ThefirststepuptheladderfromthebarehullwastheCurrituck,whichfeaturedalarge
sideconsoleandtwothwartseats.Thewoodencomponentsweremadefrom
mahoganyandvarnished.Theconsoleextendedalmostthefullwidthoftheboatand
placedthewheelonthecenterline.Mechanicalsteeringwasstandard.

Oneoftheearliestmodelsavailableinthe16foothull,theNauset(pronounced
"NAWsit")featuredanelaboratemahoganycenterconsole.The1970Whalercatalog

byfewandexceededbynone.Easyforonemantohaulandlaunchwitha
trailer,theyopentotheirownersallwaterwaysinthecountryfrom
sprucefringedcrystallakesintheNorthtoshallow,bonefishflatsand
oceanreefsintheFloridaKeysfromMassachusettsbluefishgroundsin
theriptidesoffMartha'sVineyeartothesalmonfisheryandcruising
paradiseofthefarNorthwestandbesidesallthistheyareconstructed
withasoliduncompromisingqualitynormallyexpectedonlyoncustom
builtyachts."

lengthy,complexgrammarlikethat.Compoundsentenceswerecommonsemicolons
werepepperedallacrossthecataloglengthydependentclauseswerethenorm.Now
Whalerlikeeveryoneelsetellstheirstoryinsimplesentencesandfragmentslike
this:"Sothere'slessweight,lowercost."Forme,Iliketheoldlanguage.Itreallysold
youtheboatandtheideabehindit.[OKAY,BACKTOTHEBOATS]
TheNausetaddedlights,fixedpilotseat,consoleandwindshield,consolefrontseat,
mechanicalsteering,andsingleleverenginecontrolstothebaseboat.In1970thelist
pricewas$1,995,a$695premiumoverthebarehull.

Thisparticularboatwaspurchasedoriginallyasa1971bare16fthull.The
ownerfabricatedthemahoganyinterior,anexactcopyoftheNauset.Therub
rail,stainlesswheel,and"Whaler"logowereupdatedin1984.Thatlittle7.5
Hpkickerisjustboltedonfor1988seatrialsastheboatwasabouttobe
soldfor$5,500.Thebuyergota"mint"conditionWhaler.Theboatlooksso
goodinthisphotothatI'mreadytowriteacheckforit!

vehicle"accordingtothecatalog.Fora$1070premiumoverthebarehull,yougot
lights,reversiblepilotseatwithcabinets,bowplatform,consoleandwindshield,
mechanicalsteering,singleleverenginecontrol,stainlessbowrails,bowchock,fire
extinguisher,andacompass,bringingthetotalto$2,370in1970dollars.Itoutlivedits
twosistersbyacoupleofyears.

WhentheCohassetwasintroduced,itmarkedthefirstproductionuseofamolded
centerconsoleintheWhalerline.(TheOutrage21hadone,too.)In1974,thedesign
ofthecenterconsolechangeandtheboatbecametheMontauk.TheMONTAUKwas
popularthenandeversince,asitisstillinproduction,morethan25yearslater.Itwas
theprototypeofthenowubiquitouscenterconsolefiberglassfishingboat,anditisstill
probablythebestinitssize.

TheNewportwasamodelintendedtopleaseeveryone,fisherman,skier,bowrider.It
stayedinproductionfor15years,soitmusthavehaditsfans.Asideconsolewith
windscreen,mechanicalwheelsteeringandstainlessgrabrailwasattendedbya
reversiblepilotseatwithupholsteredbackrest.Inthebowcompartmentanother
windshieldprotectedpassengerswhorodeinlow,contouredbucketseats.Forskiinga
towpylonwasavailableforfishingarearcastingplatformcouldbeadded.
