THE ANTI-SEMITISM row engulfing the Labour

Party spilled into the House of Commons yesterday, amid warnings that the inquiry into the
issue must not be a mere sticking plaster
and concerns that the scandal could
impact on todays elections.
The issue has dominated national
headlines since last Wednesday,
when MP Naz Shah was sus-

pended over social media posts from 2014 endorsing the transportation of Israelis to America and
the subsequent suspension of Ken Livingstone [pictured, left] for suggesting Hitler supported Zionism.
They are among a total of 18 Labour members
who have faced similar action, including a five councillors over the past 48 hours.
With polling day fast approaching and claims the
leader wasnt doing enough to tackle the scourge, Jeremy Corbyn [pictured, right] told Jewish News last
Friday that he would recommend a new code of conduct to the partys national executive committee this
month. He also announced the establishment of an

IN FOCUS: LABOUR ANTI-SEMITISM SCANDAL

Dont blame Corbyn for this mess

SOMETHING IN the media

fury about Labours anti-Semites
doesnt add up.
Were told that Jeremy
Corbyn, being a stiff old radical
and noted friend of Hamas,
has helped to turn a once respectable party into a seething
hotbed of Jew hatred. But the
people being suspended from
the party for having said dodgy
things joined before Corbyn
became leader. And theyre
being thrown out by Corbyn.
The media narrative can be
turned on its head: Corbyn could
be seen, not as the importer of
anti-Semitic thinking into Labour,
but as the first Labour leader to
take serious action against it. Perhaps he isnt facilitating Labourite
anti-Semitism but rather is doing
something about it.
Whether its Ken Livingstone,
whos been in Labour since the
Stone Age, or Naz Shah, who became an MP under Ed Miliband,
these people ascended the party
pole when Corbyn was just a
scruffy Islington MP. Holding him
responsible for their party membership or past comments is
wrong.
Its hard to dodge the feeling
that some in the media, whether
Tory columnists or Labourites

hankering after the Blairite era,

are using the anti-Semitism crisis
to dent Corbyns leadership. This
is a dangerous thing to do.
First, because it will make people even more cynical about the
problem of anti-Semitism. Some
will equate accusations of antiSemitism with political point-scoring. And the last thing we need in
this discussion is more doubt that
anti-Semitism is a real problem.
Second, the narrow focus on
Corbyn underestimates the depth
of anti-Semitic thinking today. The
modern lefts strange, heated obsession with Zionism, and its view
of Zionisms supporters as warped
people unwelcome in polite society, has been growing for years.
It springs from the lefts abandonment of progressive thinking
and its embrace of the conspiracy
theory mindset, meaning it is
always on the hunt for one evil
force that might be held responsible for the worlds ills. Israel
now plays that role, meaning leftists sometimes slip into an antiZionism that echoes the paranoia
of the old anti-Semitism.
This is a long-brewing, profound problem. The Corbynbashers think theyre seriously
tackling anti-Semitism when, in
fact, theyre elevating their own
urge to topple the Labour leader
over the serious debate we need
about the moral decay of the
left and the return of an old
prejudice.

COMMUNITY WARY OVER

Continued from page 1
inquiry into anti-Semitism and other
forms of racism, chaired by the former
director of Liberty Shami Chakrabarti.
The leaders office said the inquiry would look into the boundaries of acceptable behaviour
and language; transparent
compliance procedures for
dealing with allegations of
racism; and training programmes for parliamentary
candidates, MPs and councillors. There is no place
for anti-Semitism or any
form of racism in the
Labour Party, or anywhere
in society, Corbyn said.
We will make sure that our
party is a welcoming home to
members of all communities.
The much needed
probe was cautiously
welcomed by the
Board of Deputies,
which said: The inquiry
must be rigorous and
fair in order to ensure it
has credibility. We hope
that the new inquiry will
mark the beginning of a
more certain and clear
Labour attitude against
anti-Semitism, from the
leader to the grassroots, including

clarity about people and groups with whom it is not

appropriate to share panels.
However, its terms of reference have yet to be
published and it is not known who will join
Chakrabarti and vice-chair Professor David Feldman, of the Pears Institute for the Study of Racism,
on the panel. There are also concerns about the
fact the existing investigation into intimidation at
the Oxford Labour Club will feed into the new
probe and questions over the role that Seumas
Milne, the leaders director of strategy who has described Israels foundation as a crime, will play.
Senior communal figures are known to be very
wary about the inquiry, while there has also been
no welcome from the Jewish Labour Movement
or Jewish politicians.
The Jewish Leadership Council initially welcomed it, before revising its statement the following day. It said: We hope it will be both
independent and comprehensive, said the statement. We trust it will draw upon expert evidence
from groups including the CST and will expeditiously reach robust conclusions and make constructive recommendations to deal with
anti-Semitism within the party, which will be published and acted upon by the leadership.
Writing in the Daily Telegraph, the Chief Rabbi
warned: If this inquiry turns out to be no more
than a sticking plaster, designed to placate and
diffuse until after the elections, the problem will
surely get worse and not better.
The central role of Professor Feldman has also
sparked concern over his failure to adopt the
EUMC definition of anti-Semitism in a recent submission to the All-Party Parliamentary Inquiry into
Anti-Semitism. His report said: Definitions of antiSemitism based on double standards, the EUMC

working definition, perceptions and outcomes have
not been adopted in this sub-report.
He is also a signatory to Independent Jewish
Voices, which this week questioned some claims of
anti-Semitism made in recent weeks. While the
group shared concerns over anti-Jewish prejudice, a statement said: Some of the allegations
against individuals are, in our view, baseless and
disingenuous; in other cases, ill-chosen language
has been employed; elsewhere, there have been
statements which, deliberately or otherwise, have
clearly crossed the line. The current climate, it
claimed, is coming to resemble a witch hunt.
Feldman who said there was an urgent need
for constructive proposals, said: All alllegations of
anti-Semitism require investigation. My starting
point is that the rules and norms applied to identify
racism for other minorities in British society should
be applied consistently, and that means to Jews.
My position is to work from an initial assumption
that people are speaking and writing in good faith
and are engaged in an honest disagreement. Allegations of disingenuousness, which come from
many sides in this debate, can rarely be proven.
One Labour MP, who wished to remain anonymous, said: It must be an inquiry that has the full
confidence of anti-Semitism campaigners and especially the Jewish community. Jeremy Corbyn
doesnt have enough credit in the bank to afford
to do anything else.
The anti-Semitism row spilled over into Prime
Ministers Questions yesterday. David Cameron told
the Labour leader his words about combatting antiSemitism would mean nothing if he failed to disown
comments made several years ago when he said
he had invited our friends from Hamas and
Hezbollah to speak at an event.

Above: Suspended MP Naz Shah. Left: Ken Livingstone

He pressed the point on five occasions asking

in a reversal of protocol Are they your friends or
are they not? Because these organisations in their
constitutions believe in persecuting and killing
Jews. They are anti-Semitic organisations, they are
racist organisations. He must stand up and say they
are not his friends. Corbyn responded: Obviously, anyone who commits racist acts or is anti-Semitic is not a friend of mine. I am clear about that.
Meanwhile, more than 4,000 people have signed
a petition in support of John Mann, chair of the AllParty Parliamentary Group against anti-Semitism,
for publicly challenging Ken Livingstone following
his Hitler remark. North West Friends of Israel and
Sussex Friends of Israel said Mann, who was called
to the whips office in the wake of his vocal intervention, should be commended. But while he
was praised by many, including some fellow MPs,
others backed a 20,000-strong petition against
what it described as his toxic behaviour.

New poll reveals confusion over where the line is

ANTI-SEMITISM has dominated the news agenda
over the past few days, but the nation is still split over
the line between criticism of Israel and Jew-hatred.
Over the past week, Labour has set up an inquiry
into anti-Semitism following the party suspension
of Naz Shah over previous social media comments
and former London mayor Ken Livingstone, who
said Hitler was once a Zionist.
Just as Labour members seem to be suffering
with what is and is not anti-Semitic, a YouGov poll
has identified differing views among the public.
The majority of 4,406 UK adults asked 60 percent felt criticising the Israeli government was
not anti-Semitism, but results differed when they
were asked if hating the Jewish state or questioning its right to exist was anti-Semitic.
Just over half (53 percent) felt hating Israel and
questioning its right to exist was anti-Semitism but
a fifth felt it was not and 26 percent did not know.
Those aged over 60 were more likely to see it
as anti-Semitic, but across all age groups around
a fifth felt it was not.
In all regions, around a fifth felt hating Israel

and questioning its right to exist was not antiSemitic while 59 percent in London felt it was, as
did 57 percent in the rest of the south. Just over
half, 54 percent, in the Midlands, Wales and the
north felt it was anti-Semitic. The number
dropped to 49 percent in Scotland.
Just over 55 percent of men and 50 percent of
women felt this was anti-Semitic, while 25 percent
and 18 percent respectively felt it was not.
Another 20 percent of men and 32 percent of
women did not know.
Conservative supporters were more likely to
view questioning Israels right to exist as anti-Semitic (63 percent), while just 54 percent of Labour
and 52 percent of Liberal Democrat supporters
thought so. Almost half, 48 percent, of Scottish National Party voters and 59 percent of UKIP supporters felt it was anti-Semitic.
Asked how much of a problem anti-Semitism
was in the Labour party, a third did not know while
another 30 percent thought it as a very small problem. Another 15 percent felt it was a fairly big problem while 15 percent felt it was no problem at all.

More Labour councillors suspended over anti-Semitism

YET MORE Labour councillors were suspended this
week over anti-Semitic comments after suggesting
Israel was behind terrorist group Islamic State and
that the country should be relocated to America.
Burnley councillor Shah Hussain was suspended
on Monday for tweets sent to Israeli footballer Yossi
Benayoun. In 2014, he told the former Chelsea midfielder: You are an complete and utter plonker, you
and your country doing the same thing that hitler
did to ur race in ww2 [sic].
Nottingham councillor Ilyas Aziz and ex-Blackburn mayor Salim Mulla were both suspended after
sharing a post suggesting that Israel should be relocated to the US. Aziz also compared Israel to
Nazi Germany, while Mulla suggested a Zionism

game was the motivation behind IS terrorists.

Miqdad Al-Nuaimi, a councillor in Newport, repeatedly compared Israel to the Nazis and described the
connection between Israel and ISIS as very interesting, while Terry Kelly, a councillor in Renfrewshire,
made offensive comments on his blog that included
references to the American Jewish lobby, which he
described as extremely powerful. He also criticised
Israels actions, saying it beggars belief that this is
being done by the survivors of the Holocaust.
All five suspensions came within hours of the
posts appearing on the Guido Fawkes political
blog. Over the past two months, 50 members have
been suspended from the party for alleged antiSemitism and racism.

