My Teaching Philosophy

It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and
knowledge. -Albert Einstein. This quote can describe any educator who is determined to
encourage his or her students in ways that nobody else can do. The role of a teacher in my
eyes is to inspire students as their role model, create a comfortable learning environment, and
to ultimately push them to think outside of the box. Pushing students to think outside of the
box will encourage creativity that is not used in other classrooms. Without having this figure in
front of the classroom, the students will not grow and achieve all that they can.
The subject of art is filled with unlimited imagination and having the ability to create
and appreciate visual aesthetics is so important. I want to create a classroom where my
students can relate their artwork to their interests and have flexibility in my lesson plans to
assist all of my students. As a learner, I enjoyed being able to take simple instructions from my
teacher and then expand in my own creative ways. Whether it was the way I presented my
forms or which mediums I would use, simple instructions give the student the freedom to
interpret it in their own way. It is significant to enhance critical thinking in art education and a
project that reinforces student problem solving. The projects should push the students to use
their imagination and will be a positive learning experience. I am familiar with the STEAM
program and had an experience at a Professional Developing School; so allowing art to
correspond to other subject fields is necessary for student development.
As a future educator, my main ideas would reflect the inspirational teachers that I have
had in the past. The one aspect that I will include in my future classroom is building
relationships and making the classroom a community. I strongly believe that a classroom
environment is developed mainly by the teacher but then is reinforced by the community that
is built in that classroom. Having all students work together and form relationships among one
another can ultimately enhance the learning process. I would also incorporate group lessons
and projects, that include hands-on activities, can include all students and they can work off of
each others thoughts and techniques. Giving the students the freedom of being the teacher in
some lessons can expand both the knowledge of the teacher and the other students. The
cooperative learning environment will enhance all skills. Creating a community in a classroom
will allow the inclusion of every individual and can enhance the learning environment. Having a
classroom community also allows the student to develop both independent and interdependent
skills, growing into a strong learning community. It is essential for all teachers to consider their
classroom communities, in order to allow growth socially and cognitively with each individual
student.
As an art teacher, I want to incorporate projects that will allow the students to explore
all mediums. As a learner, I enjoyed being able to explore all aspects of the art field, with
ceramics, painting, drawing, photography, textiles design and even projects that are computer
based. Each student has unique interests and giving them the opportunity to expand on their
idea will allow them to be imaginative. Educational freedom is key to success in the art field,
after the basic foundation is taught. As my goal is to be the best educator and person I can, I

believe I can achieve this goal with my determined attitude, passion for teaching, and
motivation to be more than a teacher to my students. It is also important to be a lifelong
learner so that I can constantly improve as a teacher for my students.
Anything is possible with art, and that is why I am so attracted towards this subject
field. I had no idea of this until my high school teacher had pushed me to be creatively
engaged and I believe that with the help of any individual in your surroundings, you can
incorporate your ideas into anything you want. All of my students will have the capability to
succeed through their original creativity and receive positive feedback from their peers and
myself. That is beauty of art there is no boundaries, as you can take it wherever you want
because in art anything is possible.
