Family Strengths Chapter 3
There are many types of families in this world, for example there are Nuclear
Families, Single-Parent Families, Adoptive/Foster Families, etc (3). Because they are different
they happen to have different strengths and weaknesses. Strengths that a family may possess
are Communication; Health; Spirituality; Support; Respect; Unity; Cultural Traditions;
Extended Sense of Family (2). Different families may decide to be more about respect, unity,
and time together while others prefer to focus on communication, support, and cultural
traditions. My family is a Single-Parent Family whose strengths happen to be spirituality,
support, and respect.
Spirituality is one of my families strengths because we manage to 85% of the time
make time for it. We make religion a priority just how in the book it says, The family was
responsible for religious instruction to join in prayer, read scripture and teach the principles
of religion (Strong & Cohen, 2014, p.67). In addition to spirituality one of my families
strengths is support. In my family supporting each other is very important because it keeps the
family together and healthy, as it did in the colonial times. Families have been
caring/providing support for each other ever since the colonial times for example the book
explains how as a social unit, the family reared children and cared for the sick, infirm, and
aged (Strong & Cohen, 2014, p.67).

One of the biggest strengths my family possesses is respect. The children in my
family have a lot of respect for our parents and we show this respect by not contradicting their
word and many more ways. The book points out how even in instances without such
restrictions, in which individuals were free to choose, children rarely went against their
parents wishes (Strong & Cohen, 2014, p.67). In conclusion the ethnic families from the
colonial era and ethnic families from today are very similar due to their strengths and beliefs.
Due to Family strengths being passed down every generation we are able to see how many of
the same strengths that our ancestors possessed we possess now. The only difference from
families in the past and families now is that today we are able to accept strengthening are
families in different areas.