Israels Labour Party leader We know anti-Semitism when we see it

invites Corbyn to Jerusalem
DEBORAH

LIPSTADT

Author and historian

ISAAC HERZOG this week invited Jeremy Corbyn to Israel as

he waded into the anti-Semitism
scandal engulfing his sister party.
The leader of Israels Labour
Party said he had been appalled
and outraged by comments made by a string
of UK Labour councillors
and an MP from a party
with a distinguished history of fighting racism in
every form.
But hours after reports
that Herzog suggested
he was considering suspending ties with the UK
Labour Party, the general
secretary of Israel Labour,
Hilik Bar, reassured
Labour Friends of Israels
Joan Ryan this was not the case
during a phone call on Tuesday.
In a letter to Corbyn, Herzog
wrote: Part of the story of
Israels establishment was the
context of centuries of antiJewish discrimination and dehumanisation and the subsequent
need for a state from which the
Jewish people could defend
themselves.
While there are many
within the British Labour Party
that support Israel and fight
every day against anti-Semitism,
and despite the fact the views

attention of many of us on
the other side of the pond.
UK watchers know this is
something that has been

this cannot diminish the importance of dealing with this serious problem.
He invited Corbyn to lead a

Israel but to their deaths a reference to a post promoted by
MP Naz Shah advocated the
transfer of Israelis to America.
Israels new UK ambassador
Mark Regev said he would like to
meet the Labour leader to discuss the issue.
He told the BBCs The Andrew

Marr Show:If youre saying the

Jewish people dont have that
right to sovereignty and independence, you have to ask why
you are holding Jews to a different standard. And there is a
word for that.
Of course they have the
right to criticise the government
of Israel. Israeli people do that
every day. Its not about criticising Israel. Its about demonising
the Jewish state.
The comments of the past
few weeks are demonising, a vilification of my country and its
very right to exist. Theres a difference between legitimate criticism and hate speech.

outrageous expressions of
anti-Semitism. (These supporters do not, of course, consider
them either outrageous or
anti-Semitic.) They try to turn
the tables and blame Jews,
Israel and their compatriots.
This is a tried and tested
tactic that has been prevalent
ever since it became unfashionable to be an anti-Semite.
(Its an appropriate thing to
remember on Yom HaShoah
that prior to the Holocaust,
there was nothing particularly outrageous about being
an anti-Semite.).
Over the past decade, if not
more, we have seen those

who have expressed overly

anti-Semitic views be they
politicians, writers, journalists
or university professors
accuse their accusers of
falsely labeling them as having engaged in anti-Semitism.
It happens far too often to
be happenstance. In short,
they depict themselves as the
innocent victims.
Years ago, an American
Supreme Court justice said of
pornography: I cant define
it, but I know it when I see it.
When it comes to anti-Semitism, we can define it and we
know it when we see it. And
this week we have seen it.

Inquiry must be model of best practice

JEREMY

NEWMARK
Chairman, Jewish
Labour Movement

WHILE COMMENTATORS debated whether it was right

to refer to the Labour antiSemitism saga as a crisis,
Ken Livingstones intervention
marked a serious escalation.
Until now, most of the incidents involved local activists,
councillors and other hitherto
anonymous figures. By distorting the history of the Holocaust to defend Naz Shahs
remarks (which she herself has

wisely chosen to apologise

for), Ken created a new locus
and a dimension to the problem. He brought it to the heart
of Labours ruling NEC on
which he sat. The very body
that is responsible for conducting the suspensions and investigations of those responsible.
So, what next? The announcement of the new package comprising a wider inquiry
and code of conduct has the
potential to enable the party
to embark on a long and complicated road to regaining the
confidence of the Jewish community. My party needs to get
this right.

The Baroness Royall inquiry

into events at Oxford Labour
Club and resulting issues is
progressing impressively.
I hope that once it begins its
work we will be able to say the
same about this new inquiry.
We are not there yet. Questions remain about its remit; to
whom it will report; how independent it will be. It would
have been better for this to
have been addressed in consultation with our community
before it was announced.
It needs to be a model of
best practice in the field.
I hope we reach that point
very quickly.

SPECIAL REPORT: MARKING YOM HASHOAH

THE COURAGEOUS BOYS

FROM BRAZIL

Jeremy Havardi travels to Rio de Janeiro to

meet three men who have never before
spoken publicly about how they survived the
Shoah and made a new life for themselves

ATIN AMERICA is perhaps better known

for giving sanctuary to Nazi war criminals
than to helping Jews scarred by the Holocaust. But thousands of survivors did find a safe
haven on this Continent, with many arriving in
the sunshine city of Rio de Janeiro.
One of them was Izak Kimelblat, 94, born in the
Polish shtetl of Lozyst in 1922. Together with
his parents and three siblings, Izak grew up in
an observant atmosphere, attending yeshiva as
a teenager. He recalls that there was little antiSemitism in his early years, making him believe
that the local population would not collaborate
with the Nazis against the Jews. When the war
started, the Russians occupied his town as part
of the Nazi-Soviet pact. Izak found that life continued as normal, except that the Soviet authorities closed down some Jewish institutions.
After the Germans invaded the Soviet zone,
Izaks village was surrounded by Ukrainians who
massacred nearly all its inhabitants, including his
parents and two siblings. Together with his brother
Natan, Izak hid in his aunts house before meeting
up with other survivors in a local forest. The small
group of Jewish villagers formed a partisan group
and obtained a variety of weapons, some from

With Niunea Rozentul, who was born in Romania.

He was forced into slave labour by the Axis powers
before making a new life in Brazil after the war

Jeremy Havardi with Izak Kimelblat, who was awarded medals from five countries for his heroics

discarded Russian tanks. In combat, they began to

develop a reputation for military prowess.
The men survived during the war, he recalled, by taking cows while walking, allowing them to consume enough milk
and beef. They marched to Belarus,
where they were put under the command
of Russian partisans led by General Kovpak. This group carried out a heroic mission to destroy the oil fields in the
Carpathian Mountains, although 70 percent of the fighters died in the operation.
What kept me going was revenge,
Izak said, a desire to avenge all those
who had been massacred. Later in the
war, he was wounded by a Dum-dum
bullet and spent six months recovering
in a hospital in Kiev.
Of the original 28 Polish partisans from
his village, only eight survived, with most
moving to Israel. But after the war, Izak
Robert Somlos family in 1941. From left: Tams, 11, Robert,
travelled to Rio, where he continued a
then five, his mother Klara Breuer Soml and his father dn
successful career in dental prosthetics
Soml. Behind are two aunts who were murdered in Auschwitz

and later set up an engineering business.

Niunea Rozentul, 86, was born in the Romanian
town of Brichon in 1929, the older of two boys.
Aged 12, he was transported to the Mohyliv-Podilskyi ghetto along the Dneister River, where he
would remain for much of the war. In the ghetto,
the inhabitants were forced to do hard labour.
Conditions could be harsh and diseases were
not uncommon in the insanitary environment. Niunea tragically lost his younger brother to an outbreak of typhus.
Niunea was among many people forced to construct a bridge for the benefit of the Axis powers.
But with the Russians closing in on Romania, the
bridge was blown up and the ghetto abandoned
by the Germans. Together with the rest of his family, Niunea fled the ghetto and moved to Bucharest.
From there, he eventually made his way to Brazil,
where there were established family connections.
His post-war life saw him peddle goods in the
streets of Rio, like many other immigrants, but he
later set up a successful business selling furniture.
He never had a formal education but as he pointed

out: I never needed it: life has taught me a lot.

Another man with an incredible story is Robert
Somlo, the younger of two boys born into a secular family in Budapest in 1936. Aged just seven
when the Nazis invaded Hungary, he retains
memories of wartime life marked by bombing
raids and occupation. There was a climate of
fear, he recalls, and a distinct lack of food.
He remembers Hungarian collaborators helping
to deport people east, to Auschwitz, as he
later found out. His own father was transported to
Mauthausen where he survived the war.
Initially, Robert thought he was safe when he
moved with his family to a building under Swedish
diplomatic protection.
But on 8 January 1945, Roberts family, together
with dozens of others in his building, were
marched to the Danube River by Hungarian collaborators. The river was already overflowing with
Jewish blood from the thousands of victims executed there. When his mother warned him to keep
his head low to avoid the gaze of the officials,
among them Adolf Eichmann, Robert responded:
I want to see (the killers) because I want to remember them.
Suddenly, a car pulled up with four passengers,
one of whom was Raoul Wallenberg. After negotiations took place, the fascists who had marched
Roberts family to death were forced to return them
home. It was an incredibly fortuitous escape.
After participating in the Hungarian uprising of
1956, Robert found political asylum in Brazil where
he later became a distinguished photographer.
These are three remarkable individuals with inspiring stories of courage, resilience and defiance.

Investing doesnt have to be boring.

Tributes and charity drive in

memory of beautiful Liora
COMMUNITY MEMBERS have
been laying tefillin and putting up
mezuzahs in just some of several
efforts to do mitzvahs after former
JFS pupil Liora Rosenberg passed
away, writes Marc Shoffman.
Ms Rosenberg, the 20-yearold who was hospitalised after a
bleed to the brain and pneumonia, died on Saturday and
mourners have filled a Facebook
page, Do a mitzvah in the merit
of Liora, with good deeds they
have been doing in her honour.
Videos and comments on the
Facebook page show a mezuzah
being installed and students attending local minyans.
She had been critically ill in
hospital for more than a week
and died last weekend five
days after being placed on life
support. Her funeral took place
in Bushey on Wednesday.
The family has also set up a
JustGiving page asking people to
do a mitzvah and raise money
for ambulance charity Hatzola.
The page says: Lioras dream

before she passed was to help

raise money to buy an ambulance for Hatzolah to replace the
one that recently crashed.
They are looking to raise
100,000 and have so far
reached almost 27,500.
The family has been supported by Hendon United Synagogue, which has held tehillim
gatherings and special prayers.
Hendon Rabbi Mordechai
Ginsbury, said: We are doing
whatever we possibly can to support Lioras family in any and
every way at this tragic time. So
many good and caring people
just want to help and show their
support and it has been remarkable to see how the community
has pulled together on social
media and in the real world.
This has been a great source
of strength, encouragement and
comfort to Lioras parents Lauren and Stuart and their family
as they have had to deal with
such a deeply painful set of circumstances.

servants amid claims that funds
are being used to pay salaries
for terrorists, writes Marc
Shoffman.
Ryan has called for the
Department for International
Development (DFID) payments
to be suspended pending an
investigation following claims
from Palestinian Media Watch
(PMW).
A PMW report released last
week found evidence that the
Palestinian Authority is continuing to pay terrorist salaries,
despite pledging it would stop
and move responsibility to the
Palestinian Liberation Organisation in order to continue receiving US and European aid.
The PA shut its Ministry of
Prisoner Affairs in 2014 and
instead a PLO Commission of
Prisoner Affairs was set up.
But the PMW research found
that, as many predicted, last
year the PA transferred extra
money to the PLO equivalent
for what the organisation claims
used to pay the prisoners.
The PA raised the amount it
transfers to the PLO by 481million shekels, from 294 million in
2014, to 775million in 2015,

Convicted Palestinians released in a prisoner exchange with Israel

according to the report, the

same amount the PLO Commission of Prisoners Affairs
needed to take on the responsibilities of the PA Ministry of
Prisoners Affairs, which is primarily paying terrorists salaries.
Responding to the report
in a letter to International
Development Secretary Justine
Greening, Ryan said: I am a
strong supporter of international aid, including the valuable work that DFID does.
However, the continuing
concerns about the alleged

misuse of aid by the PA risk

both undermining public
confidence in the value of
international aid, as well as
doing nothing to help promote
peace and coexistence between the peoples of Israel and
Palestine.
The MP repeated calls for
a cross party independent
inquiry on UK aid spending
in the region, and said all
DFID transfers related to civil
servant salaries should be suspended until the PMW claims
are investigated.

