The Year in Review

Natalye Gividen
Over the course of the school year, there has been a lot of talk about our
new principal, Mr. Green. Everyone agrees that having a change in
principals has brought its fair share of changes to the school. In general,
the changes have impacted the school positively. Coming to school each
morning to be greeted with morning announcements that highlight how
much potential each student holds, has given many students a better
outlook on how they want to proceed with the school day. I interviewed
Mr. Green to gain his perspective on his first year as principal.
When asked about Central in general, Mr. Green responded with great
pride, "I believe that Central High School is the best kept secret
in Louisville Kentucky." Then he proceeded to talk about all of the
different things he noticed in our student body. For someone who is not
very old, Mr. Green admitted that he had believed manners,
responsibility, and motivation had died off, and that these were no
longer attributes of the majority of teenagers today. But when he takes
the three R's (Respect, Responsibility and Right on Time) into
consideration, he feels that the students have shown him that teenagers
today are still driven to succeed, and are still willing to take responsibility for their actions. More importantly, the
students have shown him that Central is a school that continues to produce valuable members of society.
While there have been many changes discussed and put in action this year, there are many more to come. Over the
summer, we should expect the removal of the Law CTE magnet, and a change in teachers for the Sports Marketing
magnet. Aside from magnet changes, Mr. Green hopes to bring more focus to academics next school year. He says
"The faculty will know every kid who is struggling by name; we will not let them be forgotten and left behind."
Mr. Green has also been on board for the addition of a Montessori program to be added to our school. He is excited to
put this program in place, because it would focus more on academics, while also applying the skills from ones magnet to
help students obtain the goal of their future career. When I mentioned that I struggled to see how that would work
without isolating the Montessori students, he replied, "There would be no isolation. The Montessori students would be
just as much a part of Central High School as regular magnet students.
Mr. Green reminds us daily of the goal to rebrand Central as the premier school in town. There has been a lot of
questions as to what benefit to the students the rebranding of Central would be, considering the amount of pride each
individual student and faculty member already has in our great school. I asked if this 'rebranding ' is meant to be more
for the general public and their image of Central, or if it was actually meant to be something for the students. Mr. Green
responded, "The rebranding of Central is for the public, yes. But I also want every individual who has ever been a part of
this school to recognize and truly believe that Central is the best school in town, and that Central equips students with
the skills needed to be successful in life."
Mr. Green has faced internal and external challenges as a part of his first year as principal, but he has overcome every
single one of them perfectly. Mr. Green has impacted the school greatly during this first year, and as students we look
forward to seeing the long term impact he will make. Mr. Green has worked so hard this school year to better our image
and students, that I asked about his summer plans and whether he was going to get a break. He responded, "This
summer, I will be working on writing my dissertation, and completing my doctorate." Even in the summer time, when
the students are on break, our principal is working to become better at what he does, so that we, as a school, will have
only the best.

Yard Signs Help with Rebranding of Central

TLauriyon Milliken

I recently had the opportunity to interview Ms. King, our Magnet

Coordinator, about the selection process for next years
freshman class. She explained that there is a two-step
application process for students who want to come to Central.
In October, the student does an online application, and then the
second step is to do the Central High School paper application
by January the eighth. Once that is complete, they have a month
to get all of their credentials in. Our requirements are a 2.5 GPA;
we also look at behavior, testing; we look at recommendations,
and we look at attendance. They have to gather all of that stuff
and turn in, and then the selections are made by a committee.
The committee is generally made up of one person from each
department in the school. For example, well have an English
representative, a Math representative, and a Magnet
representative, and so on, for a total of 11 or 12 people on the
committee. Each student has their own file, and the files are
reviewed individually by every person on the committee. For a
student to be accepted, six of the committee members must
approve of the candidate.
This is not too different than in past years. Previously, the committee was smaller and did not necessarily represent all of
the academic departments. Now we have a policy to be inclusive, and have someone from each department represent
their department. The process itself is very time consuming and tedious, and it lasts pretty much the whole year. Im in
the process of trying to make it all electronic so that teachers can do it from home or in their own classrooms. Right
now, they have to come down to my office, and view the files at their leisure because the process hasnt totally come
together yet. The committee members look through paper files while they carefully consider every aspect of the
candidate. This process takes a long time because we really look at everything: recommendations, test score, behavior
reports, and attendance.
This year, every student who was accepted into the CHS class of 2020 got a yard sign. Central has a new marketing
committee to help rebrand CHS, and they came up with the idea. The signs have a two-fold benefit. It gets Central High
Schools name out there in the public all over Jefferson County, because we do get kids from all over the county. For
example, when a neighbor or passing car sees the sign, they say, Oh, that person goes to Central High School. The
signs get the schools name out there. The second thing is it makes students feel welcomed when they come home from
school and see a CHS sign in their yard. So far, all of the students we have been accepted who put CHS as their first
choice, already have signs. The names of all the kids who listed us as their second choice and recently found out they
didnt get accepted at their first choice, have just become available for us to review, and then the ones we accept will
get their signs, and so on through the districts high school application process. To get the signs inserted in the yards, I
divided acceptances into zip codes. Teachers and administrators who live nearby placed each sign.
Its been really positive for the incoming students to be recognized, and for members of the Central community to be
able to put names to faces. Parents and the students feel welcomed and honored that someone from central thought
enough of them to come and put a yard sign up in their yard. Its a great way to rebrand Central from the best kept
secret in town, and let the city know how awesome we really are.

