Social Injustice Issues due to Global Warming
Global Warming is the increase of Earth's average surface temperature due to greenhouse
gases, which is the release of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels (to make gasoline) or from
deforestation (burning down trees). By examining Antarctica and parts of Africa it is evident that
greenhouse gases and fossil fuels are destroying Earth. Earth is getting destroyed by humans and
to think narrower it is hurting specific countries and regions by destroying their crops, animals,
plants and so on. The idea of greenhouse gases is to keep our planet warm enough for it to be
livable. Articles and media explain the horrific effects that global warming has on humans,
animals, and plants. By examining Antarctica and parts of Africa it is evident that greenhouse
gases and fossil fuels are destroying Earth. Everyone around the globe is effected by it one way
or another, but there are places such as countries in Africa or continent of Antarctica that people
suffer the consequences of the most and worst things that global warming causes to happen.
Locations in Africa are in a drought and have been for years because desserts are expanding and
sources of water is shrinking. Humans caused the issue however they have to pay a cost by the
form of the ground people live on is getting destroyed.
One-way people can see how global warming is harming Earth is by the examination of
the changing in landscapes in Antarctica. Ice bergs in Antarctica are melting and causing animals
such as polar bears and other animals that have adapted to the cold for centuries now to die. Even

Markari-Davoodian 2
though people dont live there as they do in other places but their is people that travel there and
worth. In the case of animals and structure of Earth, if ice bergs melt they will kill
animals(extinction) it will also destruct the entire structure of the global which will then cause
changes to other countries to then eventually kill those people. In the article The Future of
Antarctica's Surface Winds Simulated by a Highresolution Global Climate Model: 2. Drivers of
21stcentury Changes by Bintanja R, C Severijns, R Haarsma, and W Hazeleger., the authors
said Changes in the surface winds over Antarcticas slopes can thus be attributed mainly to
changes in the synoptic forcing (large-scale pressure gradient) (Bintanja, Severijns, Haarsma,
and Hazeleger, 1). The authors are stating that the levels of the wind pressure are lessening
meaning that the pressure for the wind to control the landscape of keeping snow and ice, is little
by little losing grip. As a result, it will effect the melting of ice bergs and glaciers causing
dysfunction which will lead to the death of animals. This is a social justice issue because by
people causing global warming it effects people in communities such as Antarctica by killing off
the food supplies to the people that live there such as fish. Due to the climate changes, where the
climate is getting hotter and hotter, the arctic melt which then kills of the arctic animals because
without the land to walk on polar bears are bound to go into extinction. In addition to landscape,
food is another main issue that is being impacted by global warming.
Growing crops and food is one of the most important things that must be done for
survival purpose. Due to Global Warming, even the idea growing crops is becoming a worrying
topic. Climate changes and geographic shifting effect crop production. The article The
Economic Impact of Climate Change on Kenyan Crop Agriculture: A Ricardian Approach by
Jane Kabubo-Mariara and Fredrick K Karanja, the authors talk about how a country by the name

Markari-Davoodian 3
of Kenya in Africa is in crisis because due to weather and climate changes, crops are being
destroyed creating starvation. The researcher on this case are predicting from global circulation
models it is confirmed that global warming will have an impact on crop revenue in Kenya. The
authors said, The highest damages from climate change are predicted to be in the agricultural
sector in sub-Saharan Africa because the region already endures high heat and low precipitation
(Kurukulasuriya and Mendelsohn, 2006) (Kabubo-Mariara and Karanja, 320). The authors are
stating that the damage that s being done to the climate mainly effects agriculture and production
of food to feed the people. This is a social justice issue because people are starving around the
world in places like Kenya where because of climate change people lose their crops which leads
to less found and rise in death. People, especially in third world countries such as Kenya, have a
primary fear and worry which is starvation, they live in a drought which means no water or food.
People are dying due to starvation, it is social injustice because when others humans use
excessive amount of gas and oil, it back fires and brigs about drought and climate changes. The
social injustice issues are being recognized in many forms such as the media of our world.
Media, in the form of news is always informing people the horrible living conditions in
Africa especially Kenya for the reasons of water and food shortage. In a media of BBC news
report in 2011, a reporter said, At least 14 people have died in Kenyas north-western Turkana
region The UN says more than four million Kenyans are threatened by starvation in the
regions worst drought in 60 years. People all around the world are slowly experiencing
starvation, places like Turkana, Kenya and Kenya in general is experiencing it much sooner and
quicker than other places. Conditions are getting worse to the point that it is spreading to many
more countries such as California. California just like Kenya and places in Africa is in a drought.