Vatican under pressure Zionist month aims to

over terror sports event boost understanding
THE VATICAN has come under pressure to monitor the use of its charitable resources after revelations that an East Jerusalem sports club funded
by the Papal agency for Middle East relief and development hosted a tournament named after a
renowned Fatah terrorist, writes Marc Shoffman.
Pope Pius XII set up the Pontifical Mission for
Palestine in 1949 to feed, clothe and educate
Palestinian refugees, but an article in the official PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida on Sunday
showed The Jerusalem Clubs Association, which
is funded by the Vatican, sponsored a football
tournament named after Fatahs Abu Jihad.
According to Palestinian Media Watch (PMW),
Khalil Al-Wazir, who was known as Abu Jihad, was
a founder of Fatah and deputy to Yasser Arafat.
Papal knight, Rabbi David Rosen, international
director of interreligious affairs at the American
Jewish Committee, said: The pontifical mission
for Palestine is a charitable organisation run by
local Palestinian Christians. I am confident the
Vatican and the New York Archdiocese responsible for the work of the mission are unaware of
the political abuse of their philanthropy and call
on them to exercise greater control.

THE FIRST national

Zionism month has
been launched to
increase understanding of and celebrate
the movement.
An email campaign asking MPs
whether
they
agree with the
principles of Zionism, a public debate and the publication of a
booklet of short essays will be part of the initiative, launched by We Believe in Israel and the
Zionist Federation. Lapel badges and twibbons
proclaiming: I am a Zionist will be available.
May has been chosen as it sees Israels independence day and the anniversary of the birth of
Theodor Herzl, the founder of political Zionism.
In recent years, the concept of Zionism has
been undermined by hostile propaganda into a
term of abuse and is used as an anti-Semitic slur,
a statement said. The two organisations want to...
educate the wider public that Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people.

Cambridge University to vote on quitting NUS

THE UNIVERSITY of Cambridges
Student Union has voted to hold a
referendum on 17 May over its
membership of the National Union
of Students following the controversial election of anti-Israel activist
Malia Bouattia as president.
CUSU members voted for the
holding of a referendum, backed
by the Jewish Society and
other students, on disaffiliation

from the NUS.

University newspaper Varsity
said a motion mandating CUSUs
sabbatical officers to send a letter to NUS condemning antiSemitism, and to mandate a
referendum on CUSU affiliation
with NUS was passed.
The motion was moved from
specifically mentioning Bouattia
to claiming that the NUS has

structural problems with antiSemitism.

In a statement after the vote,
Jack May, founder of NUS: Let
Cambridge Decide campaign,
said: The representatives of over
22,000 students at the university
of Cambridge have said in the
strongest terms they condemn
the language used by the new
president of the NUS.

Celebrating Ben one of The Boys

THE BOYS a group of 732 child survivors,
both girls and boys taken in by Britain at the
end of the Second World War held their 71st
reunion on Monday. JENNI FRAZER attended
and heard moving tributes to Ben Helfgott,
the indomitable founder of the 45 Aid Society
and former Olympic weightlifting champion

t was, perhaps, one of Ben Helfgotts grandchildren who summed up the founder of the
45 Aid Society so precisely. It was a huge
thing, she said, to be so strong on the inside
as well as on the outside.
The inner strength of Polish-born Beniek Helfgott in surviving the Holocaust and his outer
strength in becoming an Olympic weightlifting
champion, as well as his sterling work for Holocaust education were celebrated this week at
the 71st reunion of the Boys.
These were the 732 child survivors taken in by
Britain at the end of the war, boys and girls, who
founded, at Ben Helfgotts initiative, the 45 Aid
Society in 1963.
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, who came
before the event to pay his own private tribute
to Mr Helfgott, told Jewish News: This is an
amazing event, full of love, of hope and promise.
It is wonderful to have that atmosphere in these
most challenging times.
More than 400 people, survivors and
members of the Second, Third, and even
Fourth Generation, crowded into the ballroom
at Londons Wembley Hilton for a typically
raucous celebration.
As Maurice Helfgott, Bens son and a leading
member of the Second Generation, kicked
off the party with a perfect opener Mark Ron-

sons Uptown Funk, accompanied by a terrific

1930s and 40s video mash-up of Hollywood
stars the survivors took to the floor and pretty
much outdanced the younger participants.
Six candles were lit in memory of the six
million and a pledge was made by Angela
Cohen, chairman of the Second Generation,
to continue the work of the 45 Aid Society.
Such work, she said, in a pointed aside, should
be of interest to certain members of the
Labour Party.
It was a tacit point later made by the presence

of Communities Secretary Sir Eric Pickles, who

joined in the tributes made to Ben Helfgott.
It was done in the form of This Is Your Life,
with film and physical contributions from
fellow survivors, Bens family including his intrepid survivor sister, Mala Tribich and
a rather extraordinary song parody performed
by five professional women who work with Ben
Helfgott, ranging from Holocaust Educational
Trust chief executive Karen Pollock to the director of Holocaust Memorial Day, Olivia MarksWoldman. All the women said fervently

afterwards that they would have sung and performed for no one but Ben.
Judge Robert Rinder hosted the Big Red Book
event in place of Eamonn Andrews.
He said that the book contained scores of loving and affectionate tributes, ranging from individual survivors such as one of the Boys,
Hanka Ziegler, whose brother Wolf had worked
in the same glass factory as Ben during the Holocaust to national organisations such as the
Imperial War Museum and the new UK
Holocaust Memorial Foundation.
West End star James Freedman, known as the
Man of Steal, earlier gave a virtuoso performance in picking pockets.
But the evening belonged to Ben Helfgott, a
legendary terrible driver, the most persistent of
men, who by decades of warmth, charm, and
tolerance, has drawn a positive story for Britain
out of the horror of the Holocaust.

SECOND CHANCES
Stephen Oryszczuk visits a UJIA-funded kibbutz in the northern
Galil thats giving troubled youngsters a new outlook on life

n a kibbutz high in Israels northern Galil

region, troubled Israeli teenagers show
us how theyve trained abandoned dogs
so the dogs can find new homes. Its a touching
scene kids and dogs until they bring out a
retriever named Ally, at which point it suddenly
becomes hugely symbolic too.
Ally is scared stiff of us, a UJIA delegation
touring projects funded by the charity. Just a
pup, Ally was thrown into a sewer, where she
would have died had someone not finally
found her in October, six months ago.
Emaciated, she was sent up to Kibbutz Eshbal, which houses 40 at-risk youths from low
socio-economic backgrounds, many of whom
were ordered here by a judge as an alternative
to jail. Ally didnt eat for two weeks, and everyone feared the worst, until one day, out of the
blue, she began copying another dogs actions
while it was being instructed nearby. It was
a huge moment for the whole team.
Progress was slow. For months, she wouldnt
even come out of her cage, and the teens had
to feed her from behind; she was so terrified,
they couldnt risk eye contact. They worked with
her throughout the winter months, giving her
confidence, until finally, on this sunny afternoon,
here she is on a lead in front of us, cowering,
very unsure of herself, but able to.
Smack! The significance hit me: vulnerable
teenagers helping vulnerable animals, both
giving the other confidence and self-esteem,
both learning, preparing for new lives.
The youngsters here comprise Jews, Arabs
and Bedouin, which reflects the local population. British and American students come here
in their gap years to teach English, working in
local villages and urban areas where help is
most needed. Israeli students come here too,
and head for the Arab villages, working inside
schools, running Hebrew lessons.
Its not only linguistics, but basic dialogue
how do you speak with a Jewish person,
because most dont meet Jewish people on
a person-to-person level, says Gilad, who
founded the kibbutz on the site of an old army
base while he was in a youth movement.
Education in the Arab villages is very poor,"
he says, so we also have after-school activities, clubs, seminars, we take them on hikes,
we let Arab and Jewish groups meet each
other. Dialogue can create things.
He sees Kibbutz Eshbal as a co-existence
centre, to create a bridge that will allow Israel
to be both a Jewish and democratic state,
adding: There are moments in every Jews life
when he thinks about doing something for himself and for the nation.
Nearby, at Gordon School in the Western
Galil, Jewish and Arab children play football
together as part of the Equaliser Programme,
which UJIA also funds. This is a poor region, organisers explain, where football can be a common language. Often the kids have nothing to
do after school, so theyre making trouble,
says Iran, the project founder. And you know,
as kids, if you look for trouble, you usually find it.
With support from Israels Ministry of Education and the British Embassy (ambassador
David Quarrey joins us for a kickabout), Iran
began organising after-school football training,
with monthly tournaments for Jewish and Arab
children aged 10 to 12 (grades 4 to 6) who live
in disadvantaged communities.
There was no existing framework for kids
football, says Iran. And what there was,
parents couldnt afford.

Learning the common language cross-community youngsters joining in UJIAs Equaliser programme at the Gordon School in Western Galil

Volunteers, and the occasional ambassador, join in the soccer kickabouts

It followed a simple formula, he says, each
school choosing a team of youngsters who
would benefit most from the programme.
It soon expanded beyond the pitch, with
children taught organisational skills, and how
to set personal goals. Volunteers mostly
young Jewish students in their early 20s
began offering extra tuition in maths, Hebrew
and English. But football remains the core, says
Iran, in part because it is brilliant at breaking
down barriers.
When a Jewish kid sees that an Arab kid
wants to win, like him, or cries when he loses,
like him, they realise that the kid theyre shaking hands with at the end doesnt actually want

On the road to recovery Ally, who was abandoned as a pup

to kill them, he says. Same goes for the Arab

kid. They accept each other.
Equaliser and Eshbal are but two of the projects UJIA funds across the region. We saw the
same cross-communal commitment at Darca
Danciger School and Tel-Hai College in Kiryat
Shmona, Israels northern-most town, and at the
Academic College and Faculty of Medicine in
Zfat. As a non-Jew, I was struck by this untold
story: a Jewish charity pumping money into the
education not only of Israeli Jews, but of Christians, Arabs, Druze, Circassians and Bedouin.
Often, it is more than just an educational legup. Karmiel Youth Village, another UJIA-funded
project, provides homes and families for 200

vulnerable children whose homes had seen

chronic alcohol, drug and/or mental health
problems. These kids need to be removed
from harms way, explains a foster mother, as
her husband prepares a meal (its International
Women's Day, so I have a day off!)
Here, the foster children live in family units,
surrounded by an army of social workers, child
psychologists, therapists and university volunteers to help with their rehabilitation. When we
visit, walls and kitchens come second to the
happy children playing all around us.
Theyre too young to realise, but they now
have a future, and just like Ally can look
forward to a better life as a result.

