Teaching and Learning Theory

Nowadays education become more different than the past and its
improved more and more and this changing because of the new generation
which related to the technology on most of their using. as a result, the way of
teaching also become different there is a lot of strategy can teacher use in her
teaching style, and I think that B.I.L.T. is the best way for teaching student.
Building Understanding In Literacy and Teaching have five stages and
advantages and limitation on it.

Describe the language teaching theory approach:

B.U.I.L.T is a five letter which abbreviation for the sentence Building
Understanding In Literacy and Teaching and it is mean the different practice
which the teacher is giving the student as a cycle from the first step engagement
to the last step reflection. All five step are related together, and if the teacher
follows it correctly she will get a successful class. The first step is engagement on
this stage teacher engages student to the lesson, and she will know what they
already know about the lesson teacher can give the student a fun things to
attract them to the lesson like warming up, video, songs or rhymes. On my
teaching practice, I have a calendar lesson, and I show student stereophonic of a
calendar. Another example for engagement, I show them a video that is related
to the lesson and it is a conversation between two characters are talking, and my
lesson was about how to write a sentence using 'I am going to" so they will

benefit from the video. The second stage is building knowledge teacher have to
B.U.I.L.T the information which student already know about the lesson on this
stage there will be a presentations, asking question, give student new
information and reading. On my teaching practice for this stage, I asked the
question about the essential events on the month for calendar lesson for
example I show them the large calendar and open in April month, and I ask what
is the important event on this month few student will answer then I teach them
new events that they do not now it as 22 of April is Earth day and so on. Third
strategy is transformation on this step student will create, make, practice,
scaffolding, and use new skills. An example for transformation from my teaching
practice I gave student empty calendar and I ask them to fill it of the name of the
month and their birthday and the important event of the month. Another
example for the transformation on story lesson is I gave a student panel, and
sentence in a small card and I ask them to organize the event from the story and
after I read it for them, from the first thinks happen to the end, and I ask them to
glue the sentence on the panel and when they finish I ask them to read it for
their friends. Then presentation step on this step teacher will ask the student to
write, drawing, telling, demonstrate new understanding and listing and learning
from the teacher and each other. An example for the presentation from my
teaching practice I gave the student worksheet and I ask them to answer it
individually to practice what they learn, for example, in calendar lesson I gave
them worksheet to write the month in order and write a sentence about what
they are going to on this month so they will write, tell, and learn from each other.
The last step is reflection on this stage teacher will get student feedback, and
she will know if she achieves her goal from the lesson plan or not. I think
reflection have to be fun like teacher can provide student gave with question,
review, discussion, or warp up. In my teaching practice, I gave the student a

snake and ladder game, and they like it a lot and I think they benefit from it a lot
because they have a speaking and listing, and they get information from each
other. (Love.K, Pigdon.K, Baker.G & Hamston.J, 2001)

Benefits:
The benefits of this approach are it will let student learn better and have
fun during the lesson also teacher will know if the students understand the
lesson or not from their participation. In B.U.I.L.T strategy it have a different way
of teaching that student will talk, listen, write, practice, and present it do not
depend on the teacher only but also the student will have a huge percentage of
participation. To focus on what student will benefit from each strategy her is a list
of benefits student will have from engagement to reflection. First, engagement
on this stage student will become interesting and curious about the subject also
they will express about what they already know and understanding from the
topic. Second, building knowledge on this stage student will try a different way to
answer the question, and they will compare the result and impression they get.
Third stage is transformation on this stage student will explain their purpose and
learn new information. Forth stage is presentation use the new information they
learn to explain a new idea. The last stage is reflection on this stage student will
learn new information, and they may have some question to ask to make a
dapper understand. (Cortez, 2013)

Limitations:
B.U.I.L.T have five strategies to teach the student, and it is attracting
student more and let them like studying so the teacher who will use it have to be
creative teacher and have an idea for the lessons. There are some limitations for

this strategy, and it is some teacher need more materials to use in the classroom
like, photo, flash card, and different technology...etc, so some teacher need a
support from the school to prepare this staff for teacher to make it easier in
teaching. Also, the other limitation is that each stage need time to do it so
teacher must plan and manage the time exactly for the class period. On my
teaching practice, I use B.U.I.L.T strategy and when I was on the last stage, and I
gave the student a snake and ladder game and the time up so we don't take
enough time to play it and some student become upset because they like it as a
result for this teacher have to be specific on time to gave each stage enough
time and student benefit from the lesson.

I think B.U.I.L.T better than P.P.P. because it have more stage, and it help
student to understand the lesson more in a different way, and they will not be
boring of the lesson. Also, it is good for a teacher because she will get student
feedback so she will know if student understands the lesson or not. However
teacher must choose the strategy which refer to her teaching style to be more
confidant and gave student everything she can do but in a modern way.
