Gieck, DJ, and S Olsen. "Holistic Wellness as a Means to Developing a Lifestyle Approach to
Health Behavior Among College Students." Journal of American College Health : J of Ach. 56.1
(2007). Print.
In the past 10 years people have been trying to push toward increasing the physical
health in the United states, especially since more adults and adolescents are becoming
obese and sedentary. (Gieck, 29) This article focuses on fixing that problem by
incorporating a holistic lifestyle in a particular group of people, which is college students.
They use Hettlers model of holistic wellness which includes six broad dimensions:
physical wellness, emotional wellness, spiritual wellness, social wellness, occupational
wellness, and intellectual wellness. (Gieck, 29) They included all types of people in
college that was over 18 years old and the results came out as predicted. The purpose of
this article was to display how holistic wellness affects people lives and doing an
experiment on people displayed that.
After reading this article, it proved to me that living a holistic lifestyle is worth trying out,
especially when you are very sedentary. This article gives a good perspective to my
inquiry topic which is explaining more on what a holistic lifestyle is and what it consists

of. I wasnt surprised about the results of this experiment they did because when stop
being sedentary you automatically feel better about your life. When you become more
active and get more knowledge about nutrition, you have a different outlook on things.
The results display that people actually stuck with exercising regularly and having good
nutrition after the program worked. This just displays to me on how living a holistic
lifestyle is so beneficial to people in so many different ways.
Knowing this was an experiment on college makes it a credible source because they put
so much detail on what they did and it could easily be proven. At the very end of the of
this article they list a lot of references, which makes it credible because you can look up
those references to make sure what they are saying makes sense. Observing where it
came from, which was a journal, also displays the strong credibility in this article. All
these aspects make this source very credible, which is a reason why I chose it. It will
make a great source for my inquiry project with all the juicy detail and strong credibility.

Spector, Tim D. The Diet Myth : Why the Secret to Health and Weight Loss Is Already in Your
Gut. New York: Overlook, 2015. Print.
For my second source the book is set up in different sections so I chose about four
sections to focus on which are exercise and will power, does exercise really help you lose
weight, juicing and detox miracles, and sunshine not supplements. Starting off with the
first 2 sections which discuss exercise and the sedentary of people. Some studies have
said that sitting down watching television increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes,
regardless of how much we exercise. (Spector, 32) The purpose of all these sections is to

prove the stuff we believe in wrong. This will connect to the subject of my inquiry
project.
Although this book doesnt talk about holistic wellness it relates to it very much
by talking about going more of the natural way to lose weight and become a better
person. In one of the sections it talks about how vitamins do not really do as much as the
natural way does. The example they used was vitamin D. A study they did revealed that
taking vitamin D supplements showed no evidence that it reduces death or fracture.
(Spector, 230) This example displays the perspective it gives to my inquiry project. The
credibility of this source will also be good for my inquiry project.
I know this source is credible because its an actual book which had to go through a lot of
peer reviews to get published. Also at the end of the book it includes references for each
chapter which gives me the power to research what he is saying in his book. the author
makes this book a credible source because he is a professor and he is a physician at Guys
and St. Thomas Hospital. This background information displays that he has experience
working with people and he is open to opportunities to do research on the things he talks
about in his books. These two aspects make this source a very credible and good to use
for my inquiry project.

Brownell, Kelly D. LEARN Program for Weight Control. Dallas: American Health,
1989,1990,1991. Print.

