Major Competency Area: A Nursing Knowledge
Competency: A8- Nursing Science Subcategory: A-8-13 Describe the role of the LPN in health promotion and disease prevention. One significant learning experience in the NFDN 1002 in lecture class while going over Unit 4 Nutrition & Hydration include wound care the teacher explained to us about the important of taking care patient who are risk in bedsore. Before these topics I did not know that how important its to care of the client who high risk of bedsore. I didnt know when client are on bed or in chair for too long they can develop ulcers. According to Potter & Perry pressure ulcers have a high prevalence rate in all health care settings. It is estimated that one individual in four within the Canadian health care system has some issue with skin integrity. For example during the lecture when I saw the picture of pressure ulcer. I was so surprised how deep the ulcers. I learned that when we take care of bed rest client we need to take extra carefully especially repositioning every 2 hour during the shift, this will reduce bed shore in client body and reduce and sored. As a nurse we can promote and prevent their pressure ulcer through carefully. For example during the lab class we did a repositioning client and I apply what I learned in theory class by repositioning client in within every 2 hour rule. I also apply pillow on the client bed to reduce bedsore or eliminate pressure ulcer. This will prevent and promote health in a client. I would rate my proficiency in the competency of the health promotion and disease prevention as fair. I understand the competency in theory, and in class scenarios, but have not had the chance to apply it to my student nursing practicum.
In my current student nursing practice I will be able to use this
knowledge to develop an appropriate nursing intervention for the health promotion and disease prevention in the client scenario, encourage proper body alignment to prevent sored bed when they are in bed. In my future nursing practice I will be able to develop and apply appropriate nursing interventions so the client in my care may have the best possible outcome that they need to live healthy.
