Who? When? Where?

He was born in Firenze on
the 9th March 1454;
He was an Italian navigator,
cartographer and explorer;
He died in Siviglia in 1512.

Why is he famous?
He was between the first
explorers of the new world (the
America) to what he gave its
name.

HIS IDEAS
At the beginning of ' 500 his ideas
were published and some texts.
He gained notable success;
They told of his travels from
Europe to America , and long
the coasts up to the Land of Fire
(South America).

HIS FIRST JOURNEY

It occurred from 1497 to 1498 ;

Vespucci took part in the voyage of

exploration with Juan de la Cosa ;
He embarked on a fleet of four ships ;
The likely commander of this expedition
was Juan Diaz de Solis ;
It was King Ferdinand II of Aragon that
wanted to travel to know if the
mainland was really far from the island
of Hispaniola and take a broad view of
the new lands .

HIS SECOND JOURNEY

It occurred from 1499 to 1500;
Vespucci participated to one
expedition giuded by Alonso de
Ojeda;
After having touched earth, they
separated and Vespucci continued
to the South until he reached the
Amazon river and after until to
Cabo de Sao Roque;
The shipment directed to North
recognizing the island of Trinidad ,
before returning to Spain.

HIS THIRD TRAVEL

It occurred from 1501 to 1504;
In this period, Vespucci travelled
and worked for Portugal;
In 1501 he took part in an
expedition by Gonzalo Coelho;
He stopped in the islands of Cape
Verde;
He reached the Brazilian coast till
Rio de Janeiro;
The expedition continued until Rio
de la Plata

HIS FOURTH JOURNEY

It occurred from 1503 to 1504;
In his fourth travel always sustained
by Portugal, Vespucci located an
island in the middle of the ocean,
then the expedition continued until
the coast of Brazil;

In this travel, there werent

important discoveries.

 A very big sailboat was

dedicated to Amerigo Vespucci
and took its own name.
It was built by the Italian Navy in
1930 and was inaugurated on the
22nd of February 1931.