My third source is kind of set up like my last source but there is less sections. I chose two
sections to include for my inquiry project, which was reasons for overweight and
shopping for food. You know how people blame their glands for weighing a lot, well the
truth is, is that most people who are overweight have no gland problems. (Brownell, 1920) Well I guess overweight people can stop making up excuses and lose weight if they
want to. After talking about why people are overweight, shopping for food is the next key
thing. They explain that when shopping for food it is better to buy goods that require
some type of preparation because some many foods are processed these days and that
brings on more calories in your diet. (Brownell, p. 83-84) the purpose of this source is to
tell us bluntly about weight control which includes dieting. This connects to my inquiry
project also.
This book really opened my eyes to why people are overweight and it displays how lazy
people have become and making excuses for themselves. This connects to my subject of
holistic wellness because it displays why people should be more apt to losing weight and
having better nutrition. When they talk about how to go grocery shopping, it includes
what I am looking for which is to shop more clean and natural. Most people today
grocery shop and buy so much processed food. It feels people bodies up with so much
bad stuff which causes many diseases and problems in their future. This displays how this
book is relevant to my inquiry project and it is also a credible source.
My third source is credible because the first page of this book includes a lot of
information on where it comes from and it includes how the author is from Yale
University. The publishing company which is the American health publishing company
also makes it more credible because its easy to research and prove. Some more

information about the author is that he is well known internationally and has his PHD
which makes him very credible since a lot of people know who he is. The strong
background of the author makes this book a great credible source for my inquiry project.

Achieve a Healthy Lifestyle. Perf. Stephanie Capiron and Jerome Velinsky. Films on Demand.
Video Education America, 13 Aug. 2010. Web. 1 Apr. 2016.
My fourth source is quite different from the previous ones because it is a twenty-fiveminute-long video about achieving a healthy lifestyle. They talk about unhealthy
lifestyles which includes smoking and drinking. Smoking and drinking causes major
diseases like cancer and heart problems. It explains what a healthy lifestyle is which
includes the same aspects as living a holistic lifestyle. Of course it includes having a
healthy diet because that ties into maintaining a healthy weight and dont forget about
portion control. The purpose of this video was to explain how to achieve a healthy
lifestyle the right way, which connects to the subject of my inquiry project.
This video was very informational about the risks of living an unhealthy lifestyle which
made living a healthy lifestyle look even better to live. I like how they acted out how
living an unhealthy lifestyle affects the people around and people notice how different
you act. The relevance is very close to my inquiry project because it explains very
broadly what a healthy lifestyle is which is holistic wellness.

The lady gave plenty

of examples of the healthy lifestyle which will help me out when I do my inquiry subject.
Since this is an educational video I know this information is very credible.

Artis-Hampton 6

This was the first video I saw that was credible because it is for educational purposes and
because of the way it was produced. The producer is video education America which is a
very reliable source because when you research it many positive, credible things come
up. also at the end of the video it includes credits which gives me the opportunity to do
more research on the people in the movie and on the producers. The strong background
on the production makes this video a great credible source for my inquiry project.

Renter, Elizabeth. "4 Ways to Live More Holistically Today." Natural Society. 25 June 2014.
Web. 1 Apr. 2016.
My final source is from a website and it includes ways to live a more holistic lifestyle.
Holistic is defined as the wellness of all of the interconnected parts and aspects working
towards the health of our entire selves. (Renter) She includes four ways to improve your
way of living a holistic lifestyle. This includes practice mindfulness, respecting your
body, eating clean foods and focusing on positive relationships. These four aspects
conclude the whole point of living a holistic lifestyle. The purpose of this article was to
share her opinion on what holistic means and what it consists of.
I really enjoyed reading this article because I like how she defined the word holistic and I
liked how she explained four aspects to live more holistically. Although figuring out how
to live more holistically takes way more than 4 ways, she still compressed it pretty well
into four bullet points. The first bullet point I didnt get at first until I had to read it again.
It was basically saying to not worry about what happened in the past and focus on the

Artis-Hampton 7

here and now. (Renter) This article is obviously relevant to my inquiry project because it
explains directly about what living a holistic lifestyle is really about.
After researching about this author, I see that she is a credible source because of her
background. She is a journalist from Bellevue university and she is known for writing
about many issues and they have been featured on websites such as Huffington post and
Forbes. When I click on her name she has a lot of articles she has written so I believe that
makes her more of a credible source also. Something else that makes this source credible
is the main name of the website because it has so much more to it than her article. A lot of
articles are posted on this mainstream which is natural society, so it has to be a credible
source. Since the author has so many more articles, this is a very good source for my
inquiry project and it will bring more definition to the word holistic throughout my
inquiry.
