A Performance Appraisal Rating must satisfy the receiver……

A fundamental quality of a good appraisal system is that an appraisal finding or


rating will never come as a surprise to the person concerned:

1. This obviously means that the appraisal process is transparent with well-defined
parameters, has flexibility to accommodate non-serious shortcomings so long as
Key Result Areas have been met, allows for patient hearing on both sides, and
allows for arriving at a fair consensus, good or bad.
2. The problem most times is that while the process is well-defined, the process
owners and implementers have 'no time' to see it through the defined way and
therefore the process may be hurried through to meet a deadline.
3. People with a clear track record may not suffer but newer employees and
'borderline' cases may tend to get treated unfairly.