Central's New Innovation

Denzel Daprimont
Central has always been a
home to magnets and career
building classes. Weve had magnets
from Pharmacy to Veterinary, and
partnerships with Papa Johns, Fifth
Third Bank and UofL Law School. But
since change is inevitable, after
adopting a new principal for Central
High, we will also adopt a new

along with him. That magnet is the
Innovation Magnet, and it is going to be led by Mr. Cannaday of the current Computer magnet,
and Mr. Brown from the History department (and inspired photographer). The two have
combined their love for technology and the inspiration of Mr. Gilbert's Robotics club to come up
with a magnet that is even better than Technology. They got the inspiration from visiting a 21st
century Trade Convention in Louisville. 20th century trades, like laying carpeting and
blacksmithing, arent going to be as valuable as coding or machine making in this era. It is a huge
step forward to teach 21st century skills to CHS students to better their chances to adapt and
succeed in life after high school.
I asked the two new leaders of the Innovation Magnet, Brown and Canaday, to tell me
more about the new magnet. Mr. Cannaday said, "For years and years the Technology Magnet
has been computers, screens, printers and all that. Well, thats gonna change. We're going away
from that and we're moving into innovation." He stated that the students in the magnet would
be using their imagination and creativity 24/7. They are also going to be working with machines
and software that helps them express that creativity.
Verizon provided the grant to start the new Innovation Magnet, and Central is hopeful to
create a partnership with the UofL Speed School. While the skills they learn will be centered in
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, the students will be exposed to a way of learning
that isn't teaching them to regurgitate book knowledge for one specific problem. They're going
to learn how to use their brains, be creative and imaginative, INNOVATIVE.
The Innovation Magnet will not be contained in a single room. Instead, the new magnet
will be spread throughout the building. One of the places for creativity and inspiration (they
called it a MakerSpace and it seems to be exactly that a place to make things. See the example
picture below.) is going to be located where the 5/3 Bank Magnet currently stands in 222A.
However, the Innovation Magnet itself will be located in 213B.

Mr.Brown then introduced me to the "Sparkfun Inventors Kit." Some of the main
components of that kit are called Ardwinos and Cherry Pies.. They are small computers that
allow code to be written that will put technology into motion like robots. There also have
several 3D printers which will allow students to produce their own parts. This is even compatible
with our Medical Magnet. For example, this technology has made it possible for doctors to take
digital images of ones heart, create a 3D figure, and make better decisions about how to proceed
with treatment. In our magnet, they could study pieces of the body part by part, printing out
organs to get an in depth view of the human body, eventually making them move with codes that
the students create. The whole point of this magnet is to get the students to be creative and
prepare them for job opportunities of the 21st century.
The unveiling of this magnet wouldnt happen until October 2017, but with all that this
magnet is promising, it sounds worth the wait!

Robotics Club
Darion Moore
Did you know that Central has a robotics club? They meet every Thursday after school and
anyone is allowed to join them. They are currently working on a new bot that has some cool
features. The new bot can say over 100 phrases and walk up and down the halls unlike any
previous bot. Using a cell phone app, the robot can see someone and mimic their movement. It
also obeys commands like walk and turn. His name is Canaday Bot.
The club competes in the Vex Robotics League. Each year, to promote STEM activity, a game
challenge is given. School Robotics Clubs build a robot to play the game. The winner is the bot
who scores the most points. Central made it to the state finals. The bot they used on the
basketball challenge is named Duff Bot, after the former assistant principal, Ms. Duff. They also
have an arm bot, named Robertson Bot. It draws with amazing quality. It is manipulated
through an app that can run on a phone or tablet. Next year, the club plans to have a total of
seven bots as the program expands next year.
The Robotics Club started with a $1000 grant from NASA. With that they built Duff Bot, a nerf
ball throwing robot. A $20,000 grant from Verizon allowed them to expand the program; next
year the program will be sponsored by the University of Louisvilles Speed School. Mr. Gilbert
started the program because coding not was being taught at Central. He explained, Coding is
everywhere: your car, your phone, your ATM card; all have coding. Learning to write and
manipulate code makes you a marketable prospective employee. Robotics is a practical
application of coding. Coding is used to tell the robots what to do.
If you are interested in robotics, Mr. Gilberts room is in the English wing of the school, room
328. There you will find a small MakerSpace with tools and lots of robotic parts. You are
welcome to drop by, have a look, and find out more from him. The bots are fun to look at even
if you dont join the club. Hopefully some of you will bring your creative talents to the robotics
club next year.

