ISTC 301 Practical Teaching Lesson Plan Template

Teachers Names: Dana Robinson & Gabby Del Priore

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Date: May 5, 2016

Subject Area: Mathematics

Learning Objective(s):
Students will be able to:

Identify different fraction quantities.

Build real-life connections with fractions.

Apply fraction knowledge to divide a whole into equal parts.

Standards:
Common Core Standard(s):
Major Standard 3.NF.A.1
Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b
equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.
Major Standard 3.NF.A.2
Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line
diagram.
ISTE.NETS for Students:
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to
facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-toface and virtual environments.
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments
incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to
develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETSS.
Assessments:
Diagnostic 1: The teacher will foster a class discussion so that students may state what they
already know about fractions, where they have seen fractions, or what they think fractions are.
The teacher will use their answers to assess the level of background knowledge.
Diagnostic 2: As a hook activity, students will use their individual devices to complete Kahoot
Fractions (15 basic questions). The teacher will receive the student scores and record them
for comparison to the post-test at the end of the week.

Formative: Students will each be given the opportunity to individually complete a practice
activity on Pizza Fraction Party Promethean activity. The teacher will observe the students
success with the practice.
Summative: At the end of the class, the students will complete and turn in Fraction Practice
worksheet. The teacher will grade them.
Teaching Materials:

Internet access (Kahoot, Brain Pop Jr.)

Kahoot quiz Fractions

Individual devices (iPads)

ActivInspire- Pizza Fraction Party (Promethean board)

Fraction pieces (construction cut-outs)

Notes worksheet

Instructional PowerPoint about numerators and denominators

Fraction Bar worksheet

Fraction Practice worksheet

Anticipatory Set:
First, the teacher will introduce the objectives. Introduce fractions as a new unit. Clarify that
the students know a lot about fractions, even though fractions have not been taught in school
yet. Define unclear terms.
Then, students will participate in a class discussion. The teacher will pose the following
questions: What do you already know about fractions? Where have you seen fractions? What
do you think fractions are?
As a hook, the students will complete the Kahoot Fractions pre-assessment. Kahoot gives the
impression of a game more than a quiz.
Procedures:
1. Key concepts: The teacher will have colorful, construction paper cut-outs of
different fractions. Whole shapes should be divided to represent the following terms:
whole, piece, half, third, quarter, sixth, eighth. As the teacher defines each term, the
students should draw the representation to fill in their notes sheet.
2. Instruction: The teacher will present a PowerPoint to define numerator and
denominator. Connections will be drawn to the vocabulary that was just defined.
3. Practice: Use ActivInspire on the Promethean Board to complete Pizza
Fraction Party. Initially, the teacher should scaffold and show the students how to
complete one of the activities. Once the students begin to show understanding, they
will individually come to the board and complete a problem. The teacher should
announce that each student will have to complete a problem, and keep track of which
students have already been up to the board. One tool to keep track of that is through
popsicle sticks with each students name. Make sure that the students are completing
the practice correctly.
4. Partner Activity: Students will receive the Fraction Bar worksheet. They will

first color each strip one color, and then cut each piece out. Have the students write
their initials on the back of each piece. Provide the students with a plastic bag to store
their fraction bar pieces. Once their pieces are ready, have them explore these questions
with a partner:
a. What pieces are equivalent to ?
b. How many pieces does it take to make ? What does this
value look like as a fraction?
c. Do the fractions get bigger or smaller when the denominator gets
larger?
d. How many pieces does it take to make ? What does this
value look like as a fraction?
UDL Implementation (be sure to reference the UDL Educators Checklist for this section)
Provide specific examples of the components in this lesson plan that exemplify the following:
Multiple Means of Representation: This lesson will include visual representations like
Kahoot and the SmartBoard as well as hands on activities such as worksheets and construction
cutouts
Multiple Means of Engagement : Students will be able to work alone with worksheets or
through group activities on the SmartBoard.
Multiple Means of Action and Expression: Students are able to show their ability and
understanding through multiple means. They can choose to answer questions through Kahoot
that are anonymous to the class, in front of the entire class on the SmartBoard or through
worksheets.
TPACK: We chose the technological approach in our lesson. We chose Kahoot and
Activinspire. These are both interactive tools that will help us teach this lesson. Students will
be able to answer questions through games on Kahoot and engage in fun activities on the
SmartBoard. Kahoot is a great tool that will allow us to get a feel for what the students know
before our lesson and then what they have learned and if their skills have improved.
Activinspire on the Promethean board is interactive which allows the students to be more
engaged and have fun learning as well.
Closure:
Once the students have completed the faction bar activity, the teacher will review the answers
that they obtained. The teacher will wrap up the information the students learned through
connecting to real-world examples. Each student will draw a picture of something that they see
in daily life that has fractions.
Next, they will transition to the summative assessment. The students will now independently
complete the worksheet Fraction Practice. The teacher will collect and grade the worksheet.

If students finish with extra time, they can go onto Brain Pop Jr. and play fraction games.