Letters to the Editor

Exorcising the demon
ITS BEEN a wounding
week for the Labour Party
and a surreal one for British
Jews.
Former London mayor
Ken Livingstones odious
Hitler defence of Bradford
West MP Naz Shahs Facebook faux pas has plunged
the UK into a profound national debate on anti-Semitism.
What is it? When does
criticism of Israel become
it? And can you get away
with referencing the Nazi
dictator in defence of it?
All the while our community has looked on aghast,
wondering when and
where all this might end.
After days of damaging
revelations, Jeremy Corbyn
finally announced
measures to crack down on
anti-Semitism in his party,
including a new code of
conduct to make clear

for the first time within

the rules that Labour will
not tolerate such hate.
Corbyn has also announced the establishment
of an inquiry to be chaired
by the former director of
Liberty, Shami Chakrabarti.
There are considerable
reservations about the new
inquirys make-up and
processes. Who will sit on
it alongside Chakrabarti
and Professor David Feldman, director of the Pears
Institute for the Study of
Anti-Semitism? What are
its terms of reference?
Who will it ultimately report to?
There are many questions to answer and no
clear path ahead for a
party facing some profoundly alarming problems. Time will tell if these
new processes can help to
exorcise the demon.

CORBYN WONT HIDE

TRUE COLOURS LONG
Poor Comrade Corbyn. Despite his best
efforts, he eventually had to suspend Naz
Shah, MP for Bradford, (who won the seat
from the charming George Galloway) for
saying on social media what he and many
others in his Islington mafia think but are
too astute to admit.
It is no coincidence that since the
worst-dressed man in politics became
Labour leader, the incidence of anti-Semitic rhetoric from within his party has
risen dramatically, in stark contrast to the
level of action taken against those who
have been responsible.
This is all because Labour elected the
doomed Ed Miliband as leader instead of
his more credible brother.
Since the election disaster, we have the
shambles of a shadow cabinet that simply
cant run a bath, let alone the country.
However, the genie will be out of the
bottle during the next inevitable IsraeliPalestinian conflict. Then Corbyn and his
gang of usual suspects will show their
true colours.

THE BIG DIVIDE AT THE

HEART OF JUDAISM
Martin Stern is quite right that Liberal Judaism is a new and different religion to
Torah Judaism (Jewish News, 31 March).
The two have very little in common.
Liberal Judaism is a subset and part of
the world of secular liberal-leftism and political correctness. Torah Judaism is the
traditional religion and culture of the Jews
dating back to when Israel emerged as a
nation and distinct society when Ramses II
sat on the throne of Egypt.
The values and beliefs of the two are
radically different one to the other. Indeed,
the two are antithetical to each other.
In many respects the two are enemies.
The two groups have different interests and
goals, which are often in conflict with each
other.
The two do not even have British/western culture in common: one is of liberal
metropolitan culture, the other socially
conservative.
For Torah Judaism, the traditions and
vast literature of the past 3,200 years are
the living and vibrant foundation of Jewish
culture and existence today, as in every
past generation.
For Liberal Judaism, they are antiquated and irrelevant to modern life.
Liberal Judaism has so distanced itself
from Torah Judaism that intermarriage between people of the two sides of the religion is becoming very difficult as many
Liberal Jews are not Halachically Jewish.

Both charities masquerade as pro-Jewish, all the while under pressure to oppose
Israel.
Both organisations have Jewish-sounding names but in reality are not. What is
New Israel to these people? It would be
some pseudo-Palestine state to which
gullible and naive Jews have contributed,
an act tantamount to buying our own suicide.
While hardline Arabs are hell-bent on
one type of our destruction, so-called moderate Arabs craftily exploit anti-Semitism
and befriend people such as Mr Ognall
and we are being conned.
I urge all readers to give both these organisations a wide berth and throw their
appeals in the bin where they belong.

I am attempting to create an historical

FOR KOSHER, CHECK

WHAT YOURE BUYING
There is much competition when it
comes to kosher for Pesach foods, but
one must note that major supermarkets
with kosher sections all year round often
dont separate what is kosher chametz
from what is kosher for Pesach, in spite
of large signs wishing you a happy

We cant assume supermarket staff can
distinguish between minute Hebrew labels, eg kosher parev and kosher lPesach and it is therefore important for
buyers to check what they are buying.

ISLAMOPHOBIA NEEDS
TO BE TACKLED TOO
It was heartening to read your front page
report that Fiyaz Mughal has warned his
fellow Muslims that they cannot complain
of Islamophobia while simultaneously expressing anti-Semitic views (Jewish News,
14 April).
Is it not time for Jewish leaders also
to recognise that it cuts both ways and
to be much more active in seeking out
and publicly condemning Islamophobia
within our community?
This would properly recognise that the
promotion of prejudiced views about another minority is incompatible with the
fight against anti-Semitism.

DEEP SEA OF HATRED

Your letter writer Martin Saffer failed to
acknowledge the sea of hatred that surrounds Israel (Jewish News, 7 April).
In Gaza, for instance, children are systematically taught jihad, virulent Jew-hatred and that the entire land of Israel
belongs to the Muslim Arabs.
And what about Iran, which has declared its intent to wipe the Jewish state
from the face of the world?
What about the castigation from the
UN, which singles out Israel repeatedly,
above any other countrys far worse behaviour?
He also forgot the positive face of Israel. In areas of disaster around the world,
Israel is one of the first countries to send

They also produce medical and scientific innovations which benefit the world.
And dont forget the numbers of Nobel

OPINION: JENNI FRAZER & TIM FARRON, MP

How could MPs vote down

plan to save child refugees?
A CHINESE CURSE, apparently, is: May you
live in interesting times. By that measure, we
have all been damned, because the past week
or so has provided us with a tsunami of headline-grabbing events, from Hillsborough to Sir
Philip Green and the collapse of BHS, from
the junior doctors strike to the meltdown of
the National Union of Students.
Not forgetting, of course, the tragic implosion of the Labour Party, aided and abetted by
Ken Livingstone, a man who never saw a bandwagon without jumping on it. I very rarely get
to call myself a prophet but, in this case, I
warned as soon as I saw Jeremy Corbyns
name on the Labour leadership ballot in pursuit of diversity that trouble lay ahead, and
so it has proved.
But I want to talk about one issue that has perhaps been overtaken by all the attention-grabbing headlines about anti-Semitism and yet, of
course, has a visceral connection to our lives
here as Jews. It is the issue of child refugees from
Europe and the amendment to the Immigration
Bill, tabled in the Lords by Lord Dubs, who, as
everybody surely knows by now, was himself
saved by the Kindertransport.
It is worth remembering what happened to the
six-year-old Alfred Dubs, who was born in Prague
in 1932. His father, who was Jewish, had fled to
England on the day the Nazis arrived in Czechoslovakia, 15 March 1939. The little boy was rescued along with 669 other, mainly Jewish
children by the heroic Sir Nicholas Winton.
Alf Dubs was told he would meet his father at

Liverpool Street Station. He later said that he

clearly remembered leaving Prague station at age
six and not touching the food pack given to him
by his mother for the next two days. His mother
was initially denied a visa, but was able to join him
and his father in London shortly afterwards.
I cant imagine what it must have been like, a
six-year-old, travelling with a lot of other strange
children, emerging, ultimately, in an enormous
railway station in a foreign country, in the desperate hope that his father would be there.
Dubs was not just lucky, but he and the
other Kinder on the Winton train were saved
by a miracle of far-sightedness, of intelligent
adults doing the right thing.
And over the years Britain has, rightly, been
proud of its actions in taking in the kinder. So
many of them have made a contribution to
British society; some, like Alf Dubs, in the political sphere, others in all walks of life.
I dont know for sure, but I have never read
of anyone opposing the arrival of the wartime
children on the grounds of how they might become a danger to Britain. So why is the government so apparently implacably opposed to
bringing in a far fewer number 3,000 unaccompanied children, many of whom have
fetched up in the swamp that is the Calais jungle?
I asked my MP why he had voted with the government on the Dubs amendment which was defeated in the Commons last Monday. I received a
standard reply with the worrying paragraph that
we do not want to make matters worse or cause

inadvertent consequences where people traffickers encourage more children to put their lives at
risk by making the sea crossing to Europe.
I watched David Cameron making just this
argument at Prime Ministers Questions last
Wednesday. I have never seen anyone so unconvincing almost as though he, to use a
vogue phrase, was saying things he did not
agree with. Even the Daily Mail appears to
have recognised that the governments position is indefensible. It published a full-page
editorial last week headlined We must give
these lost children sanctuary.
The newspaper said: Nobody has been more
robust than this paper in giving voice to public
concerns over the impact of mass, unrestricted
immigration. But... we believe that the plight of
these unaccompanied children now in Europe
hundreds of them on our very doorstep in the
Channel ports of France has become so harrowing that we simply cannot turn our backs.
MPs will get the chance to vote on a new
amendment, again proposed by Lord Dubs,
on 9 May. A number of Conservative MPs are
signalling that they will back this move and thus
allow the children into Britain.
These are young children, living in appalling
conditions, sleeping on roadsides, in police cells
and in informal camps. This is the grim reality
of the real world, not the effluvium of the Westminster bubble. And this could have been the
fate of the Kinder, except for intelligent adults,
determined to do the right thing.
I hope the government is paying attention.

What must it be like to

be a terrifed six-year-old
arriving at a station in a
foreign country?

Prejudice is a problem for

all parties, mine included
IT IS always tempting for supporters of one
political party to revel in the misfortunes of
another. These past weeks Ive had no shortage of opportunities, from the divisions in
the Tories over Brexit to the open warfare
within the Labour Party over anti-Semitism.
It is, however, a temptation to be resisted.
In both cases, the issues at stake are far
more important than the opportunities to
score points. Neither do I consider the Liberal Democrats to be in a position to say: I
told you so.
But I do want to ensure that the Liberal Democrats are part of the solution, not part of
the problem.
I am a passionate believer in a two-state
solution. There is simply no possibility of a
just and sustainable peace within the region
without satisfying the aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians for nationhood,
and there is no credible model for that
which does not require two states within
safe and secure borders.
So Israeli and Palestinian politicians who
refuse to work towards this goal are rightly
deserving of our criticism.
And yet the instinctive desire of political
progressives to stand up for the underdog
seems increasingly to blind many to this simple fact.
Whats more, rather than work for a solution, we are seeing the development of a
cult of victimhood: a childish and destructive

desire to establish that the only injustice, the

only suffering, has been by whichever side
one has chosen to support.
As the stalemate in the conflict has become ever more deeply embedded, so this
process has, for some people, moved from
supporting the suffering of Palestinians to a
systematic denial of the suffering and rights
of Israelis and Jews.
At the extreme end, this leads straight
to Holocaust denial, but for many on the
left, the equating of Zionism with Nazism
serves the same job: the victims become
or indeed in the case of Ken Livingstones appalling comments always were, the oppressors. This is not legitimate criticism of Israeli
government policies this is straightforward
anti-Semitism, guilt by association, based on
a perversion of history that we must resist at
all costs.
Much as I might like it to be otherwise, this
analysis of victimhood is not a problem confined to the Labour Party. It is a challenge for
all political parties, including my own.
But if I dare offer a little advice to my fellow party leader, change needs to be
led from the top. This is not a case of a few
bad apples: it should be abundantly clear by
now that Livingstone is not the cause of the
problem, but a symptom and it will require
institutional reform to turn the situation
around.
Meantime, however, the solution must

not be for Jews to join or support the Conservatives.

