Petrol Engine

Petrol Engine is an internal combustion engine. It is a heat engine. It derives heat energy from
combustion of fuel and converts that energy into mechanical work.
Petrol Engines are of two types :
1. Two Stroke Petrol Engines
2. Four Stroke Petrol Engines

In Two Stroke Petrol Engines, one power stroke is obtained in each complete
revolution of the crankshaft; whereas in Four Stroke Petrol Engines one power stroke
is obtained for every two revolutions of the crankshaft.
The operation of a Four Stroke Petrol Engine consists of the following strokes:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Compression stroke
Power stroke
Expansion stroke
Exhaust stroke

In Two Stroke Petrol Engines there are only two strokes instead of four strokes. Here
the compression and power stroke are combined into a single stroke and similarly
expansion and exhaust stroke are combined into one single stroke.
There is wastage of fuel in Two Stroke Petrol Engines because a part of fuel-air
mixture escapes into the atmosphere unburnt, along with the exhaust gases.
