Do we have a risk taking class?

Executive summary
This report is made with only one sole purpose, to determine if our class is willing to
take risks or not. First of all, we made a survey and posted it in the Facebook group
of our class. We had response from 16 people, 7 men and 9 females. We got all the
information we needed and made some graphs in SPSS. Our class consists of
different individuals with several personalities. In this report we can see that our
class is divided into two groups when it comes to taking risks.

Findings
This part of the report contains the original questions and the answers collected
from the respondents. We also added our own analyses and conclusions.
1. What is your gender?

Male
56%

44%
Female

In total, 16 people have completed in our survey. 44% of them are males and
56% are females.

2. What is your age?

Most of the people who responded are 19 years old. Two of them are 20 and
three other people are a bit older.
3. How risky do you think you are?

Seven respondents say that they are risky, a quarter of them say that they
are not that risky. The others are in between. These results are necessary for
this report but these plain numbers do not say a lot. We wanted to see if there
was a link with the gender of the respondent and the amount of risk that they
take.

We can conclude that there is a link with the gender of the respondent. This
indicates that the male respondents like to take more risk than the female
respondents.
2

4. Why (not)?
The most common answer is that it depends on the situation or that some
people need the adrenaline. We can also see that some of the respondents
are afraid of the consequences and that is a good reason for them not to take
any risks.
5. Do you practice a sport?
11

Yes

No

Almost 70% of our respondents practice a sport. This means that they live a
healthy but the probability for a sports injury is bigger.
6. Do you feel a need for adrenaline?

12

11

10

It surprised us that this graph was the same as the last graph. We wanted to
check if there was a link between the need for adrenaline and the amount of
sports that the respondents practice.

Apparently there is no link between the two variables. So we can conclude

that if you practice a sport, it does not mean that you feel the need for
adrenaline.

7. If you won the lottery, would you rather invest, save or spend your
money?

Invest

Save

Spend

Here we asked our respondents the question if they would rather invest, save
or spend their money if they won the lottery. 70% of them said that they
would invest the money. A fifth of them would save the money and only two
out of sixteen would spend the money. We can conclude that we have a risk
taking class when it comes to financials. They want to make more money by
investing, instead of saving their money.

8. Would you rather be a boss than an employee? Why?

I don't know

Employee

Boss

Most of the respondents want to be their own boss but there is not a lot of
difference with the others. The people who said that they wanted to be their
own boss want to take the lead and to be independent. The respondents who
chose to be an employee, seek certainty in life.
9. Have you ever skipped a class?
We also wanted to talk about certain risks in school so we asked the
respondents if they have ever skipped a class? Every respondent answered
the question and the result was astonishing. 100% of the students has
skipped at least one class. This may not seem normal but it is. The reason for
that is because you also skip a class when you are sick.
10.

Why?

Here we asked the students why they have ever skipped a class. We added
four possible answers and 60% skips a class because the lessons are boring.
Another 50% skips classes when it is sunny outside. 43% skipped because
they were sick and only 6% because they are familiar with the subject.

11.

How many classes do you skip (in one month)?

We also asked how many times the respondents skip classes in one month.
The results were not so monotone anymore. More than 55% of the students
skips 1 to 2 lessons each month. A third of the students skips 3 to 4 classes
each month. And 5% skips 5 lessons, the same percentage that skips more
than 5 classes each month.

Would you invest money in a Kickstarter campaign?

Kickstarter is a website where people can share an idea of a project. The only
problem is that they do not have any money to realize the project. Some
Kickstarter campaigns have known a huge success but some failed miserably.
We asked the respondents if they would invest their money in a campaign
from Kickstarter.

31%

69%

Yes

No

Almost 70% of the respondents would take the risk to support someone with a
Kickstarter campaign. 30% would not, there is always a risk that something
can go wrong.
13.

Would you risk your life for someone else?

This is very difficult question to answer but 44% would risk their own life for
someone elses. It all depends on who the other person is but 56% of the
students would not. The results are very close to each other but we wanted to
know if there is a link with the gender of the respondent.

44%
56%

Yes

No

It clearly shows that the male respondents would put their own lives at stake
more quickly than the female respondents. This will probably be due to how
the society thinks about men.
14.

How often do you gamble (online and in casinos)?

There are also risks in gambling. There is the risk of becoming an addict, the
risk of going bankrupt, .... Here the respondents had to confess how often
they gamble. The answers are divided.

31%
63%

6%

At least once a year

I don't gamble

The majority of the respondents do not gamble but we wanted to see if there
was a link between the gender of the respondents and the people who
gamble.

Almost every male respondent gambles, this is not a surprise because when
you watch football, basketball or any other sport, you get overwhelmed by
9

betting commercials. Most men are more interested in sports, especially

football so it is more likely that they would participate in sports betting. The
female respondents are not that interested in sports so they gamble less.
15.

What kind of betting are you into?

The people who positively answered the previous question, now need to
clarify what kind of gambling they like. We saw in the previous question that
most of the male respondents gamble so we already have an idea what kind
of gambling they are into.

The results are as expected, most of the people are into sports betting.
16.

How many glasses of alcohol do you drink in a week?

Since all our respondents were students, we thought it would be important to

ask them about the amount of alcohol they consume in a week. The answers
were divided.

10

13%
38%

50%

1 to 2

3 to 4

Half of the respondents drink three to four glasses of alcohol in one week, this
is still reasonable. All respondents are students, a lot of them live in a
students residence so the results are not surprising.
17.
Do you take the risk to drive your car when you have drunk
something?
Do you take the risk to drive your car when you have drunk something?. We
hear it on the news every day, a young driver that died in a car accident due
to the alcohol level. We asked our young respondents if they would take the
risk to drive a car after drinking alcoholic beverages.

6%

94%

Yes

No

We can go to sleep with peace of mind because 94% would not take such a
risk.

Conclusion
This study showed us that men think that they are risk takers, this will probably be
due to the image created by our society. The female respondents are rather risk

11

avoiders but there are still some exceptions. Our class is entrepreneurial; they would
rather invest their money than to save it, but the opinions are divided when it comes
to spending their money. Men are a fan of sports betting and women do not bet at
all. If we look more closely to our class does not take too much risk at all, most of
the students just want to feel safe.

Recommendations

We had to question more people in the survey because a target of 16 people

is too small to draw conclusions.
We should have closed the survey, when we were making the graphs, a
couple of respondents started to fill in the survey.
