Now that we have nearly completed the course, please think about the
following questions and answer them as best you can. You will need to refer
to your initial assessment to complete some of the following questions.
1) Concepts: Refer to your initial assessment (question 8) and any quizzes,
writing assignments or handouts that were a part of your class and that used
classroom terminology. Include what you feel are the 4 most important
concepts from this class.
A Color Unity
B

One/Multiple point perspective

Positive/Negative Space

CONTRAST

2) Refer to your course syllabus. Please list what you feel are the three most
important Course Outcomes for you in this course, and briefly explain why
you chose them.
A Develop creative visual solutions that recognize and address
contemporary issues.
I chose this concept because one of the hardest part for me to learn was to
be not only creative, but to also use that creativity to solve the challenges
that each project presented.
B

Recognize and incorporate a variety of global influences and perspectives in developing

creative solutions.
I chose this concept because this class taught me how to use a variety of influences from all
over the world in order to broaden and make not only my art projects better, but mentally as
well. This class taught me to utilize many different cultural and regional influences and
viewpoints to help me find deeper meanings behind art, such as the haiku project we are
working on.

Incorporate information from different fields of study, and employ

a range of ideas in creative problem solving.
Being a former engineer and now business major, a big proportion of the way I tackle new
challenges is usually the same. Throw out initial thoughts, then jot down notes on what I want
to do, how I am going to solve this problem, etc. I incorporated this technique for my art
projects a lot, especially when I didnt really have an initial idea to jump off from.

3) Please insert up to three images of what you feel are your most successful
projects in the large spaces below.

From the lists you developed above, please list below, in order of importance, 23 key Course Outcomes (List 2), or Concepts (List 1) that you think you addressed
in each of these projects.

3. Recognize and incorporate a

creative solutions.

3. Incorporate information

study, and employ a
range of ideas in creative
problem solving.

3. Recognize and incorporate a

variety of global influences and
perspectives in developing
creative solutions.

4) Consider again your definition of creativity from the Initial Assessment

(question 9). Place your definition, or a new definition, if your thinking has
changed, in the box below:
The ability to think abstractly and to be able to utilize that imagination in
order to present or to convey and idea or concept.

5) Based on your definition, choose your most creative project and insert
the image in the box below on the left. Being creative, or developing
creative solutions, is a form of critical analysis and reasoning-a key
competency developed in this course. Describe your creative problem
solving process for the project you chose by addressing each of the questions
below.
Image
A) What was the goal of this
project? What were you trying
to achieve?
The goal was to address a
concern that we have, through
use of repetition of an icon.
B) What were some of the
constraints in developing
solutions for this project? Were
there limitations in Time?
Media? Space? Scale?
Not only did we have to repeat
the icon, the icon itself could
not be morphed into another
icon entirely.
C) What are some of the key
class concepts (see question
#1) that you considered in
developing your solution for
this project?
I knew that if the icon needed
to be repeated, then
something would need to be
changed to one of them in
order for my message to really
stand out, therefore I chose to
contrast it somehow.
D) What new approaches did you try, in terms of media, new techniques, and/or
composition choices, to try to achieve your goals for this project? What was
successful? What would you do differently?
One of the new approaches that I tried was a fusion. I combined the silhouette
of a regular man, along with the wifi symbol going along his head to represent
his connection to the online world, and disconnect from reality. At first, I wanted
to do a repetition of many regular men surrounding one, singular wifi-man,
but towards the end, I realized that I needed to repeat the icon, so instead, I
opted to make the icon repeat, but with one vastly contrasting with the others.
One of the things that I believe I did very well on was displaying the sharp
contrast between those who are slightly in the virtual world, vs the person who

is disconnected from reality entirely. A couple of things that I would do different

is to take out the red dots, I wanted to add more contrast to the middle person,
and I thought that red was the way to go. Looking back, it may have been better
without the red, and more impactful as well. I would have also maybe repeated
the icon a bit more, as now I see that 9 is a little bit too little.

6) Throughout this class, we have begun to learn a new language a

language that attempts to communicate visually, through images or objects.
Do you think it is possible to communicate ideas, feelings, and/or emotions
through images or objects, without having to rely on words? Research online,
and find an image that you feel effectively communicates an idea or concept.
It can be a fine art image from an artist you like, or it can be an image from
popular culture so long as you feel it communicates effectively without
relying on words. Insert the image in the box below, and then answer the
questions.
A) What idea(s) and/or concept(s) do
you think this image communicates?
Very Sharp Contrast, a bit of realism,
as well as color unity, space, and
perspectives.
B) Explain which visual elements
communicate these ideas or
concepts. For example, is it color,
composition, facial expressions, size
or scale? What else?
Supermans side is very bright,
vibrant and displays very warm
colors, such as red and yellow, giving
a sort of hopeful tone or even a sense
of security. Batmans on the other
hand, has very dark colors, his
shades of blue are very dark and
faded, and it's full of blacks and
greys, giving off a tone of fear and
relief that youre not the one that hes
coming after. Their facial expressions
also convey this. Batman has a sort of
scowl that could instill the fear of God
into someone, whereas Supermans
face while firm and determined,
doesnt nearly as much seem as
frightening. The idea of this piece was
to show the deep contrast these two
heroes have not only in looks, but to
how they operate as well.
C) Why do you think it is important
for us to be able to communicate
visually?
It is fairly easy to communicate
verbally, whereas visually, while at
first glance it seems easy, it is
actually very challenging as I have
found out in this class. You could say

all the ideas you want to say to

someone if you have the time. But
with art, you have such a limit on
how much you can put on the canvas
before it's just a cluttered mess.

7) What did you learn in this course that has connections to your life
experience outside of school?
One of the most important skills that I have learned in this class is to be able
to think a little bit more critically on everything that I see or do. With the
projects that we worked on, nothing is as it seems, especially with the Haiku
project. While it is a very challenging project, because we are not allowed to
use any nouns that were in the poems, it forces us to think a little bit past the
words and seek deeper thoughts that the poets had. Nothing they write is on
accident and it is our job to seek the poem within the poem so to speak. And
to have that skill is extremely useful because sometimes things arent always
what they seem, and because I am getting more and more comfortable
looking for the little details and hidden messages, I can appreciate a wider
range of things much more.
8) How do you think your life experiences influenced the artwork that you
made in this course?
This is especially seen in the first project with the maps, my cultural
background was the primary focus of the project, as seen by the two halfs of
Vietnam. This can also be seen on the second project. I take care of my
younger cousins quite often, and it baffled me how they were so intent on
sticking to their smart devices and had no interest in playing outside or
getting some fresh air, because when I was younger, playing outside with
friends was what I looked forward to after school. And to see them so stuck to
their phones bothered and kind of worried me a lot more than I thought.
9. (Refer to # 15 on initial assessment) which of the following would be a
violation of academic integrity?
a. Turning your friends artwork in from last year with your name on it
b. Copying a paragraph from an Art History book and changing one or two words
in your written essay
c. Buying a custom-written research paper online
d. Using facts from a web page, but naming the website and author in your
essay
