Nov 6, 1860 President Abraham Lincoln is elected president of the United States.
Dec 20, 1860 South Carolina succeeds from the Union.
Jan 9, 1861 Mississippi succeeds from the Union.
Jan 10, 1861 Florida succeeds from the Union.
Jan 19, 1861 Alabama succeeds from the Union.
Jan 19, 1861 Georgia succeeds from the Union.
Jan 26, 1861 Louisiana succeeds from the Union.
Feb 1, 1861 Texas succeeds from the Union.
Feb 9, 1861 Confederate States of America is formed and Jefferson Davis is
president.
April 12-14, 1861 Fort Sumter, the first shots of the Civil War were fired ending in
the first federally captured site by the Rebels.
April 17, 1861 Virginia succeeds from the Union.
April 20, 1861 Robert E. Lee goes back to his Virginia home and is offered a job as
the general of the Virginia forces. He accepts.
May 6, 1861 Arkansas succeeds from the Union.
May 20, 1861 North Carolina succeeds from the Union.
Jun 8, 1861 Tennessee succeeds from the Union.
Jul 21, 1861 First battle of Bull Run, Confederate Victory.
March 8-9, 1862 Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack. Changes the way naval
warfare is fought.
April 6-7, 1862 Battle of Shiloh, Union Victory. More than 23,000 troops killed or
wounded on both sides.
April 24, 1862 The greatest Confederate port is captured by 17 Union ships.
Jun 25 Jul 1, 1862 The Seven Days, Confederate Victory.
Aug 29-30, 1862 The second battle of Bull Run ends in a Confederate Victory
sending the Union army back to Washington D.C.
Sept 17, 1862 Antietam (Sharpsburg) ends in a Union Victory and stops the
Confederate march up North. 26,000 men are killed, missing or wounded on both
sides making this the deadliest day in all of United States history.
Sept 22, 1862 President Lincoln signs the Emancipation Proclamation, which frees
all slaves.

Dec 13, 1862 Fredericksburg ends in a Confederate Victory. Union losses 12,653
men and the Confederates lose 5,309.
Jan 1, 1863 President Lincoln signs the final Emancipation Proclamation which
frees all slaves in Confederate held territory and encourages blacks to join the Union
Army.
Mar 3, 1863 Congress put a draft that affecting male citizens age 20 45 but they
could be exempt if they payed $300.
May 1-4, 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville, Confederate Victory. Confederate General
Stone Wall Jackson gets killed by friendly fire. Union loses 17,000 troops and the
Confederates lose 10,000.
Jul 1-3, 1863 Gettysburg, Union Victory. (Turning Point) Stops the momentum of
the Confederate Army for the rest of the war.
Jul 4, 1863 Vicksburg surrenders to Union General Grant, which separates the
Confederate from the West allies.
Nov 19, 1863 President Lincoln gives the Gettysburg Address starts the National
Cemetery.
Mar 9, 1864 President Lincoln makes General Grant the commander of all Armies
of the Union.
Jun 3, 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor, Confederate Victory.
Sept 2, 1864 Atlanta is captured by Shermans Army.
Nov 8, 1864 Lincoln is re-elected President of the United States.
Nov 15, 1864 Sherman begins his march to the Sea through Georgia.
Dec 21, 1864 Sherman reaches Savannah leaving behind a 300 mile trail of
destruction.
Jan 31, 1865 U.S. Congress approves the 13 th amendment which abolishes slavery.
Feb 3, 1865 Lincoln tries peace talks with the South and has them in Hampton
Roads. They fail.
April 9, 1865 General Lee surrenders to the Union Army in Appomattox Court
House in Virginia.
April 14, 1865 Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilks Booth in a theater in Virginia.