As an outsider, it seems to me that the
Jewish community is by instinct progressive.
Insofar as one can generalise, there is no
doubting the commitment to education or
enterprise, health care or internationalism.
These are progressive values dare I say it,
liberal values. The challenges we face as a
country today need progressive solutions
and Jews need to be able to contribute to
finding them.
I hope for the sake of the country as well
as the Jewish community that the Labour
Party will find a way to become once again
an effective opposition to the Conservatives
goodness knows this country needs one.
In the meantime, however, I give this
pledge: under my leadership, the Liberal Democrats will seek to be part of the solution
not part of the problem.
That means zero- tolerance of anti-Semitism in the UK and passionate advocacy of a
just and sustainable peace for Israelis and
Palestinians in the Middle East.
And it means conducting our dialogue
about how this might be achieved in a language and a manner that builds bridges and
trust between communities, not setting one
against the other or assigning blame.
I hope it is not too late for progressives
from whichever party to redirect their efforts
to these ends.

RABBI DANA
MIRIAMINTERNATIONAL,
BERGER AND MARKRICHARD
MAIER
OPINION:
FERRER, JUDE WILLIAMS &

Israel, like Eurovision, gave

me freedom to be who I am
THE NOISE. The size. The crowds,
the lights and, most of all, the pride.
If there is one night in my life that
I will never forget, its 9 May 1998.
On that date, standing in front
of hundreds of people, I won the
Eurovision Song Contest. In the
space of a few hours, millions
around the world saw a different
side to my country Israel than the
one they were used to seeing.
As an Israeli, it was incredible to
win for my country, a country that
only that year was celebrating its
50th birthday. As a transgender
woman, it was amazing to be the
first openly trans entrant in the competitions history. And as a human
being, it was beyond belief to
achieve recognition, acceptance
and success on such a global stage.
So when the Zionist Federation UK
invited me to headline its Eurovisionthemed Yom Haatzmaut party this
year, of course I was going to say yes.
Another chance to strut my stuff in
London, while also taking part in the
biggest celebration of Israels birthday in the UK? How could I say no?
But this night is about more than
just re-hearing some of our favourite
pop songs. The story of me and Eurovision is more than that. Its a story
about Israel, and what it represents.
It would be easy to joke about

Dana International won the Eurovision Song Contest in May 1998 with Diva

a comparison between the two.

A noisy competition between many
different candidates offering their
unique visions? Watching votes get
allocated in mysterious ways that
often surprise you? A long night
waiting to see which of the front-runners is eventually crowned the winner? Lets be honest its basically
a more fabulous (and only slightly
more frequent) version of our own
Knesset elections!
More seriously, Eurovision and
Israel have a remarkable connection.
The message of Eurovision is one of
peace, tolerance and hope, of peo-

ple being brought together despite

their differences. This is a message
that resonates in Israel, a tiny sliver of
those values in a part of the world
where they are in short supply.
Eurovision celebrates the freedom
to be who you are, and to express
that freedom as you wish. Freedom
is like a thread from the same
material you can fashion different
designs, and it takes a lot of different
threads to make any one item.
I couldnt have the freedom to live
my life without you having your freedom and vice versa. And its all
those different threads, all those

different strands of freedom that

make up Israel.
Part of that is the freedom to be
proudly Jewish. I have RomanianYemeni roots, no longer growing on
opposite sides of the world, but
now interwoven in the same soil
that first nurtured the Jewish people
more than 2,000 years ago.
Only in the past few months have
the last few Yemeni Jews been rescued from a county which, tragically,
they can no longer call home.
But the response has to be love,
not hate. I have many Arab fans
across the Middle East, and my
dream would be to tour the region so
I could meet them, for them to share
the freedom I have. Who knows what
we could achieve? For decades, the
politicians have tried to negotiate
peace, so far without success. But
I know music can reach the places
they cant. Art can build bridges, culture can smash stereotypes.
Lets celebrate our music, our
freedom, our Israel! The Zionist Federations Yom Haatzmaut party is
going to be the biggest party for Israel in the UK, and I want as many
of you as possible to join
in. Eurovision was a night Ill never
forget. Lets make this years Yom
Haatzmaut just as unforgettable.

Labour, Israel, anti-Semitism

and Corbyns Catch 20-Jew
Q: WHAT IS it about Jeremy Corbyns Labour
Party that anti-Semites find so attractive?
A: Jeremy Corbyn.
The Labour leader seems to hate Israel and all
it stands for. The psychopaths of Hamas remain
his friends and Israel the enemy. He has an unshakable one-eyed view of the Jewish state refusing even to utter the word Israel after being
forced to speak at a Friends of Israel fringe meeting at last years party conference.
Alongside George Galloway and Ken Livingstone, Corbyn is a poster boy for the British antiZionism movement. When the Labour Party, in an
act of self-slaughter, crowned him leader, the
Jew-haters began hovering around Her Majestys
Opposition like flies to honey.
It didnt take the loonies long to cause
a stir. There have been a litany of debacles in
the past two weeks, from party member
Gerry Downing addressing the Jewish question
to former Parliamentary candidate Vicky Kirby
noting Jews have big noses culminating in
last weeks suspension of Bradford West MP Naz
Shah, who called for the transportation and
relocation of Israelis as a solution to the
Middle East problem and compared Israel to Nazi
Germany.
Corbyns default position on all these outrages
is to do precisely nothing, until nothing is no
longer an option. He simply utters the same
warped, weasel words. Literally: Nothing to see
here move along, move along.

He flatly refuses to tackle even isolate antiSemitism, for one far-reaching reason. Jeremy
Corbyn, a man who questions Israel place in the
world, emboldens Jew haters.
Denounce them, call this filth out for what they
really are, and he also denounces much of his
core support. Its Corbyns Catch 20-Jew.
So rather than label a Jew-hater a Jew-hater,
he speaks in the broadest possible terms about
all racism being unacceptable. Theres always
a caveat, always a balance. Rather than do the
right thing, he obfuscates and draws false comparison. Its a very dark art, and every time he
indulges in it, his Jew-hating advocates draw
closer and grow bolder.
How ironic that it was Ken Livingstone, Corbyns kindred spirit who the Labour leader
brought back from political wilderness and into
a senior role in the party who caused this simmering mess to reach boiling point.
With the timing of a Diego Costa tackle, notso-cuddly Ken, a man who couldnt spot an antiSemite at a Nuremberg rally, decided in his finite
wisdom to send the party into meltdown by
claiming the man who slaughtered six million
Jews was in fact a Zionist, in defence of Labour
MP Naz Shahs anti-Semitic Facebook posts.
Crass Ken, as he so often does, mentioned the
war. Like Basil Fawlty, he didnt get away with it.
Ken has a talent for provoking Jewish ire, from
his support for homophobic Jew-hate preacher
Yusuf al-Qaradawi to comparing Jewish journalist

Oliver Finegold to a concentration camp guard.

That infamous incident, which saw him suspended
as London mayor after he stubbornly refused to
apologise, showed a particularly ugly self-righteous streak running through his personality.
Had he the sense to keep shtum in the wake
of the Shah scandal [a woman who, irony of
ironies, sat on the Home Affairs inquiry into antiSemitism until stepping down on Tuesday], this
whole sorry episode may have petered out.
After all, Shah has had a broadly positive impact on relations between UK Jews and Muslims
in the year since becoming an MP. The other
week she attended a Passover seder and,
tellingly, her constituencys synagogue quickly
jumped to her defence.
She even wrote an apology for the Jewish
News, which showed seemingly genuine remorse.
Her suspension was a setback towards bolstering Jewish-Muslim relations, but the damage she wrought is reversible. She should be
brought back into the party.
For Ken, on the other hand, its game over.
He has proved his credentials time and again
as a political survivor, but this latest madcap
manoeuvre surely signals the end of a chequered,
often ignominious career. Expulsion is inevitable.
After which, his old pal will inevitably continue
to tinker around the edges of Labour anti-Semitism, paying lip service to his partys sickness,
until Rome finally crashes at his feet.
The end cant come soon enough.

JUSTIN COHEN

THE EVENTS of last week have been truly disturbing and upsetting and remain hot topics in
our households and on Twitter accounts. The
anti-Semitic remarks we have heard and read
about, and the debate about the nature of antiSemitism create a deep sense of concern, especially in the vile way in which attempts are being
made to manipulate the truth of the Holocaust.
How do we take action when we are exposed
to this kind of abuse and lies? The most appropriate way, coinciding with this weeks annual Yom
HaShoah commemoration, has to be to stand up
publicly to remember the true tragedy of the
Holocaust, honour the memory of the victims and
pay tribute to survivors and refugees.
Last year, being the 70th anniversary of the ending of the Second World War and the liberation of
the concentration camps, our annual commemoration ceremony, was moved from the existing
National Memorial to the Victims of the Holocaust,
at the Dell in Hyde Park, London, to the Barnet
Copthall Stadium. This was to allow far greater
numbers of our community to be able to attend,
seated and under cover. The community
responded magnificently to this special commemoration, with more than 5,000 attending. This
compared to numbers of a maximum of 1,000 in
previous years, who made the effort to go to the
very inaccessible and exposed venue of the Dell.
With the tragic events in Paris, Brussels and
elsewhere in Europe since last years commemo-

HaShoah event the biggest

Last years Yom HaShoah commemoration

ration and these recent events here, there is no

better way to combat both terror and manipulative lies, than by us all gathering together, in even
larger numbers, to commemorate and remember.
Holocaust commemoration and remembrance,
combined with Holocaust education, are the only
ways of ensuring that the truth about the Shoah,
the unbelievable suffering of the victims and the
bravery of the survivors and refugees are never
forgotten and can never be manipulated.
This years ceremony is being held this Sunday,
8 May, at the Barnet Copthall Stadium. Admission
and parking are free. Doors open at 12.30pm, with

the ceremony starting at 2pm prompt. It will bring

together survivors, refugees and ex-service personnel who will be joined by Jewish communal
and religious leaders across the whole spectrum
of our community, together with representatives
of more than 100 Jewish communal organisations
which support this annual event. They will be
joined by and we will especially welcome representatives of national and local organisations.
The family-friendly ceremony will last around
90 minutes, during which we will hear and, as
always, be inspired by the experiences of survivors and refugees, musical interludes, singing
of choirs and, once again, be joined by children
from many Jewish schools, who will also sing
songs written for these occasions.
For security purposes, it is important that tickets, although free, are booked in advance and
online booking will remain open until 10am on
Sunday morning. Attending without booking will
involve lengthy queuing and delays to check in.
Please join the many thousands who have
already been allocated tickets, to ensure that this
is the largest ever gathering at a commemoration
event. It will continue to define the most appropriate contemporary message for ourselves and
future generations, which we must not and will
not allow to be distorted by others.

