The digestive system

The Digestive System has three main functions.First,it
breaks down food into molecules the body use. Then the
molecules are absorbed into the blood and carried throughout
the body. Finally, wastes are eliminated from the body.
.The stomach is a muscular organ located on the left side of
the upper abdomen.
.It receives food receives food from the esophagus. As food
reaches the end of the esophagus, it enters the stomach
through a muscular valve called the lower esophageal
sphincter.
.The stomach secretes acid and enzymes that digest food.

The major parts of the stomach and the definitions

cecum: a pouch connected to the junction of the small and large intestines.

Ascending Colon:the first main part of the large intestine, which passes upward from the cecum on the
right side of the abdomen
Hepatic Flexure: the sharp bend between the ascending and the transverse colon. The right colic flexure is
adjacent to the liver, and is therefore also known as the hepatic flexure
Transverse Colon: the middle part of the large intestine, passing across the abdomen from right to left
below the stomach.
Splenic Flexure: a watershed region as it receives dual blood supply from the terminal branches of the
superior mesenteric artery and the inferior mesenteric artery, thus making it prone to ischemic damage in
cases of hypotension because it does not have its own primary source of blood.
Descending Colon:the part of the large intestine that passes downward on the left side of the abdomen
toward the rectum.
Sigmoid Colon:the S-shaped last part of the large intestine, leading into the rectum.

More important parts of the stomach

Duodenum:the first part of the small intestine immediately beyond the stomach, leading to the
jejunum.
duodenojejunal Flexure:an abrupt bend in the small intestine at the junction of the duodenum and
jejunum.
Jejunum:the part of the small intestine between the duodenum and ileum.
Ileum:the third portion of the small intestine, between the jejunum and the cecum.
Terminal Ileum:the distal end of the small intestine that intersects with the large intestine. It
contains the ileocecal sphincter, a smooth muscle sphincter that controls the flow of chyme into the
large intestine.
Large Intestine:the cecum, colon, and rectum collectively.