Imagination does not

Over the past year, our school has been looking into
bringing Montessori education in as an alternative. We are aiming
become great until
for students to being participating in a Montessori Magnet at

child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences
in the environment.
According to Baize, one of the teachers on the committee
Maria Montessori
working to create this new magnet, Montessori education is
centered around the students interests and needs. The teachers
goal is to prepare the learning atmosphere and serve as mentors for motivated students. Teachers would serve
as guides instead of lecturers - giving students individual attention with goals targeted to their needs. This
method of teaching would not waste the time of students who already understand the subject matter while
also preventing the students who dont understand from missing out on the information they need to succeed.
Students would likely be taught by Mr. Shaw, Mr. Davis, Ms. Walsh, Mrs. Lawson, and Mr. Baize on a
schedule with longer class periods. The core content for of all the subject areas would be blended in with one
another, while still maintaining the focus of a task for students to complete. An example Baize provided was
that History would blend together with English easily and efficiently. Students would be taught the historical
context needed to fully understand the literature being read. At the same time, additional materials would
provide imagery to time periods being studied.
Bringing Montessori education to Central is going to be a long process, beginning with sending in an
application to the JCPS Board of Education to either approve or deny the program. If approved, during its first
year there would only be freshman and the program would not be extended to students already participating
in one of our schools existing magnet programs. At first, Central would be looking to accept students who had
already
participated
in
a Montessori program
during
Middle School, although there is
potential for other students to be
accepted. The best qualified
student is the student who "wants
to learn and be in charge of their
learning,"
according
to Baize.
Ultimately, bringing
Montessori education to our
school would mean better
preparing students for life.

Introducing Ms. Pitts

DeAsia Beard

This year, Central welcomed several new teachers to the staff. Some of them have
been teachers for years; for others, its their first year of teaching. One of the first
year teachers our school gained is Ms. Samantha Pitts. She is the new Health and
PE teacher, and last week I had the privilege of sitting down and getting to know a
little bit about her.
Ms. Pitts is twenty-three years old. The Indiana born teacher moved across the
bridge to attend the University of Louisville to earn degrees in Health and
Education. Growing up, she enjoyed sports a lot. Physical fitness has always been
something that I valued. I have
always enjoyed being active and
healthy, and I love kids! Thats
why being a teacher means a lot to
her. Ms. Pitts is also the softball
coach at Central.
She laughed when I asked her about
how she got hired at Central. The
beginning of her school year was a
little chaotic due to the fact that she
was out of the country when she got
hired and didnt find out she had a
job at Central until a week before
school started. It didnt take long
before Ms. Pitts became a favorite
face with the faculty and students.
She is looking forward to being back
at Central next year.
Regardless of how she was hired, Central and its students are very happy to have
her as a teacher and look forward to her being at Central for many years to come!

Attention Juniors
Natalye Gividen
With just a few weeks of school left, Central High School Juniors are feeling the stress of their rapidly approaching
Senior year. Senior year should be considered a blessing, but for most of us there is so much stress. We are thinking about
our ACT score and if that is too low, or how unaffordable college is and how some of us may be unable to attend without
working multiple jobs.
These last two months of Junior year have arguably been the hardest so far of our high school career. We laughed
it off when we were younger and our parents said that high school would go by before a blink of the eye, but now we see
that it turns out to be true and not such a laughable statement. High school is almost over, and within months we will be
applying for the colleges and technical schools where we will spend the next four to six years of our lives. These are big
decisions we didnt anticipate making at the beginning of junior year, but now we are being forced to make them. Its no
wonder the junior class is so stressed out.
Wait. Take a moment and breathe. We still have time. In fact, the majority of us have a whole summer to visit
colleges, boost our ACT score, and weigh our options before making a decision that can change the course of our future.
There is still time to turn our 18 ACT score into something to be proud of; we have all summer to visit college campus's all
across Kentucky; we can intern this summer in the field we believe we want to study; we can work to earn some
money. Calm down Juniors, you have plenty of time to get things in order. There is no reason to stress now.
The reality is nobody is going to
get it perfect on the first try. Some of us
are going to be rejected from our dream
schools, some of us are going to be
accepted to those schools and not be
able to afford going to them. There will
be some of us who attend community 1. Finish strong