The most appropriate action

against the manipulation of the
Shoah is to stand up publicly
to remember the tragedy

If Shah is sorry, she must be

given a chance to prove it
ON THE scale of political mea culpas, Naz Shah's
can be filed in the category marked fulsome. It
may have taken three attempts, but her apology
to the Jewish community, as revealed by Jewish
News, was a marked improvement on the first
24 hours. Im not aware of any such frank words of
remorse from others suspended in recent weeks.
It had to be; its a long way back from revelations that a serving MP in a country that proudly
points to its diverse make-up could think it appropriate to endorse the transportation of Israelis
or even conceive of posting an article likening
Zionism to al-Qaeda.
However, if she means everything she says,
then this could be an opportunity both for her and
the fight against anti-Semitism. All the more so if
she is willing to publicly acknowledge the particular problem on the British left, as some reports
suggest. If she does increase her engagement
with Anglo-Jewry; if that leads to an increased understanding of what constitutes anti-Semitism and
how all too often those who see themselves as
pro-Palestinian activists trample over the line into
Jew-hate. And, moreover, if she is then willing to
be a player in fighting it in areas others cant
reach; on the left, in Muslim communities and beyond, this chance must not be wasted.
Even before this, she had started to associate
more with the Jewish community, including her
local shul and with Reform Senior Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, whose interfaith event marking
Passover she attended just last week. Such measured voices along with those of the likes of the
Jewish Labour Movement could have an impact.
To remove the whip, as has now happened,

could backfire. It could send Shah into the arms

of some of those she has associated with, and
worse. It could cause someone to be lost to reason and balance for good. If this were a factor in
the hesitancy of some to call for the whip to be
removed (even the Board of Deputies did not call
for this) it would not be unreasonable.
But this danger became secondary to the
impact of the partys inaction on the already fractious relationship with the Jewish community and
the confidence that the leaderships message of
zero tolerance will be applied regardless of a perpetrators position in the party. A relationship already hanging by a thread simply could not
afford this. The Jewish community does not ask
for special treatment; it just asks to be treated the
same as any community.
Its not often that the many on the left and right
are on the same page. But as this story moved
into its second day, leading voices such as writer
Owen Jones were united with Tory MPs.
Last weeks suspension was necessary for the
good of the relationship with Labour and to send
out a clear message. It was the only possible
course of action.
As the wider issue of her position in Labour
dominated, Shah withdrew from her role on the
Home Office inquiry into anti-Semitism.
Her party suspension, however, need not be
permanent; I realise I risk an online lynching for
saying this, but the door should be left ajar and
the opportunity given for the Bradford West MP
to prove she is as serious about her journey as
those who know her seem to believe.
Call me naive, but its not by talking just to

those whose views we share that well make a significant difference.

But this must be seen as just the start of a
process. If she is serious, she will appreciate that
retaining the whip and the status quo was not in
the interests of herself, her party or its ties with the
Jewish community. If, despite the disciplinary
process, she acts on her words to enhance her
efforts with the community, we should all take notice. She has an opportunity to make a real and
much-needed contribution. Over to you, Ms Shah.
But there is a far bigger issue here about antiSemitism on the left, and Corbyn couldnt be better placed to address it. Let me be clear: I always
strongly counter the occasional suggestion I hear
that he himself could be anti-Semitic and he has
indeed acted swiftly to suspend several members,
some before the media got to the story.
But he can do a lot more, including backing proposals for a change in Labours rules to make it easier to throw out racists. And many might suggest
the leader could do worse than follow Shah by acknowledging past mistakes in his case, around
the language used about terror groups and
extremists who have espoused anti-Semitic views
as well as Shahs reported explicit recognition of
the source of the hate. That really could make a
dent in the prevailing narrative, start to make a difference to the relationship with Labour and, just
maybe, to the fight against the new anti-Semitism.
There could be few greater prizes for a man
who is proud of his and his family's credentials in
opposing racism.
In his own way, therefore, he too has a golden
opportunity.

Amidala, aka, Natalie Portman, a Jewish hero See page 24

Dani Tucker tells Alex Galbinski about

her gregarious mother, Shally, whose
recipes she has published for charity

y day or by night, Shally Tuckers kitchen was

a hive of creativity and she always ensured
her guests would never leave hungry.
For the Mill Hill mother-of-three, a chef who
worked with Prue Leith, it was important to have an
open house and when people came to visit, they
didnt want to leave. But Shally really didnt mind,
as she loved bringing people together and, very
often, they joined in with the cooking.
When Shally originally from Johannesburg and
whose real name was Sharon died two-and-a-half
years ago, her daughter Dani was inspired to collate
her mothers recipes in a cookbook, The Social
Kitchen, and raise money for charity in her honour.
She was the most unbelievable woman; so powerful, so intelligent and so in tune with everything,
explains Dani, 32. Everyone loved her and being
around her. She oozed an aura no one wanted to
leave her and go home. She had a big personality
and took the time for everyone.
One of four siblings, Shally studied catering in
South Africa, where she met her future husband,
Lawrence. When he won a scholarship to Londons
Savoy Hotel, the couple not yet married both
came over, and Shally worked for Leith as a chef at
the Kuwait Investment Office.
After they married, they bought the Bentinck
House Hotel in West London, where they took on
all the roles needed to look after their guests. One
year later, they bought another hotel.
After her children were born Dani is the eldest,
followed by Ryan and Megan Shallys health
began to decline. She was diagnosed with numerous auto-immune diseases, the most damaging of
which were pustular psoriasis, Calciphylaxis and

Dani Tucker with her late mother, Shally

psoriatic arthritis, which caused open skin sores and

painful swollen joints.
The book raises money for Dermatrust, a charity
that funds research into the conditions and helps
develop new treatments.
Despite her health concerns, Shally lived life to
the full. By the time she died, aged 53, Dani says
Shally had accomplished so much that some people dont their entire lives, adding: She was so
determined and she was a fighter.
It was almost inevitable that Dani would publish
this recipe book. After Shallys death, Dani who
had not been in her home for two weeks found
her mothers leather-bound hand-written cookbooks
on her kitchen table.
They contained her mothers favourite recipes,
including some dating as far back as Danis greatgrandmothers on both sides but, to this day, she
does not know who put them there.
I remember going into the dining room; there
were all these books and folders and piles of
recipes and I have no idea how they got there,
remembers Dani. She must have just known
and she wanted me to have them. I was blown
away and it became apparent that I had to
do a book.
Taking a friends advice, Dani contacted
Leith, who straight away introduced her
to chefs, food photographers and stylists, many of whom jumped at the
chance to help her.
A chef was needed to help scale
down the recipes ready for use by
home cooks for the Tuckers
are used to cooking on a
massive scale.
We make food for 60
to 70 people we had that
many for tea for my
brothers wedding the
other week. Most people
would get things like that
catered, but we just get it done,
Dani laughs. There was an amazing
team of people who worked on the book and it
all started from that one phone call with Prue.

The Social Kitchen, inset below, features a collection of recipes by Shally Tucker while raising money for
Dermatrust. The book includes traditional and modern recipes, including this one for sushi salad, above

The result is a stunning cookbook with recipes

that reflect the familys South African and Jewish
roots, Lithuanian heritage and English upbringing
or, as Dani writes, the eclectic mixture of our home
and our food.
Aside from the recipes which include traditional
ones such as chicken soup and challah, as well as
others like spelt salad and nutty parmesan sole
another personal touch is the ribbon bookmark
included in every copy of the book.
My mum used to sew a lot and do beading and
she used to buy lots of ribbons, Dani explains.
Indeed, Shally had opened her own arts and crafts
shop, Outstamping, in Edgware. People still
come up to us and tell us how much they loved
that shop and how much our mother inspired
them, says Megan.
The book also contains tales of family life and
reveals more about Shallys remarkable personality,
including how she used to muck in as necessary.
One anecdote reveals the time when the family
were among 60 guests in an Israeli hotel for a
barmitzvah, and the staff were struggling to cope
with making lunch for all.
So what did mom do? She knew exactly how to
solve this problem so she went into the kitchen,
rolled up her sleeves and got stuck in, writes Dani.
Another tells of Shallys 50th birthday at home. It
was meant to be a tea party, but people stayed and
stayed. Husbands arrived to collect their wives and

joined in. Word got around and other friends arrived

so in the end we had about 300 people there. Wed
hired a singer to perform for 90 minutes, but he was
having such a good time he stayed for eight hours.
Dani, who now lives in St Johns Wood and
studied fashion design, specialising in couture
embroidery, has inherited her mothers creativity
and turns her hand to many things. Until recently,
she was making cakes and consults for restaurants. She has also recently set up Mews London
jewellery company.
Dani is hard-pushed to name her favourite recipes
from the book although she admits that she and
her sister would fight over the chocolate mousse
adding: We always had so many people round that
we had four dishes on the go at the same time!
With an initial run of 2,000, the cookbook has so
far raised around 35,000, all of which goes straight
to charity.
I really want to spread my mothers love for life
and if this can just make people smile, then thats
good enough for me, Dani tells me.
As she adds in her introduction: Our home was
an oasis of light and laughter a proverbial shelter
from the storm. This book is a testament to [my
mother], her lifes work and the adoration of her
family and friends.

Dressing:
130ml sunflower oil
40ml Safari brown vinegar (or other
brown vinegar)
2 tbsp sugar

Spelt doesnt take long to cook but if youre really

short of time you can use a pack of ready-cooked spelt.
This salad looks very pretty in a glass serving bowl.

METHOD
Cook the spelt according to the packet
instructions 250g of raw spelt should make
about 500g cooked.
Leave the spelt to cool.
When the spelt has cooled, put it in a bowl with
the cucumber, peppers, pineapple and red onion.
Make the dressing, then add it to the salad and
toss well.
Season with salt and pepper. Serve the salad in a
big bowl or on a platter so everyone can help
themselves.

INGREDIENTS
50g unsalted butter
small bunch of parsley
150g breadcrumbs (made from stale
bread)
1 lemon
6 generous pieces of white fish fillet,
such as cod or haddock
olive oil
salt and black pepper

it all ready in advance, then pop it in the oven when
youre nearly ready to eat. No stress.

METHOD
Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas 6.
Melt the butter in a small saucepan, season it with salt
and pepper and take the pan off the heat. Finely chop
the parsley and mix it with the breadcrumbs in a bowl,
then grate in the zest of the lemon. Season well.
Dip each piece of fish in the melted butter, place it in
a baking tray, then top it with lemony breadcrumbs.
Finely slice the lemon and place the slices around the
pieces of fish.

INGREDIENTS
2 x 180g slabs of Bourneville chocolate
50g butter
6 eggs separated
6 tbsp caster sugar
600ml double cream

S E R VE S 8 - 1 0

If you have any Crunchies or other chocolate bars in your

cupboard, crumble them on top of the mousse to add
extra texture and flavour. Amazing!

METHOD
Break the chocolate up into pieces and put them in a large
heatproof bowl with the butter. Place the bowl over a pan
of simmering water making sure the bottom of the bowl
doesnt touch the water until the chocolate and butter
have melted, stirring occasionally. Carefully remove the
bowl from the pan.
Using a free-standing mixer or a hand whisk, beat the egg
yolks with five tablespoons of the sugar for five minutes
until the mixture is creamy and pale. (When the whisk is
removed, itshould leave a trail of batter on the surface.)
Stir the melted chocolate into the egg mixture, making
sure everything is well incorporated.
In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites to soft peaks, then
add the remaining sugar and continue to whisk until stiff.
In another bowl, whisk the cream until its just holding its
shape be careful not to overwhip it at this stage. Carefully
fold the chocolate mix into the cream. Then, using a metal
spoon, fold in the egg whites a little at a time, being careful
not to knock the air out of the mixture. When everything is
combined, pour the mixture into a trifle dish and chill it in
the fridge for at least five hours or overnight before serving.