Markari-Davoodian 4
Californians have to know save more water than before just to get by. In an article from CA.gov
an article named State Water Project Allocation Increased, But the Drought is Not Over was
written by an anonymous author on March 18, 2016 that said, California also experienced
record warmth during this time 2014 and 2015 were, respectively, the warmest and secondwarmest years in 121 years of statewide average temperature records. Life all around the world
is changing and as far as the environment is concerned it is changing for the worst.
Just as starvation is increasing due to global warming, the environment is changing all
over the world. Weather and climates are aggressively changing in places like in Africa that have
higher temperatures causing drought or places such as New York and Chicago that are -12
degrees Fahrenheit and -28 degrees Fahrenheit. Climates are changing and when hot areas and
cold areas pass their wind and climates, natural disasters are created known as earthquakes. In
the article Climate Change and Africa by Paul Collier, Gordon Conway, and Tony Venables, the
authors talked about the impact of climate change in Africa is likely to be severed because of
direct effects such as droughts and crops destruction. Direct effects vary widely across the
continent, with some areas such as Madagascar, Somalia, Kenya and so on in the Eastern region)
predicted to get wetter, but much of southern Africa (such as Angola, Namibia and so on)
becoming drier and hotter. What we can be sure of is that global warming affects their
outcomes, increasing the incidence and severity of the droughts, floods and other extreme
weather events that they produce (Collier,Conway, and Venables, 339). The authors are
explaining that with global warming as the enemy, it is defeating the human population, more so
speaking about Madagascar, Kenya, Angola and so on. It is changing the structure of stable
weather and creating droughts and floods, which they are polar opposites. Social injustice is seen

Markari-Davoodian 5
because due to greenhouse gases the heat that gets trapped in the atmosphere causes climate
changes which hurt the lands and humans. It all starts from climate, if climate is an unstable
factor in a community then it leads to ruining crops, ruined crops leads to starvation for animals
and humans, starvation leads to death, and death leads to extinction of animals and humanity.
In the book Woman Warriors by Maxine Hong Kingston in the section called No Name

Woman the belief that culture has about cheating on someone and a woman getting pregnant by
a stranger is not right. In the story people get together and destroy the familys home and land.
Globally speaking we as people living in this Earth are destroying our home(Earth) but the only
difference is the story explains the destruction due to cultural beliefs and we as humans are
destroying Earth because of gases people use on a daily basis. In the story the author said, At
first they threw mud and rocks at the house. Then they threw eggs and began slaughtering
(Kingston,4). The Chinese culture in their community believed the girl that got pregnant from a
man that was not her husband was a big sin, and she must be disowned. They destroyed their
house to prove a point that what she did was wrong. Amongst human beings in Earth, we are
destroying our home without meaning harm, it is for resources such as oil and gas we need. But
destruction is still destruction. Just like how the family could have not ruined the familys home,
we can also not destroy our home, by doing things to better and save the environment and Earth.
Humans have a crisis on their hands that if people dont do something productive to save
Earth then things will end up very wrong. Global Warming is defined as the increase of Earth's
average surface temperature due to greenhouse gases, which is the release of carbon dioxide
from fossil fuels (to make gasoline) or from deforestation (burning down trees). The analysis
done on Antarctica and parts of Africa such as Kenya, Turkana and so on, the audience see that it

Markari-Davoodian 6
is evident that greenhouse gases and fossil fuels are destroying Earth. Humans are destroying
Earth little by little for decades now. To think in-depth, it is hurting specific countries and
regions by destroying their crops, animals, plants and so on. Bringing awareness to this very
serious issue (a global issue) is much needed but also to bring social justice to the countries in
the content of Africa such as Kenya, Madagascar, Angola and so forth as well as the continent of
Antarctica. People are experiencing horrific life changes that will leads to a dead end (no pun
intended). Locations in Africa such as Turkana, Kenya are in a drought and have been for years
because desserts are expanding and sources of water are shrinking. Crops dont grow as fast or as
often because climates are changing which prevent the production of food. Ice bergs are melting
which ruin the cycle and systematic form of a region in this specific case Antarctica. People need
to be informed and help as much as they can, by driving cars that are hybrid so we can save gas.
We can also create and replace the factory gas usage to electricity rather than toxic gases.
