Music Concert Report- Classical and Romantic
On November 6, 2014 I attended the Classical and Romantic
concert located in room LCH A103 at CSUDH. The concert focused on
Classical and Romantic music, it was split into two categories: vocalists
and instrumentalists. The vocalists were Jolly Rodriguez, Daisy Santos,
Emily Chea, Devan LeBlanc, Michael DAleo and Veronica Jacobe.
Patrick Paresa gave a power point presentation about the history of the
string quartet and examples of the string quartet in F major, 1st
movement. Following the power point was the intermission, and then
the commencement of the instrumentalists. The instrumentalists
included Kasey Holt, Alejandro Pelaez, Tamer Maamoun, Woody Kim,
Surenna Saffari, Michelle Castillo and John Warner. The instrumentalists
used a variety of instruments like the violin, piano, guitar and the
saxophone.
The concert was held in room LCH A103, which is actually the
room where we attend class, so it was fairly familiar and small. The
majority of the audience was students; surprisingly they were very
supportive and quiet throughout the performances. In total the

audience filled up about 90% off the classroom. However, after
intermission half of the audience decided not to come back. At first
glance the program seemed fairly short having only 18 performances,
but as the performances progressed it got very lengthy. According to
the program the vocalist Jolly Rodriguez was suppose to start the
concert, but a last minute change required Kasey Holt, with violin, and
Michael Cooper on the piano to open the concert with Sergei
Rachaninoff. Holts and Coopers performance gave a feeling of grief
and sadness; the violin was low and beautiful, and the piano
complemented the softness of the violin.
My favorite performer was Jolly Rodriguez, a vocalist, who
performed in three performances. My favorite was the seventh
performance of the night where Rodriguez sang Lied Der Mignon by
Franz Shubert. Before Rodriguez began signing she gave the audience
a brief history about the song; saying it was about a young girl who
was separated from her family. As Rodriguez was singing, her voice
filled up the room with sadness and pain: as the piano began to play
faster and louder, the feeling of desperation and frustration filled up
the room. The vocalists really impressed me; I would have never
thought there was so much talent at CSUDH.
Before this concert, I had never seen Opera being performed in
front of me; it was surprisingly very interesting and fascinating to
watch. The emotion a single performance can give off is just incredible,

nothing like the music we have today. It was definitely a new
experience; I am definitely excited to go to the next one!