The Danger of Tanning

By: Antonio Heard
Summer is near! Everyone is going out more, hanging with their friends, and
enjoying the warm weather that is soon upon us. But has anyone stop to actually think
what this warm weather is doing to our body, your body? Many people with fairly lighter
skin take this time of the year to go out and tan, in the tanning beds, in the natural sun,
and never actually take the time out to think about what some of the negative side
effects are that could happen to your skin. Tans are caused by harmful (UV) ultraviolet
radiation from the sun or tanning lamps, and if you have one or thinking about getting
one you should keep this in mind: that youre damaging your skin cells.
Many people who go out and tan should consider the danger that may come.
Especially woman who are afraid of wrinkles, brown spots, lax skin, and much more.
The ultraviolet radiation from a tanning bed is so high and unnatural and can cause the
skin retains the ill effects over time. Another thing to keep in mind is the risk of
melanoma. According to http://calskincancer.com/patients/derm-dictionary-california/,
melanoma is a tumor of melanin-forming cells, typically a malignant tumor associated
with skin cancer. If you are tanning before the age of 35 the chances of getting
melanoma is higher. So these are some serious stuff many people should be thinking
about before they go tanning.
So yes, summer is near! And there is going to be a lot more sun shine. But would
you rather keep up with the trend of nice tan skin in the summer, or would you rather
save yourself and the skin cells in your body? Is fitting in more important than saving
your life? Is ignoring the dangers more important than saving yourself from getting
cancer that will ruin your life forever? These are some questions you should ask
yourself now, because summer is coming and taking care of your body is something
you seriously have to think about.

Sunscreen works by combining organic and inorganic

active ingredients. Inorganic ingredients like zinc
oxide or titanium oxide reflect or scatter ultraviolet
(UV) radiation. Organic ingredients like
octylmethoxycinnamate (OMC) or oxybenzone
absorb UV radiation, dissipating it as heat.

Everything Happens For a Reason

Darius Howlett

Many people think life is all about chaos, mishaps, tears, and everything going
wrong, but I believe that everything happens for a reason. There are many times in my
life that lead me to believe this is statement is true.
One experience that lead me to believe that everything happens for a reason is,
when I missed the bus but it was for the better, even though I didnt see that yet. One
day I just got out of detention and went to the bus stop.
As soon as I got to the bus stop, the bus pulled off. It
was the TARC I needed and the next one wasnt
scheduled to come until another hour later, and theyre
always running late. I stood out in the cold, rainy
weather for a hour and a half just to get on the tarc I
needed, which was the 43. The ride home was wet and
slow. I was expecting to do my chores when I got home
clean the kitchen and vacuum. When I got into the
house, they were done! If I had never missed the tarc, I
wouldve had to do a lot and I didnt have to.
Another thing that lead me to believe that everything
happens for a reason was when I was going to sneak
out when my mother was gone, but the dog took a crap
and I had to clean it up. My mama and my siblings were
gone for the night; they were supposed to be back the next morning. It was just me and
the dog, Boss at home. My friend texted me, asking if I wanted to go out that night, and I
said yes. I got ready, but at the same time mind I was hesitant to go. I was about to
leave when Boss decided to take a crap right in front of the door. I whooped him, put
him in the basement for time out, and cleaned it up. When I was done, I opened the
door only to see my mother pull up in the driveway. So I left the door open, ran into my
room and put on my pajamas and came back out in enough time to greet her and my
siblings as they were walking in. If the dog wouldve
never crapped, I wouldve been gone and in a lot of
trouble with my mother when I got back.
One of the last reasons that lead me to
believe everything happens for a reason is when I
found my missing textbook while in detention. It was
a Tuesday, and I was in detention because of a
referral I got the week before. Mr. Wolfe asked me
to go get some folders from Ms. Miller and there I
saw my missing College Algebra textbook sitting
right next to the folders. If I was never in detention,
Mr. Wolfe wouldnt have asked me to go get his
folders and I wouldnt have found my textbook that Id been looking for.
With all these examples that everything happens for a reason, maybe youll get
around to believing that also. So whenever something is going on in your life, whether
its good or bad, just know that its happening for a reason.

If I Just Had This, I Could .

Natalye Gividen
It is an inner struggle that we all face. Ask a friend about something they dream of doing, it is likely that
the dream is out of their grasp for some reason. The reason may be time or money, but typically it is
because we as people feel like we have to accomplish things in a specific order or not at all.
In the book, The Shadow of the Wind, there is a beautiful chapter (5) that perfectly explains this thought
process in a way that is relatable and thought provoking. The main character speaks of his childhood and
a time where he had wanted to be a novelist. There is a small shop and in the window is a pen said to
have been used by the famous author Victor Hugo. The pen mesmerizes him, and becomes his object of
desire. This pen is out of his grasp, and he believes that because of that the dream of becoming the next
great novelist is impossible, "I longed for the pen, and detested the pencil because of it."
A lot can be said about Daniel's thought process; the same is true for the rest of us. We all want to do
something someday. The someday part is our excuse. We could accomplish our dreams (within reason)
today. Someday is the result of our feelings of inadequacy. Someday results from our lack of faith in
ourselves. This is a problem in our society, caused partially by advertisements and media, but mostly
from our natural response as people to want to be better. "I have to have this to be able to do that. I
have to be able to accomplish this before I can dream of doing that. According to us, nobody is born
with the tools they need to accomplish their dreams.
The problem with this thought process is simple, nothing is ever going to be accomplished if we are
unable to acquire the tools and experience. I hate to sound like a motivational speaker here, but each
and every one of us can accomplish anything we set our minds to. It's a matter of putting our dreams off
that causes someday to become never.
For example: a child dreams of climbing a mountain. By the time that child becomes a teenager, that
child has filled out the details of that dream. They want to climb Mount Everest with their oldest sibling.
As an adult, the dream is often swept under the rug. She's too busy and will set out to accomplish it
later. She's too out of shape, and needs to deal with that first. Her sister can't go with her, so the dream
is ruined.
We can't sit around and expect dreams to be made true. We also can't seek perfection. Following the
road to your dream can be a bumpy path, but it can be made worse if we keep taking detours. You will
never reach your destination.
Get up and keep moving. If you want to be a musician, get up and sing. If you want to act in a Hollywood
film, start acting now. If your dream is to go to a specific college, apply. I do not say this to make
struggles seem invalid. I say this because we wait for things to fall into place and that's not the way the
world works. You have to take action now. Don't wait for tomorrow.