2 ORTHODOX JUDAISM
What does the
Torah say about...
for

Torah
Today
BY RABBI ARIEL

ABEL

LAST MONTH, more than

11.5 million financial and legal
records were leaked, exposing a system that has enabled
crime, corruption and wrongdoing.
The monies invested in
the schemes were hidden
by secretive offshore companies. What does the Torah
say about the Panama
Papers scandal and political
hypocrisy?
Our own prime minister felt
the need to deny all associations several times and, only
when there was no choice,
admit that as an MP he had
monies invested in some companies concerned.
It is not so much the right
and wrong of a situation that
matters as much as the willingness and moral gumption
to take responsibility.
Ducking and weaving
to avoid the discomfort of
responsibility runs contrary to
Torah.
For example, the Hebrew
prophet Nathan charged
David with adultery.

THE PANAMA
PAPERS

Davids immediate response

was: I have sinned. For this
alone, he was spared.
Davids crime was not
minor, but his willingness to
step up to the plate and take
responsibility for his actions is
the grace that allowed him to
salvage his reputation through
repentance; confession is
a necessary precondition for
repentance.
Seeking excuses breeds
a bad societal culture. Admitting a situation when morality
requires it, not seeking to
cover up, whether or not
there was a wrongdoing
involved restores morale to
the people and trust in its
leadership.
It is as result of Davids
unhesitating transparency that
his lineage survived and was
promoted for eternity by
prophetic promise.
The Torah requires us to
seek total separation from
lies and deceit. Proximity to
dishonesty rubs off, whether
or not there is an intention to
engage in it.
For example, bribery is an
inchoate offence. If a judge
becomes aware of a favour
he may benefit from, even if
he actively took nothing, his

Sedra:
Acharei Mot
BY RABBI JONNY

ROODYN

THIS WEEKS sedra is also the reading for

Yom Kippur as it describes the service that
took place in the Temple on the holiest day of
the year.
The laws of this service are found in great
detail in the Talmud and are recounted during
the chazans repetition of mussaf on Yom
Kippur.
The first verse of the sedra provides
the context for these Divine commandments:
And God spoke to Moses after the
death of Aarons two sons, when they drew
near before God, and they died (Vayikra
16:1).
At this point, Moses is told to inform his
brother that while he may not enter the Holy
of Holies at any time he chooses, there will
be occasions, namely Yom Kippur, when he
will be required to do so.
The death of Aarons two eldest sons,
Nadav and Avihu, is recorded in parshat
Shemini as follows: And Aarons sons,
Nadav and Avihu, each took his pan, put
fire in them, and placed incense upon it, and

sense of judgement is affected.

Since the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky episode, leaders
have not been expected to
resign for moral indiscretions.
In the UK, government
ministers since the eighties
similarly stopped taking
responsibility for the misdemeanours of officials and
employees who failed in their
duties to state.
However, it appears that
a leader in Judaism has a very
high degree of responsibility,
especially in a financial sense.
When Joshua lost a battle
at the start of his Canaanite
conquest, he insisted on finding out who had committed
a wrong, which may have
removed Divine protection
from his troops.
When they found out who it
was, they insisted that he
admit it of his own accord,
which he duly did. Achan of
the tribe of Judah died for his
betrayal.
However short a leader may
fall of standards, a confession
in time may save many a
reputation.

Princes Road Synagogue

they brought a strange fire before God,

which He had not commanded them.
(Vaykira 10:1).
Put simply, Nadav and Avihu, heirs to the
high priesthood, go it alone and play with fire
in the Holy of Holies and get badly burnt,
resulting in a personal tragedy for Aaron and
a national loss for the Children of Israel.
It would therefore stand to reason that
Aaron would never again wish to set foot in
the Holy of Holies.
Our sedra therefore starts with Moses
telling his brother that this is not the Jewish
way.
In rising to the challenge of ministering
in the very place where his sons met their
untimely death, Aaron is demonstrating a
tremendous amount of courage.
He refuses to be a victim of his circumstances and continues to serve the people
despite his personal pain.
There is one important distinction between
Aaron and his sons.
By listening to his brothers instructions, he
makes sure to fulfil the Divine requirements to
the letter.
His sons felt that they could serve God on
their own terms.
Aaron realises that in order to ensure a
future for the Jewish people, he has to listen
to the word of God.
It is this resilience and commitment that laid
the foundations of a Jewish people who have
survived adversity at every turn by refusing to
give up and remaining faithful to its eternal
values.

ITS BIBLICAL!

Everything you ever wanted

to know about your favourite
Torah characters... and the
how far the people had strayed from Hashem
ones youve never heard of ing
and the punishments that would ensue.
BY RABBI JAMES

PROOPS

THIS WEEK: King Josiah

THROUGHOUT TANACH we meet countless
characters who exemplify leadership, bravery and
dedication to their principles.
One such character who has always stood out for
me as a man who first and foremost led by example
and demonstrated absolute faith in his people was
King Josiah, 640 609 BCE.
Following the assassination of his father Amon,
Josiah became the 16th king of Yehuda at the early
age of just eight.
His father and grandfather before him had led the
people in idolatrous practice and are held largely
accountable for causing the people to stray from the
path of Hashem. However, it was clear from an early
age that Josiah was keen to abandon their ways and
revert to the path of his ancestors.
This culminated in the 18th year of his reign,
when he ordered that the temple previously used
for idolatry be restored by Hilkiah the Cohen.
It was now that Hilkiah found hidden a Sefer
Torah unseen for many generations.
When the Torah was shown and read to Josiah,
he immediately tore his garments in angst at hear-

t.
Es

This began a period of intense repentance, a

nationwide campaign of reform to remove any semblance of idolatry and the renewing of the covenant
between Hashem and His people.
It would have been easy for Josiah, born into royalty, to allow the nation to continue towards selfdestruction while repenting privately in the comfort
of his palace.
Yet we see the characteristics of true leadership as
he takes the future of his people to heart and embarks upon a national revolution. He epitomises the
teaching from Pirkei Avot: In a place where there
are no men, endeavour to be a man (2:2) and leads
from the front, having faith that people will follow.
Unfortunately, there were Jews so committed to
their idolatry that they continued to practice in secret.
Unaware of this, Josiah led the nation into battle
under the false notion that their righteousness would
save them, and he paid with his life.
However, this bleak ending should not mire his
efforts or the purity of his actions, as shown by the
prophet Jeremiah, who perpetuated his memory in
the Book of Lamentations.
Josiah surely knew the monumental task he
faced, yet proceeded undeterred, adhering firmly
to the precept that it is not incumbent upon you
to finish the task, but neither are you free to absolve
yourself from it (2:21Pirkei Avot).

With Yavneh Primary School opening in

September, do Jewish schools provide
the best education for our children?
BY RABBI SANDRA

KVIAT

THE GOVERNORS at Yavneh College

in Borehamwood were unsurprisingly
thrilled when the government announced they could build a primary
school on-site in time for the next academic year.
The chief reason for this new Orthodox school is that the areas two
existing Jewish primaries the Orthodox Hertsmere Jewish Day
School and pluralist Clore Shalom
are heavily oversubscribed.
Yavneh College president Benjamin Perl estimates there are about
2,000 Jewish primary-school-aged
children wishing to attend a Jewish
school and predicts there will need
to be two more built to meet the
demands of the burgeoning Jewish
community of Borehamwood".
But is this a good thing?
On the one hand, there is a real
need for good new primary schools.
There is a massive gap in the area of
primary education, which causes
worry and anxiety for parents.
There are also lots of positives
about Jewish schools in particular.
Although Yavneh Primary will be Orthodox, there are schools now which
reflect all branches of Judaism.
Jewish schools give children a
chance to be in a Jewish environment, learn Jewish and moral values
and can support their Jewish identity.
However there is a big challenge,
and that is avoiding isolation.
There is a big danger that pupils

could spend a lifetime in education

without ever meeting, or forming a
friendship with, someone outside the
Jewish community.
Jewish nursery, primary and secondary schooling followed by attending a university with a large JSoc
is not a good path.
We are British Jews and a part of
Britain. We therefore need to make
sure our kids see other parts of
Britain. Its good for them to have
real friendships with those of all
faiths, and none, and have an awareness of other cultures.
On the flip-side, non-Jewish children in other local schools dont have
the opportunity to see Jewish people
as their friends, peers and classmates
which can feed into anti-Semitism.
There is also the damage Jewish
schools do to our cheders, as parents, somewhat understandably, feel
that five days at school each week
gives a full Jewish education.
Once thriving, many Orthodox synagogues dont even have religion
schools any more and even Progressive attendances are falling.
The benefits of cheder are too
quickly discounted, not least how a
strong and fun religion school can engage children in a totally different
way from being at school.
Cheder can make children feel that
Judaism is something to be treasured, rather than just another part of
the school day to rank alongside
English, geography and maths.

BOUATTIA DISTORTS
MY VIEW OF ZIONISM
THE UPROAR surrounding the election of Malia
Bouattia as NUS president has been hard to
avoid, whether you have a strong interest in student politics or, like me, are less engaged.
Social media documents some relentless
heated exchanges between supporters of
Bouattia and those angered by her condemnation of Zionism.
For many the NUS presidents words feel like
an attack on their identities and values. Some
Jewish students have found themselves in a
range of crises, from concerns about anti-Semitism to existential questions regarding their relationship with Israel. This led me to think about
my personal relationship with Israel and Zionism.
While I understand Zionism as a deep, emotive
concept of a Jewish homeland, some in student
politics see it merely as a political manifestation.
The latter understanding is problematic, as
I feel my personal Zionism has been distorted.
Unfortunately, an ideology that provides promise and vision for many has been whittled
down by its opponents to be a divisive, unsavoury political term.
RSY-Netzer enables me to explore my identity
and understanding of Israel. Reform Zionism is
at the heart of our youth movement, believing
there should be a Jewish state in the Land of Israel with the ideals of peace, equality and justice made central.
I consider myself to be a liberal left-wing Zionist, something which I feel marries with my Reform Judaism and values. The events of the past
few weeks have deepened my concern, care
and love for Israel and I hope to continue exploring this with my youth movement when I
lead summer camp with RSY-Netzer in Israel.
The election of Malia Bouattia has raised
many questions across the Jewish and Zionist
community in the UK. Now more than ever it
is important we answer for ourselves how we
feel about Israel and how we define our own
Zionism.

