original knowledge category,
while the cognitive processes category is comprised of the original six
categories of Blooms Taxonomy. Krathwohl made some name changes
to Blooms original work in order to make the hierarchy seem more
simple and inviting to both students and teachers alike. Such changes
include changing knowledge to remember and comprehension to
understand. These changes seem insignificant, but they can make a
huge difference to the average user.
Perhaps the biggest change to the taxonomy is Krathwohls
newly formed taxonomy table. This table lines up each subcategory of
knowledge as the domain with the subcategories of the cognitive
processes lined as the range. Teachers can use this table effectively
while planning a lesson so that they can place each lesson in the
correct spot on the grid and ensure each type of knowledge is paired
with each cognitive process. This 4x6 table is a useful tool in the
teachers arsenal to ensure material is properly presented by the
teacher and therefore properly absorbed by the student. What
Krathwohl has attempted to do with Blooms Taxonomy is to refine it
and recognize the relationship between each type of knowledge and
each kind of cognitive process.