Do you ever wonder about who helps you out when you

Lawyers are people that help you, argue for you and present facts in court to help prove
that you are innocent. Lawyers communicate with clients and others. There are many
type of lawyers, but the main one would be a lawyer. These Criminal lawyers go in and
out of court a lot; they work on things that have to do with criminals. Lawyers have to go
to school for many years just to become what they are.
Lawyers have to go to law school for three years to get a law degree to become a They
also have to pass a state written bar examination. It usually takes 7 years of fulltime
studying after high school. Thats four years of undergraduate study, then three years of
law school. Most states require lawyers to complete a juris doctor (J.D).
There are many different types of lawyers: military lawyer, immigration lawyer,
Family/divorce lawyers, Public interest lawyers, Environment lawyers, personal injury

When teens think about Derby, they think of Thunder and horse racing, not human trafficking. As it turns
out, Derby brings a massive increase human trafficking to our city each year. Some of the victims are brought
into the city for prostitution and some are kidnapped and taken away from the city. By definition, however,
people do not have to enter or leave a city for it to be human trafficking. They simply have to be exploited for

Derby should be about having a day off from school to watch a

bunch of horses and eat funnel cakes. In all honesty, there is a lot more to
the Kentucky Derby then that. Many of the people who visit for the
Kentucky Derby are here to bet on horses - among other things. With them they bring drugs, alcohol, and the
money that encourages the behavior of traffickers. Not all trafficking victims end up kidnapped and taken to
another city. Often, traffickers are somebody that the victim trusts or is close to who force them to sell drugs or
have sex for money. The Derby is one of the times this is most likely to happen.
A common mistake that people make when it comes to human trafficking, aside from not thinking of it
as a local problem, is not realizing that parents willingly put their children in situations where they will be
trafficked. Just because somebody comes home
at night doesnt mean they are not being "They charmed me with nice

of human trafficking that goes on in our state. Angela Renfro
There are actions you can take to prevent yourself
from falling victim to human trafficking during
Derby this year:
1) Do not take jobs from places like Craigslist where the sources are not entirely known. It is easy to be
manipulated into working for little to nothing while somebody else reaps the benefit.
2) Nobody is worth selling your body for. No matter how cool the party, how great the drugs, your body is
worth a thousand times more and anybody who thinks its a fair trade isn't worth your time.
3) Steer clear of crowded places.

4) If you are not being paid for services up front, then do not preform them. This again goes with rule
number 1.
5) Always have a phone on you.
6) Bring a friend with you. It can be easy to get lost in a crowd.
7) Update social media. Its actually a lot harder to be trafficked if you have an active social media profile.

Kentucky's first report on child victims of human trafficking said the allegations
investigated involving children 17 and younger included:
Victims prostituting themselves in exchange for drugs.
A victim having a pimp.
A victim stripping for money.
A guardian offering to sell the victim for money or into a prostitution ring.
Victims working as prostitutes in a massage parlor.
A victim from another state running away.
Victims advertising for prostitution.

Prisoners Should Have the Right to Vote

Akeeva Marshall
Many people debate on whether prisoners should have the right to vote. There are people who
believe prisoners shouldnt have the right to vote because they are believed to be bad people. There are
others who believe that prisoners should be
eligible to vote. I totally agree that prisoners
should be allowed to vote.

Anyone that breaks

the law doesnt have

Prisoners should have the right to vote

because they are just as human as we are.
Voting is a human right that should not be
taken away from anyone. Just because a person
is in prison doesnt mean they dont have
political opinions. Humans have opinions and
that means prisoners have opinions, too. They
should have the right to vote because every
opinion matters. Prisoners should get to have
something to do with the world outside of
prison, because their lives are affected by the
laws the government makes. A prisoners voice
should matter in the decisions our government makes.

the countrys best

interests at heart. So
how can such people
be allowed to vote?
Newtimes

Prisoners should feel like they still have a say or an opinion about who should run for our country possibly.
Yes, people could look or assume that prisoners could or may vote for someone who is not fit to be president
but, everyone (including prisoners) are entitled to their own opinion and should be allowed to vote.

