Competency: L-3: Pediatric Pain Management

Subcategory: L-3-1: Demonstrate knowledge and ability to assess
pediatric client for pain considering: age, behaviours, cultural
influence, location and intensity, physiological and psychological
factors, previous medication and effectiveness, subjective and
objective data
One significant learning experience in this course related to the
chosen CLPNA competency is learning about the different ways
that children demonstrate pain as well as the factors that can
influence how children expresses pain, such as age or culture. An
example is watching for grimacing or a quivering chin in infants,
or using the "Faces Pain Scale" in children over three.
I learned the different way to determine if a child might be in pain,
and ways to assess the level of pain if they are of age or able to.
This is meaningful as it is especially hard for to children to
express feelings of pain, therefore, we as nurses must be aware of
the signs in order to ensure we can help our patients and make
sure that they aren't suffering. It is important to be aware of the
different tools available to us as well, such as the faces pain scale,
but it is also important to know signs to look for that may indicate
pain, such as body language, or body posture. We must make
ourselves aware of cultural influences of pain in our patients as
different cultures can express pain in different ways.
Using the proficiency categories, I believe I would be in the "fair"
category. In order to achieve this I have studied a lot and I am
now aware of the different signs of pain in children, as well as
what resources there is available to me and how to use them.
However, I haven't been able to use my knowledge in a real life
setting yet, and therefore I can't be "excellent" or "good" until I
acquire more experience in my skills in a real life setting. The
more experience I attain, the better I will be able to recognize pain.

DESCRIBE H OW Y OU
WILL APPLY THIS
LEARNING IN Y OUR
CURRENT AND FUTURE
NURSING P RACTICE.

I will apply what I have learned in my current and future practice

by always being aware of not only what my patients vocalize in
regards to pain, but also of my patients facial expressions,
changes in behaviours, posture, lack of play, or any other sign that
my patient may be in pain. I will always keep in mind that my
patients culture can have an affect on how pain is expressed. And
lastly, I will make sure to report the interventions implemented,
and whether or not they were effective, in order to ensure I am
aware and to make others aware of what is or is not the most
effective intervention for the patients, in order to provide the best
care possible.
