Discourse Community Map Response
Everyone in society today is part of a community type environment.
Whether it be family, friends, school, or a job, people can always come
together where everyone works in unity and gives back to the community.
How we use our talents to give back is also an important factor to have while
enhancing the chance to give back. There are some ways people, including
myself, can do to be better people for their community. It can start beginning
within yourself and your life around you, which includes your family and
friends.
My familys community is having to trust and respect each other at all
times. We are very talkative amongst each other and we like to be in touch
with one another. The language we use is different for every family member.
The level of closeness with each family member is different which conveys
the language for each person in the family. For example, my aunt keeps up
with todays social background with texting and emojis. A text from her
would say Heyyy everyone!! We r having a get together for Matts b-day @
our place @ 2. Dnt forget to bring ur own drinks! My other aunt, who is a
little bit older, is not very informal when she speaks because she was taught
to be formal with everyone she talks to. A message from my other aunt
would say Hello everyone. We are having a birthday party for Samantha this
Saturday at our house. It starts at 3:00 pm and dont forget to bring some

sweets. Thank you. The topics discussed within our family are topics about
the family and their own social lives. We also bring up school, work, and our
own personal beliefs. Our family community is very close with one another.
My friends community is a little more different because of how
friendships develop. Ive met most of my friends at school, at parties, or they
would be mutual friends. Most of the language and text between my friends
are very informal. There is hardly a time I would talk formal with my friends
unless it was a serious topic being held in the conversation. For instance, if I
wanted to ask a friend to hang out on the weekend I would say, Yo! Lets chill
2nite or wha? Lets go downtown or something. Sometimes my friends and I
have conversations where the text and speaking is different than the usual
way we speak. Another example would be, I understand completely.
Sometimes it is hard to know how people think or how people treat others.
Its just plain rude. Being friendly helps to develop friendships. Just by
saying Hello or How are you today can be a step to being the friendly
person anyone can be. Having that mindset has led me to have the friends
and the building friendships I have now.
Vocal performance is part of why I attend school and why I am
surrounded by the university community. Getting admitted into UTEP was a
long process, but I was able to continue my education here as well as pursue
my major as a vocal performance major. Usually classes are known for their
lectures and for note taking. The concept of classes is also to be able to get a
better understanding about the subject you are studying for. Usually the

language differs on the situation. If we are in a lecture, sometimes the

language can be informal, depending on the professor. In cases with
homework, essays, and take home quizzes the language must be formal. My
music classes is what gets me more involved in the campus community.
Vocal performance majors meet lots of other performance majors, they
perform for audiences as a grade, and they get involved in other music
courses to expand their musical talents. The language used for my major is
informal when talking to other colleagues and expressing your technique.
The language in the music itself can also be informal and in some cases
informal due to the age of the music scores being given. Vocal performance
is more about performing, technique and really understanding the art of
music. I was able to join the music group and perform because I was able to
show my enthusiasm for expressing myself in my music. As of now, most of
my everyday life decisions are around these four main important themes.
Eventually, I want to be able to expand my community as I grow and learn
from my experience now.