HERO

This week, Liberal Judaisms

Alexandra Simonon marks
Star Wars Day by selecting
Princess Amidala AKA
Natalie Portman

ANY 12-YEAR-OLD who could

pull off the part of Mathilda in
Leon the lifelong abuse, neglect and all-around darkness
must be some kind of hero.
I remember being bowled
over by Portmans performance when Luc Bessons film
came out. I wondered where a
kid being brought up on Long
Island (also known as JAP Central) found the inspiration to
play the part so exactly, so
deeply right.
For Natalie Portman, that
was just the beginning. She is
still a brilliant actress, including
as Padm Amidala in the Star
Wars prequels, but these days

from commenting on antiSemitism, Israeli politics or

anything that might put their
careers in an uncomfortable
position, the most visibly-Jewish actress of her generation is
never afraid to come out and
speak her mind.
She called Benjamin Netanyahu racist over some of
his comments on Palestinians.
Some were quick to attack her
and call her a self-hater.
Belying them, she also
speaks very candidly about her
Jewish identity and upbringing
and about her fear of bringing
up her child in France when
anti-Semitism is so rife.

MY JEWISH

its her public bravery that impresses me most.

While many other Jewish
showbiz celebrities shy away

She was not afraid to speak

her mind on John Galliano in
the wake of his anti-Semitic
rant, in a way that never
sounded like lip service or PR.
Yet she was also one of the few
who said publicly that, after
making amends, he should be
given a second chance.
She has been involved in
charitable efforts to help Syrian
refugees for many years, well
before it became a fashionable
cause for celebrities.
Truthfulness, honesty, courage,
thoughtfulness, charity and forgiveness all these attributes
of a Jewish hero are why I love
Natalie Portman.

What should we see

in Jewish Gibraltar?
Dear David
My husband and I would like to experience a Jewish interest
visit to Gibraltar. We would appreciate your recommendation
and suggestions for a budget conscious, kosher weekend
break towards the end of the summer.
Janet

Dear Janet
A late summer Jewish interest trip to Gibraltar should still
guarantee warm weather and is the perfect time to visit a
community dating back to the 14th century.
British Airways, EasyJet and Monarch operate daily, low
cost flights from Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester, flying
you to the famous Rock in under three hours.
I would suggest that you base your stay at the excellent,
reasonably-priced Elliott Hotel situated on Main Street in the
heart of Jewish Gibraltar, giving you an immediate feel and
connection to the warm, friendly and very vibrant 700-strong
Jewish community.
All the places of interest are nearby and the hotel is just a
short stroll from Line Wall Shul, the largest of four very ancient
synagogues. Eating will not be a problem, with nearby kosher
restaurants heartily welcoming Jewish visitor from all over the
world.
You will find places of Jewish interest all around Gibraltar,
interlinked with Spanish, Moroccan and Arabic architectural
influence.
You should definitely book an organised sightseeing tour
of Gibraltar taking in all places of interest. Your tour will, of
course, include mingling with the world famous Barbary
Apes perched high above the ancient Caves at the very top of
the 1396 ft Rock, offering panoramic views overlooking Spain
and the Straits of Gibraltar.
I have no doubt you will enjoy a fascinating, interesting and
most rewarding weekend.

Dear Freya
By law, all landlords (or agents acting on behalf of landlords)
who take a deposit in England and Wales on an assured
shorthold tenancy agreement must protect it with an
authorised tenancy deposit protection scheme, such as
www.mydeposits.co.uk, within 30 days of receiving it
from the tenant. Key information about the protection
(the Prescribed Information) must also be served by the
landlord/agent to the tenant within the same 30 days
to fully comply.
At the end of the tenancy, if there is a disagreement over the
return of all or some of the deposit, the scheme offers
a free and impartial dispute resolution service to determine
the split. The service is evidence-based and both parties
must submit their evidence within certain timeframes.
Decisions made by the scheme are binding on both the
landlord/agent and the tenant.
There are two types of scheme available; custodial, whereby
the landlord/agent lodges the deposit with the scheme for
the duration of the tenancy agreement; or insurance-based,
whereby the landlord/agent holds the deposit themselves, but
pays a fee to the scheme to protect it.
Mydeposits is one of the largest schemes in the sector and
offers both types of scheme custodial and insurance-based.
Further information can be found at www.mydeposits.co.uk,
including helpful guides about dispute management and
compliance with the legislation. The whole protection and
dispute process can be manged online. There are slight
variations of the scheme in Scotland, Northern Ireland
and the Jersey States.

SHERWOOD
Raiders standing
on brink of history
IT WOULD seem North London Raiders MSFL side and
Chigwell Athletics Masters side are having a battle of their
own who can win the most trophies this season. The
Raiders wrapped up the double on Sunday their second
in two years thanks to a 6-2 win over Harmen, and now
have their sights set on winning the clubs first treble this
Sunday, when they take on Hendon in the Peter Morrison
final. Chigwell left the MSFL two seasons ago, though it
hasnt taken them long to make their mark in the Masters
game. Securing the Division One title on Sunday, theyre
now looking to achieve a double of their own when they
take on Brady A in their cup final, also this coming weekend. A double-header of action which could end with us
paying tribute to the two most successful Jewish clubs this
season.
WHILE THE most exciting thing to happen in the top flight
of English football this season was to see Tottenham throw
away a 2-0 lead at Chelsea on Monday night and end their
hopes of winning a first ever Premier League title, its all
going off (quite literally) in Israel. The second of two
matches, last week, between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Bnei
Sakhnin ended in a mass brawl between players, officials
and even match stewards, all of which resulted in the formers goalkeeper, Predrag Rajkovic, handed a three-match
ban for pushing the latters coach. Including him missing
Monday nights top-of-the-table clash against Hapoel Beersheba which ended in a goalless draw, one can only hope, if
youre off a Maccabi persuasion that is, that they can hold
their nerve better than others

THE VOICE OF JEWISH SPORT

A LORIAN Madanes hat-trick

helped FC Team B keep on track
for second spot in Division One
as they recorded an emphatic 50 win at Oakwood B.
Jake Weiner and Dave Grossman netted their other two, with
player-manager Mitch Young saying: We produced our best performance at the time it mattered
most. Defensively we were superb and everyone worked really
hard to ensure our shape remained intact at all times.
Im proud of everyone but
this was one of four games we
have to win so bring on the next
one.
North London Raiders C all
but consolidated third spot in Division Two as they beat FC Team
C 2-0. Oli Nathan and Oli Telvi
were on target, with Raiders
joint-manager Zack Gothelf saying: Another clean sheet and a
well fought victory was pleasing,
with us now needing just a point
to mathematically secure third.
Real Hendon got back to winning ways as goals from Rafi Addlestone, Lolu Hibbert and
Doron Shooter saw them to a 3-0
win over Boca Jewniors. Playermanager Chaim Gothold said: It
was a good performance, we
were always on top and should
have scored a few more.
Bocas Anton Nyman said: We
simply couldnt create enough
today and they took their chances
with some nice finishing. One
more chance left to get away
from the bottom of the table!
Faithfold C scored nearly a
quarter of their goals in one
morning as they thrashed Temple
Fortune 10-1. Jamie Kent helped
himself to four goals, Shai Davidi
scored a hat-trick, with Leor Harrel, Dan Yossman and Craig Cole
completing the rout.
Manager Rob Shooman said:
It was just one of those games
when everything we did came off,

Sandford (right) did likewise for Redbridge B in the Cup

4-1 up at half-time, it could have

been six or seven.
They didnt deserve to go in
at half-time four goals down, they
were playing well its just we got
everything right.
Tremendous admiration for
them they kept trying to the last
and threatened our goal on several occasions in the second half
but we just took most of our
chances ruthlessly.
It was a great performance by
the boys and some great football
played by us.
Aron Barnes scored for For-

tune, for whom player-manager

Jonathan Cohen said: There
was lots about the game I was
unhappy about. In general we
were poorer this week in the second half than we have been in
many other games this season.
Redbridge B claimed a
thumping 8-1 win over Brady
Maccabi in their Masters/MGBSFL Invitational competition tie.
Craig Sandford bagged a
hat-trick, with Richie Caplin,
Sam Moss, Daniel Andrews, Joe
Jordan and an own goal completing the rout.

Argentine nets his James record Chigwell crowned

first ATP tennis title javelin throw
Masters champions
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN
claimed his first ATP tour title
at the weekend as he beat
Grigor Dimitrov in the final of
the Istanbul Open.
The Jewish Argentine (pictured) found himself a set and
break down, but won 11 of
the last 12 games to secure a
6-7, 7-6, 6-0 win.
The 23-year-old said: It
was an amazing match for me,
I played well and fought all
match.
Ive practised really hard
to improve my tennis. I played
all the points with 100 percent
effort and I needed to. All the
matches are tough, against
Tomic, Dzumhur, Bagnis and
Delbonis. I played really well.
Schwartzman was though de-

nied a doubles title win to go

along with his singles success, as
he and compatriot Andres
Molteni were beaten by Israeli
Dudi Sela and Italian Flavio
Cipolla, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7.

JAVELIN THROWER
James Bongart threw
a seasons best at the

participants.
The
Nottingham

next week, when he
competes in the first

British League Premiership in Eton.

CHIGWELL PLAYER-MANAGER
Richard Slater hailed his absolutely
brilliant squad after they won the
Division One Masters title.
Goals from Adam Stolerman
and Daniel Sugarman saw them
beat Scrabble 2-0, with Slater saying: To win the title in what is only
our second season in Masters foot-

ball is superb.
It was an amazing effort by all involved and fully deserved. Its also
the clubs first league title since 2004,
so has been a long time coming.

Hendon mind games

as Raiders go for
historic treble
BY ANDREW

SHERWOOD
NORTH LONDON Raiders jointmanager Rob Richman says his
double winners will enjoy themselves on Sunday when they look
to claim the clubs first treble insisting opponents Hendon will be
the ones under pressure as they
look to avoid ending the season
trophyless.
The Raiders retained the Premier
Division title on Sunday thanks to a
6-2 win over Harmen, securing their
second consecutive double, and now
face Hendon in the Peter Morrison
Trophy final this weekend, as they
look to become the second Jewish
football team to win the treble, the
others being Hendons 2014 side.
Richman said: Hendon will probably feel a little more pressure as it's
their only chance for silverware this
season, but they are a great, experienced side so I'm sure that won't
have much of an impact.
We shouldn't really be in this final
but were put through by a technicality, for us it's a bonus and we'll just go
out and enjoy the occasion.
Hendon manager David Garbacz
insists his side are the underdogs,
though says theyre desperate to
prevent the Raiders from matching
their treble-winning feat. He said:

Raiders must be favourites. Theyre

unbeaten this season, have just won
the league and the Anekstein and
are going for the treble.
All the pressure is on them
theyve had a fantastic season and
have been head and shoulders
above every team in terms of consistency and performance. Were desperate to prevent them from
completing the treble that is our
speciality and we will be doing everything we can to prevent them from
doing so. We go into this match full
of confidence and belief were the
ones with history at stake as well
going for a third consecutive National Cup, which is no mean feat.
We have had lots of cup final experience over the last few years so
nerves shouldnt be a factor.
Summing up what winning a treble
would mean to the club, Richman
said: Everyone wants to win titles
and cups and to win all three would
be great. There will be so much great
attacking quality on show that I hope
it will be a classic cup final.
However, whether we win or lose
on Sunday this has been an unbelievable season, one in which we've all
enjoyed and can be extremely
pleased with.
Sundays final at Wingate & Finchley
kicks-off at 5.30pm. Full cup preview
