Adverbs of manner - Los adverbios de modo
Un adverbio de modo modifica un verbo y nos dice algo sobre la manera en que se realiza la
acción. Este tipo de adverbios responde a la pregunta how? (cómo). Se suele formar añadiendo
la terminación -ly a un adjetivo. Los adverbios normalmente van detrás del verbo.
Adjetivo adverbio
Slow (lento) Slowly (lentamente)
Quick (rápido) Quickly (rápidamente)
Bad (malo) Badly ( mal)
2) Casos especiales
• Los adjetivos que acaban en consonante+le pierden la -e y añaden –ly
comfortable comfortably
terrible terrible
• Los adjetivos que acaban en -y, cambian la -y en -i antes de añadir la terminación -ly.
happy happily
noisy noisily
• Los adjetivos que acaban en -ic añaden –ally= tragic tragically
• Los adjetivos que acaban en -l doblan la -l = Beautiful Beautifully
3) Adverbios irregulares
• El adjetivo good (bueno) se convierte en well (bien)
He is a good dancer. He dances well.
• Fast (rápido), late (tarde), straight (recto), early (temprano) y hard (duro) mantienen
la misma forma para el adjetivo y el adverbio. Su uso depende de su posición en la frase.
x She has must stay at home x She has had to stay at home ( Ella ha tenido q quedarse en casa).
ALGUNOS VERBOS MODALES
A. CAN/ COULD = Poder
A.1 Conjugación
• Afirmativa: sujeto + can + verbo sin “ to” : He can go now (él puede ir ahora)
• Negativa : sujeto + cannot/can’t + verbo sin “ to” : he can’t go now (él no puede ir ahora)
• Interrogativa : can + sujeto + verbo sin “ to”: Can he go now? (¿Puede ir ahora?)
A.2 usos
• AFIRMATIVA
1) Habilidad/ capacidad en el presente o en el pasado. se traduce por “saber”
I can swim ( yo sé nadar)
I could swim when I was five ( yo sabía nadar cuando tenía 5 años)
2) Posibilidad: Can (más real); could (más remota)
the bus can arrive late ( el autobús puede retrasarse)
the bus cuold arrive late ( el autobús podría retrasarse)
3) Dar permiso ;
You can leave now ( puedes irte ahora)
• NEGATIVA
1) No tener capacidad o habilidad ( no saber)
She can’t swim ( ella no sabe nadar)
2) Imposibilidad .
That can’t be true ( eso no puede ser cierto)
She can’t be Peter’s sister, because he hasn’t got any sisters. ( ella no puede ser la hermana de Peter, porque él
no tiene hermanas)
3) No dar permiso
You can’t leave now ( no puedes irte ahora)
• INTERROGATIVA
1) Ofrecimientos
Can I help you? ( ¿Puedo ayudarle?)
2) Pedir permiso: Can más familiar; could más formal.
Can I come in? (¿Puedo entrar?)
Could I come in? (¿Podría entrar?)
3) Preguntar sobre habilidad
Can you swim? (¿Sabes nadar?)
Nota adicional: To be able to es el verbo que suple los tiempos de los que carece can
I haven’t been able to come ( No he podido venir)
I will be able to come ( Podré venir)
B. MUST Y HAVE TO = Deber, tener que
B.1 Conjugación
Must Have to
• Afirmativa : sujeto+ must+ verbo sin “to” • Afirmativa: sujeto + have/has to + verbo
I must study ( tengo que estudiar ) I have to study ( tengo que estudiar )
• Negativa: Sujeto + mustn’t + verbo sin “to” She has to study ( tiene que estudiar)
I mustn’t smoke ( no debo fumar) • Negativa: sujeto + don’t/doesn’t+have + verbo
• Interrogativa : Must+ sujeto + verbo sin “to” I Don’t have to go ( No tengo que ir )
Must I go? (¿Debo ir?) She doesn’t have to go (No tiene que ir)
• Interrogativa : Do/Does+ sujeto + have to + verbo
Do I have to go? (¿Tengo que ir?)
Does she have to go? ( ¿Tiene que ir?)