I believe they should

be given a right to vote
since voting is a right,
not a privilegeits a
responsibility.
Newtimes

There are people who think letting

prisoners vote is a bad thing because they dont
deserve to vote. Some people believe they
dont deserve to because theyve been put in
jail for breaking laws so the prisoner shouldnt
be given the privilege to vote in such a highquality decision. Certainly, prisoners should
have the right to vote because they are still a
part of society. Its unfair that prisoners arent
allowed to vote because theyre considered
bad people or because they made bad
mistakes. They shouldnt feel excluded from
the community.

In the future, prisoners should have the privilege and right to vote because it is important; they should
have a voice, and they have a human right just as humans who are not in prison. Prisoners are human as well
and deserve to have a say in who we elect for powerful and responsible positions.

What do the experts say about this issue?

Prisoners Voting Rights by States

Approximately 5.85 million Americans with felony

People in prison,

People with
felony convictions
can vote upon

Some people

All people can

Are Humans Too Dependent on Computers?
Technology plays a huge role in society today. A majority of the people in
the world use technology everyday all day. An electronic device can be helpful
and useful source but, sometimes it can mess up humans way of thinking. Do you
ever think humans are too dependent on computers? Tablets, cell phones, etc.?
Many people use computers to look up things and do research. Computers
have a way of thinking for humans and people take advantage of that. People
start to use them for everything they do. Being dependent on computers is a
negative thing, because it makes humans lazy. People become lazy because they
wont think for themselves, by not wanting to think through a situation, instead,
they go straight to the computer and let the computer decide for them.
Computers can be useful by making their lives easier, but a person can get
addicted to them. For example, dependence on spell check can lead to a loss of
spelling skills. This is a problem because when people have to write without a
computer they dont know if they made a mistake. Although spell check and auto
correct may speed up the writing process, people should not rely on computers;
we still need to learn how to punctuate and spell correctly.
Are children who are growing up with technology going to have lower IQs
because they dont have
use their own brains?

The Brain
Miana Petitjacques

The brain is full of secrets just waiting to be untold. Its actually one of the
body parts that scientist are still trying to figure out. There are millions of things
that scientists are still trying to figure out. Like how we dream or why we dream, or
like how our brain holds
information. But the real question
is will we ever be able to figure it
out. There is a lot of information
that we have uncovered over these
years since we evolved but then
again there is a lot more that we
still dont.
The brain is the most amazing
and mysterious part of your body. A
lot of your own secrets are kept in
there. But how? Your conscious
and subconscious is how. They are
both two different things. Your
subconscious is the thing that
takes care of your basic life functioning and learned behavior habits. Its the reason
why we react to things. Like for instance, if someone wants to fight you, you can
either fight back or walk away. Your subconscious also stores your knowledge and
life experiences. So it helps you remember about the past and what youve seen or
done. Our conscious however, is where we can be more mindful about what we
think, feel, or do.
So it basically takes
things slowly and
lets you think
before you act.
Dreams when
you think about the
word dream, you
think of it as
somewhere you can
go and think about
anything you want.
But have you ever
thought about how
or why we dream?

Dreams are basically stories and images our mind create while we sleep. There are
many theories about why we dream, but no one knows for sure. Researcher John
Philips, from NYU, says, Dreams have no purpose or meaning, while Misha Collins
from Georgia state, says that Dreams are necessary for mental, emotional, and
physical health. Its a argument that has been going on for years. There are also
other theories of dreams that people have. Some people think that you can
manipulate dreams to see or do what you want.
Why do we have a brain? Now it seems like a silly question with an obvious answer You need a brain to stay alive. That is true, but that is not the sole responsibility of the
brain. We have a brain because it is the control center for our bodies. Without it, our hearts
wouldnt pump and our lungs wouldnt breath. Our ears wouldnt hear and we wouldnt be
able to feel or even move. The brain gives out commands that tell the body what to do.
Other times signals travel in reverse from all our body parts back to our brain. Like if I
touch an ice cube, a signal goes from our fingers to our brains saying that its cold.
The brain is the most important part of your body. Without a brain, human beings
would not be where we are now. We wouldnt have been able to create technology or
transportation. Its pretty amazing what a brain can accomplish. There is a lot of research
about our brain so that in the future we can find out more about its functions.

The brain is one of the largest and most complex organs in the human body.It is made up
of more than 100 billion nerves that communicate in trillions of connections called
synapses.
The brain is made up of many specialized areas that work together:
The cortex is the outermost layer of brain cells. Thinking and voluntary movements
begin in the cortex.
The brain stem is between the spinal cord and the rest of the brain. Basic functions like
breathing and sleep are controlled here.
The basal ganglia are a cluster of structures in the center of the brain. The basal
ganglia coordinate messages between multiple other brain areas.
The cerebellum is at the base and the back of the brain. The cerebellum is responsible
for coordination and balance.
The brain is also divided into several lobes:
The frontal lobes are responsible for problem solving and judgment and motor function.
The parietal lobes manage sensation, handwriting, and body position.
The temporal lobes are involved with memory and hearing.
The occipital lobes contain the brain's visual processing system.
The brain is surrounded by a layer of tissue called the meninges. The skull (cranium)
helps protect the brain from injury.

