Description:TheEmergingLeadersintheAmericasProgram(ELAP)scholarshipsprovide
studentsandresearchersfromLatinAmericaandtheCaribbeanwithshorttermexchange
opportunitiesforstudyorresearchatthecollege,undergraduateandgraduatelevels.
NOTE:Thecandidate'sstudiesorresearchmaycommenceasearlyasJuly1,2016butnolater
thanFebruary1,2017.
FundingforELAPscholarshipsismadeavailablebyGlobalAffairsCanadathroughitslegaltitle:
theDepartmentofForeignAffairs,TradeandDevelopment(DFATD).

Guidelines
TheEmergingLeadersintheAmericasProgram(ELAP)scholarshipsarefacilitatedthrough
institutionalcollaborationsandstudentexchangeagreementsbetweenCanadianandLatin
AmericanorCaribbeaninstitutions.Theseagreementsarecreatedbetweencolleges,technical
orvocationalinstitutionsanduniversities.Studentsorresearchers,herebyreferredtoas
"candidates",remainregisteredasfulltimestudentsintheirhomeinstitutionduringthis
exchange.

Canadianpostsecondaryinstitutions
Canadianinstitutionsare:
responsibleforsubmittingapplicationsonbehalfofcandidatesfrominstitutionsinLatin
AmericaandtheCaribbeanand
encouragedtopromotethisscholarshipopportunitytofacultyandstaffmembers,aswell
astopartnerinstitutionsinLatinAmericaandtheCaribbean.
Canadianinstitutionswithsuccessfulcandidates:
shouldidentifyasinglepersonresponsiblefortheadministrationofthecontribution
agreementandanotherpersonwithdelegatedsigningauthorityand
willreceivecontributionfundingfromtheDepartmentofForeignAffairs,Tradeand
Development(DFATD)todisburseasscholarshipstorecipients.

NonCanadiancandidates
Candidatesinterestedinthisscholarshipprogramshouldcontacttheirhomeinstitutionto:
maketheirinterestknown
findoutifthereisanexistinginstitutionalcollaborationorexchangeagreementwitha
Canadianinstitutionand
requestinformationabouttheapplicationprocessandselectioncriteriaspecifictothe
Canadianinstitution.

followtheproceduresasoutlinedbyImmigration,RefugeesandCitizenshipCanada
(generallyastudypermitisrequiredforcourseworkandaworkpermitisrequiredfor
research)and
contactalumnioftheprogramthroughtheirhomeinstitutionforadviceandalocal
perspectiveonthescholarshipexperience.

NonCanadianinstitutions
NonCanadianinstitutionsareencouragedto:
communicatewithpartnerinstitutionsinCanadatoconfirmorexploreinstitutional
collaborationsandstudentexchangeagreements
promotethisscholarshipopportunitythroughtheirinternationaloffices
identifystrongacademiccandidateswhomeettheadmissionrequirementsforthe
Canadianpartnerinstitutionand
providethecandidates'namestotheCanadianpartnerinstitution,whichisresponsiblefor
submittingthescholarshipapplications.
