RESEARCH
February 2013 April 2013, The Nejapa/Tavela Archaeological Project, Oaxaca,
Mexico, Field Crew Member, excavation of tests pits at selected sites in the Nejapa
region of Oaxaca, Mexico, including two sites with ball courts; assisted with
horizontal excavations of two house sites near Santa Ana Tavela, Oaxaca; trained and
led local crew members in excavations (S. King, Director).
January 2011 May 2011, Archaeological Survey of the Coixtlahuaca Valley,
Oaxaca, Mexico, Field Crew Member; full-coverage survey of the Coixtlahuaca
Valley, including registration of previously unknown archaeological sites; creation,
maintenance and analysis of GIS database; member of three-person survey team (S.
Kowalewski, Director).

2015 Proyecto Arqueologco Juegos de Pelota Nejapa/Tavela, Co-Director:
Directed large-scale mapping project of 14 documented Postclasic ball courts in the
Nejapa region of Oaxaca, Mexico (under own permit)
2013 The Nejapa/Tavela Archaeological Project, Oaxaca, Mexico, Laboratory
Assistant: analysis of ceramic materials collected during the 2013 PANT field season;
photography of ceramic and lithic materials; data entry of ceramic analysis into
project database (S. King, Director).
2009-2010 Community Networks and the Modern Ballgame in Oaxaca, Mexico,
Director: conducted an ethnographic study of the modern ballgame known as pelota
Mixteca (Mixtec ball), including interviews with pelota Mixteca ballplayers about the
technical and sociopolitical aspects of the game, its history and the connections
between the game and community networks, as well as observations of pelota
Mixteca matches; researched newspaper archives to learn more about pelota Mixteca
during the 20th century.
June-August 2009 Proyecto de Exploracin y Rehabilitacin de la Casa
Mixteca, Zona de Arqueologa de Monte Alban (ZAMA), Oaxaca de Jurez,
Oaxaca, Mexico, Lead Field Archaeologist: led field crew in photographic registry,
cleaning and removing overgrowth of plants, excavations and removal of sedimentary
fill from erosion in the main patio area and associated rooms; created topographic
map of site for the future planning and design of anticipated site preservation project
(N. Robles Garca, Directors)
June 1-5 2009 Proyecto Urbanismo Temprano y Tardo en Coixtlahuaca, Oaxaca,
Mexico, Field Archaeologist: assisted with preliminary regional survey at two sample
sites in the Coixtlahuaca Valley; excavated 1x1 m and 2x1 m test units at both sites (S.
Kowalewski, Director).
November 2008-2009 Arizona State Museum, La Playa, Trincheras, Sonora,
Mexico, Field Archaeologist: surveyed recent erosion at the site for exposed skeletal
remains; documented and excavated four human burials found as a result of survey;
analyzed cremations excavated from the nearby site of Cerro de Trincheras (E.
Villalpando and J. Watson, Directors)

Station operations using Carlson Explorer II CESurvev program; assisted lead
archaeologist with directing mapping crew; converted in-field drawn maps to digital