How to Play the Piano

Anab Ahmed

Have you ever heard a song any song and thought, I wish I could play that on an instrument? Well I
have, and I recommend the piano, because the piano is the most loved and challenging instrument. You can
play the piano in many different styles like hip hop or classical or modern. But before you do all that, you have
to have a piano, learn the proper posture for playing, and learn the keyboard, then figure out what sound each
key makes. Finally, you have to know how to read the music sheets, because if you cant read the music, then
how will you know what notes and letters to play on the keyboard?
First, lets talk about your posture and your equipment. To learn how to play the piano, you have to have
the right equipment that fits you comfortably A medium-sized upright piano is a good choice, because it takes
up less space than a grand piano and has much better sound than compact pianos. There are electric pianos
which are much easier to move. For a medium-sized upright piano or grand piano, you will probably need a
professional delivery service lined up to help you move the piano. Moving a piano yourself could be a dangerous
and difficult thing to do. Once you move, it it will take a couple hours or a day for the strings to acclimate, so
avoid playing it for a while once you get it. Once you got the piano set up and tuned, its time for you to get a
bench to sit on. The height of the bench is really important because it helps give you good posture. If your bench
is at the proper height your fingers should gently arc downward and
rest on top of the keys.
Learning the keyboard and notes is not really difficult as long
as you pay attention to them. Double check your hand positions to
make sure youre at the center of the keyboard. All of your fingers
should be on a white key. Your thumb should be on the white key just
to the left of a group of two black keys in the middle of the keyboard
which is the C note. The other fingers go on the other remaining keys
which are D, E, F, and G. The same applies to your left hand but only
reversed: the pinky should rest on the C, and the thumb should be on
G. There should be two keys, A and B, between your thumbs. Learning
the notes that are at the center first is better so you can reach every
Starting position on the keyboard
high and low note without standing up and moving. The keyboard
repeats its notes from high to low in octaves. This means the notes change from low (left side) to high (right
side). The piano has twelve notes: seven white key notes (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) and five black key notes (C-sharp,
D-sharp, F-sharp, A-flat, and B-flat). If you play the white key notes from C through B and back to C creates a
regular eight tone octave scale in C major playing the black key notes from C-sharp ( next to the white C key)
through B-flat creates a five tone scale. Play some notes from low to high or high to low, including the black
keys, and keep doing in until you get used to it.
The language of sheet music may seem difficult at first, but with a teacher or good guidebook and some
practice, most people pick up the basics in a short time. Being able to read sheet music opens up a whole world
of compositions for you to learn and practice. Music notes are represented by filled-in or empty oval marks
(called heads), with or without other marks (stems, which are straight lines and hooks which come off of stems)
on a set of horizontal lines called a staff that starts at a particular note, which should be remembered as a clef,
or symbol, at the front of the staff. There are different styles of notes. If you see a note with no stem, it means
its a whole note which gets 4 counts (hold it for 4 beats). A note that is not filled in is a half note and it gets 2
counts, but if you see a half note with a dot, its a dotted half note which gets 3 counts. There are more notes,
like a quarter note which gets one count and sometimes you see notes that have a stem and a hook which is

called an eighth note, which lasts one eight as long as a whole note. You should read the notes from left to right.
When notes are placed along the same vertical line, they are meant to be played together and is called a chord.
Now you know the basics of how to play the piano. It seems like a lot of work, but if you focus and try
really hard you could be the next famous pianist. I recommend the piano because the piano makes you feel and
look sophisticated no matter who you are or how many warts you have, and it keeps your brain active and
thinking fast. I dont think you can ever get bored at playing the piano, because there are always songs and
styles you can learn to play. Deep down everyone wants to learn how to play the piano, and if you cant afford
a one on one teacher, you can read or watch tutorials online and most of them are free.

Have you ever played soccer and just felt like picking up the ball and running with it. Many people
argue over what is the best sport in the world. Well there is a sport that combines football and soccer;
its called rugby. Its a sport that requires a lot of strength and hand eye coordination, and is so
popular, that it is played all around the world.
No one really knows how rugby was created but there is a story of how people got the idea for
the game. It is believed that during a game of football (soccer) a boy named William Webb Ellis
picked up the ball and begun to run with it, and that is why the rules of rugby are very similar to
football and soccer. Today rugby is played in big arenas: The Rugby World Cup and the Rugby
Championship.

WE SCRUM FOR
POSSESSION, RUN FOR
THE TRY ZONE, BLEED
FOR THE TEAM, AND
LIVE FOR THE GAME.

