Goal and rationale

To know the students and how

they learn is always going to
be challenging, especially for a
pre-service teacher.
Secondary school is going to
be dynamic as classes will be
changing frequently therefore
having enough time to know
and understand the students is
minimal. This creates a good
opportunity to set standard 1
as a goal. This standard allows
a teacher to establish
themselves as an educator,
and it is imperative that they
can relay their knowledge in a
way that students find
engaging. This can only be
achieved by knowing and
understanding your students
individually and as a class.

To be adaptive is crucial for a

teacher and if I can take this
away from my next
professional experience it
would be a step in the right
direction to developing a
positive learning framework.
Ensuring the students feel safe
and that they have something
to contribute is very important
in the classroom.

Standard descriptor
This goal will be achieved by
developing an understanding of
students and classes I will teach.
Beginning with the first lessons I will
establish certain similarities and
differences between how students
learn. My understanding will develop
through trying new strategies and
new ideas to see how students react
to these certain ways of teaching.
Class management plan.
Maintaining a class profile.
Specific actions such as finding
interests and linking them to the
subject being taught and to the
wider world. This is a common
theme in secondary school in
particular as students are always
asking how something is relevant in
real life. I would put measures into
place to identify ways of making
meaning for these students. Hence
linking to the second standard. My
personal experience regarding this
standard is that its crucial for
teachers as it enables them to bring
specific aspects of the students
lives into the classroom. While
observing my supervising teacher,
she would often link aspects of life
that her students enjoy and bring
these aspects into her lessons.
Something I hope to achieve.
Practice cultural sensitivity,
acknowledge cross curricular
priorities. Maintain the class
demographic that the supervising
teacher has developed and I will
attempt to build upon this positive
framework by giving equal support
and opportunities to all students. A
positive environment is essential for
education if this can be achieved
even in the hardest circumstances it
begins to model what learning
encompasses. Students will receive
the same treatment as their peers,
creating equality in the classroom
which is a step towards everyone

Evidence needed
It will be relevant if
students maintain an
amount of engagement
and attentiveness
throughout each lesson,
These observations will
be recorded throughout
lesson feedback reports.
Assessment, both formal
and informal, will
determine whether
students have been active
and engaged in the class.
This will provide evidence
regarding which students
have been and who
havent been developing
areas of improvement.
Evidence should range
from improvements on
assessments to verbal
responses from the
student. Youll be able to
determine problems and
work on making them
positives.

Students will be actively

participating in class
through discussion either
in small groups or class
discussions led by the
teacher. Collaborative
learning will take place as
soon as students feel
comfortable with their
peers and the teacher.
Students that seem shy
and withholding will
become an active
participant during class
discussion. Class
discussion will lead to a

During this professional

experience my aim towards
the community will be to
establish a healthy relationship
between colleagues, parents
and the wider community in
any way that I can. My
reasoning for this is because I
was only able to achieve this
in a small way in my last
practical. I hope to assist not
only my associate teacher but
the wider school community.

engaging and contributing to the

learning environment. In my time as
a pre service teacher it may hard to
create trust between a group of
students, but because I have been
fortunate enough to participate my
practicals in classrooms with a PLF,
it was easy to establish myself and
help students learn. I know this is
not the case everywhere but
considering I understand what a
PLF classroom looks like I will be
able to differentiate from a
classroom that does not work under
this framework.

specific point or
understanding. The
teacher may need to keep
students on task as
students often get sidetracked and follow
different tangents
searching for answers.
Evidence in subjects such
as English will have work
from class discussions
recorded on paper. This
content could be
measured in various
assessment tasks such
as written responses and
oral presentations. While
most students will feel
that they are in a positive
and engaging
environment some
students may not. If this is
the case something
needs to change.
Students that are shy or
withholding should view
the classroom as a safe
environment dedicated to
developing their
knowledge of the subject.
I must be attentive to
signs such as these and
work towards changing
the classroom
environment in attempt to
help these students feel
safe.

Initiatives such as extracurricular

activities are ways I could connect
with the community (school
community).
Engage with the parents of the
students under my care as a preservice teacher. This may mean
inviting parents or guest speakers
into the class. This can only be done
after understanding the class and
what engages them the most. It may
be difficult for some parents to
participate in classroom activities
due to work commitments, but if an

participate within their
son/daughters education.
The may or may not be

in the secondary stage

arise either party
shouldnt feel accepting of
such an opportunity.
Parents will be present in
the classroom only if they

many parents could be keen to be
involved. If this is not possible guest

their insight into a specific aspect of
a subject, for example a Vietnam

class about the Vietnam War. Both
these methods will create a greater
connection to the community.
