FINAL
In her persuasive piece discussing the exploitation of labor laws during
a womens suffrage convention to other women, Florence Kelley passionately
shifts from children to women in order to change the current child labor laws
for the sake of the children (12) because without a change our society
would not progress.
Kelley pushes to illustrate to other women child labor is a national
issue to reform the laws that allow children to work long hours by using
descriptive adjectives and other rhetorical devices to convey urgency
towards ending child labor. She academically uses connotation to show the
despicable actions that are occurring in sweating system[s], tiny children
robbed of school [,] (9) to establish the fact that the audience is denying the
right of education to the children, so the adults can have a more convenient
and laid back lifestyle. The word robbed (9) emphasizes how criminal child
labor and the severity of the crime. Kelley is fearful that society will not see
the errors in its ways and sabotage any signs of progress which would be her
worst nightmare. She is alluding to the fact that the children are being
robbed of their life and childhood not just their education. The harsh work is
cutting into the childrens time in school, and this is creating an ignorant

generation. She is refuting the idea that work creates knowledge by

emphasizing the importance of school. She views school as the only way to
obtain intelligence that would lead to progress. Work is not going to increase
a childs intelligence as efficiently as school. People are able to see physical
changes to their children. They are more tired, and they are becoming
underdeveloped in intellect. Intellect is important nationally. If a nation is full
of ignorance, it will crumble under the weight of its own stupidity. Taking
away education will cause the nation to become a ghost town, and
everything the founding fathers fought for will be wasted. All progress would
be lost, and progress would only be an idea that would never be able to take
shape. If the laws are reformed to restrict the hours that children may work,
the children will be able to have an education at school, so the nation wont
deteriorate. The lack of progress could be averted and overcome. In addition,
Kelley is personifying the system (9) which is sweating (9). The phrase
means that the children are unable to go to school due to the arduous
conditions the children are working in. Children should never be overworked.
This will create a workforce that will be burnt out by the time they reach the
adult hood. Thus, the products would be less than satisfactory, making
American products plummet in value. The economy would then deteriorate
into ruins. Changing the laws would allow children to have the energy and
drive to work when they are older. This in turn could create better products
than what is currently available which would help the economy in the end.
Progress would be made.

Progress is essential to human life; lifes meaning is progress. There

are many children in slavery and working long excruciating hours for enough
pay to buy a single loaf of bread. This needs to end. Florence Kelleys piece is
an advocate for the children who are trapped working and not completing
their lifes purpose. The people who make Apple products in China earn next
to nothing, yet it is a job. The conditions are brutal and highly dangerous. If
the people were liberated, they would have more job options which would
not trap them into a life of slavery. Some children are trapped in slavery by
sex trafficking which is become a pandemic. Young girls are being sold into
sex slavery which people are fighting to stop. They are losing their education
for the pleasure of a cruel, perverted man. These girls are learning even less
than the children working in America. They are trapped in a cellar with
mediocre food and living conditions. The caste system in Hinduism has been
compared to slavery. The child Dalits are not being loved and are not getting
the education or rights they deserve. They cannot move up in society, and
their existence is viewed as pointless. The Dalits are not allowed to use
anything the upper caste people use. Dalit items are meant to be destroyed.
Their cups are clay which can be smashed and costs next to nothing. These
children cannot fulfil any of their dreams, and absolutely no progress is being
made. The citizens in The Giver are forced into jobs that are the best fit for
each individual. There is no freedom of emotion and many historical events
were kept hidden from the people. This restricts the citizens education as
children and throughout life. Again, there is no progress being made. Also,

slavery in America did not allow any African Americans to have an education.
They were the lowest beings on Earth. The children were not allowed to
pursue their interests because they had to work all day and night for no pay.
They were not even aloud to be converted to Christianity. They were meant
to be puppets for their masters, and as a result, the slaves were
dehumanized. Child labor must be abolished.
