NEW YORK CITY DEMS PERPETUATE OPIOID OVERDOSES

Assembly Democrat leadership refuses to address heroin crisis

Following a press conference announcing the findings of the Senate Joint Task Force on
Heroin and Opioid Addiction, Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C,I-Deerpark) today urged
Assembly Democrats to follow the Senates lead and pass legislation to combat the states deadly
heroin and opioid addiction crisis. Assemblyman Richard Gottfried (D-Manhattan), Chair of the
Assemblys Health Committee, recently argued against any further legislative action on the
heroin and opioid addiction crisis this year.
The Assembly Democrats are the only ones in Albany who have refused to address the
heroin crisis ravaging our state, Brabenec said. More people now die from drug overdoses
nationwide than from traffic accidents. Each day that the Assembly stands idly by is another day
that a teenager shoots up for the first time, a child is left orphaned and a senior is victimized to
fund an addicts dependence. I stand with Sen. Bonacic and the Senate Republicans, who
propose severe punishments for those who sell this poison to our children.
