concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis

i. Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas,
concepts, and information into broader categories; include formatting (e.g.,
headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to
aiding comprehension. (CCSS: W.8.2a)
ii. Develop the topic with relevant, well-chosen facts, definitions, concrete
details, quotations, or other information and examples. (CCSS: W.8.2b)
iii. Use appropriate and varied transitions to create cohesion and clarify the
relationships among ideas and concepts. (CCSS: W.8.2c)
iv. Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or

In order to have journal responses be fresh and accurate, as a class, go over
what each station did in the activities. Be sure to ask what students took
away from those tasks. Ask how the tasks were beneficial or needed
improvement. Ask if they learned anything.

Now ask students to write a reflection on (write these on the board so they
can reference them)
-How improving my empathetic skills have altered my reading of Out of the
Dust. Give one example from the text.
-How did the activities from yesterday alter where I want my project to go.
Give specific examples. Elaborate on how they changed your thinking.
Elaborate on why they changed your thinking.
-Reflect on how you want to improve as an empathetic person.

Presentation:

At this point, ask each cluster to discuss their answers for all three of these
questions. Remind students that they all need to contribute to the discussion.
They also need to allow others to contribute to the discussion.

Materials

After discussion, allow students to have the remaining time to work on their
final projects.
(33 minutes)
In the last 2 minutes of class, ask students to share out how much more time
they will need to complete this project. Ask if any of them are making
significant changes after todays discussion? Tell them that you would like
to see empathetic skills work their way into the assignment.