According to Angelfire.com, Rugby is thought to be created

in 1823, but several variations of it were played between the 15th
and 16th century. It can be traced back over two thousand years
when China and Japan were playing an early form of the sport.
People from Greece also played a very similar form of it.in Britain
a very similar form of it was also played but the thing about this
variation was that there were no restrictions to it. This was a
method of settling family feuds. People used to ride on horses with swords trying to slay the other
team while there teammates attempted to take the ball to the ball to the opposing village in an attempt
to score.
The rules of rugby are very simple. In order to make a legal pass, a teammate must either
throw it back or make a lateral pass to you. For tackling, you have to avoid neck and head areas, you
cant pile on top of your opponents while theyre on the ground, and you must tackle with hands and
shoulders, not just your shoulder. For scoring, every time a team scores it is called a try. There is a lot
of different ways to score. A try is worth 5 points, but the team still has a chance to score 2 extra
points by kicking the ball along the ground, which is called a conversion. Another way to score is a
penalty kick, but you can only get points for this after a foul play.
Today, rugby is played all around the world. If you really want to watch some rugby and cant
wait for the rugby tournament, try the Super Rugby games. This is a tournament between the top 18
countries in the world, and begins in February and continues into August.

Have you ever wondered about how mummies were

made? Or what mummies are? Read on to learn
about mummies of ancient time.
When people think of mummies, they think of
bodies wrapped in cloth, but mummies are not just
any bodies, they are dead Egyptians from ancient
time. The Egyptians believed that part of a persons
soul, the ba, returned to the body every night
after death. So they preserved the body so the soul
could survive in afterlife. Wrapping bodies and
burying them preserved them for a long period of
time.
Before they wrapped the body, they washed it then cut it open and poured salt in their intestines, lungs, livers,
and heart to dry it up and easily take it out. After the organs were taken out, they would put them in separate
jars. The Egyptians did this because they believed that their organs would return to their body and they would
be whole again. After the body was dried and cleaned, it would be adorned with jewelry. Then it got wrapped
in linen cloths.
In some eras, the name of the mummy would be written in its bandages. This is what helped Egyptologists
identify certain mummies. They would also insert a magical amulet to protect the mummies in their
afterlife. They put funeral masks on the bodies that went from their head to their shoulder so that they could
recognize their body in the afterlife. The funeral
masks were made out of solid gold, like the kind
King Tut had. Next came the coffins. Mummies
were placed in a wooden box-like coffin.
The coffin had fake eyes so the mummies could
see into the world of the living. The coffin also
had images of god and other spiritual images.
After the body was put in the coffin, they took
the coffin and put it inside the tomb. The tomb
protected the coffin from damage. Inside the
tomb, they put in personal stuff that belonged
to the mummy because they believed that in
the afterlife, the mummys property would find
its way back to them. They also had a statue,
called a shabati, that was supposed to be a
servant in the afterlife. Source

The Old Man

Anab Ahmed

The old man, long that he has lived

He sits there with skin all pale
Smelling like hes been there for ages
All cold and wrinkly
Walk into his house; there is a bitter taste
In the air of cigarettes and alcohol
The only sound is music.

Winter is Coming
The trees lose their leaves
There is a cold kiss on your cheek
Winter is coming
Hear the pop of the wood in the
Fireplace that keeps you warm and toasty
Smell the aroma of the hot cocoa
Feel all warm and good inside
Youre ready for winter.

Today my mom let me go outside with my friends and I expected to get my clothes
dusty; not witness something horrible. There was a man in a green car, but he wasnt
driving and he wasnt so much in the car. He dangled out the car for some unknown
reason. The car didnt have a door, because thats how the cars are in Africa. This car was
green and had some stuff written on it, and then dangling man had dark black skin and
dusty, torn clothes on his skinny body. He was laughing and having fun.
The adults looked like they were worried, probably wondering why that man was doing
what he was doing, but I was thinking that it looked fun. I wanted to try it, too. The
driver was dodging cars that came from the opposite direction on the really narrow
street. The dangling man looked over at the driver with a big laugh; when he looked
up!!BANG!! He got hit by another car. Then he fell out of his car, and his body rolled to
where I was standing.
His blood was everywhere because he busted his head. About the time I realized what
was happening, my mom yanked me up. She looked worried and surprised all at the
same time, hugging me and checking to see if I was alright. I guess someone called the
police, because there were two of them there, asking questions and writing the answers
down, wearing green army like uniforms with colorful badges. The driver drove away and
left his buddy because he knew he would get in trouble if he stayed.

Oppression
Maryan Mursal
Little children and babies crying and screaming
as they see their whole family disappear within a blink of an eye
They were once small children with big dreams
Now those dreams have turned into nightmares, shattered like glass
They ask themselves, Why isnt anyone helping?
When is help coming? How long will it take?
Hearing bombs dropping on the ground, BOOM!
Parents panicking and looking for their kids as the air fills with debris
People running away from the bombs, tear gas, and bullets
The sound of bullets meeting their skin
Unshed tears in everyones eyes
Its hard to cry through the smell of dead bodies, bombs and tear gas
People just stand there not shocked really at whats happening
Theyve grown used to it; its part of their lives now
The conditions they live in
How many people, races, countries, states, and children have to go through this
before anyone does something about it?
How many dreams have to be shattered?
How many children have to die young before someone realizes this isnt right?
