A Midsummer Nights Dream

Act 2, Scene 1 (From lines 173-255)

Introduction:
Oberon, the king of fairies, and Titania, the queen of fairies, get in an argument. Once they
finished arguing, Oberon wants to do something bad to her in form of revenge. He sends Puck
(his jester) to find a flower. The magic behind this flower is that its juice, when put on anyone's
eyelids while asleep, gets you madly in love with the first person you see. Oberon plans to put it
on Titania's eyes until she does what he wants. While Puck flies off to find the flower, Oberon
notices a fight between Helena and Demetrius in the woods and starts to think how he can fix
it.This scene is important because the author introduces the messed up love crushes that exist
between the main characters.
The characters that act in this scene are almost all driven by an immediate emotion and
therefore respond on impulse. Helena, for example, is desperate to get Demetrius approval and
love. This is why her voice and body language reflect desperation but at the same time hope.
Oberon, moves confidently and slowly because he has a lot of power in his hands and can
probably do whatever he pleases. He has a direct and demanding voice towards others but not
in an offensive way. Demetrius, on the other hand, is tired of being chased by Helena and
therefore moves quickly and has an offensive voice towards her. His gestures reflect him being
sick of Helena and all he wants is to get away from her. Lastly Robin, aka Puck, moves joyfully
and his voice is respectful but with total trust towards Oberon. He moves quickly to fulfill the
orders of his king.
The theme we see throughout this scene is the conflict of love. Oberon and Titania cannot agree
and Demetrius totally rejects Helenas immense love towards him. This connects to the overall
theme of the book because it represents how love is difficult in many ways and things don't
often turn out as the way we thought they were.

Helena:

Helena:

Demetrius:
Youre risking your reputation
By going off the grid and stalking someone who dont like you.
You gonna get mocked and raped
If you stay in this block at this hour of the night
Helena:
But I know you got me.
Your face lights up the darkness.
This dont seems empty to me cause
You means the world to me.
Demetrius:
Is your really tryna get hurt
Out here?
Helena:
They is no one in this block!
That's flyer than you.
I know you got me boo.

Demetrius:
Stop following me, just leave me alone girl.
You really gonna make me have to hurt you.
Helena:
Boy you already hurt me, you should be
Ashamed of yourself. Us
Women ain't as tough as men
For love. You should be the one
Chasing me.
Exits Demetrius
Dang you gonna make me still
chase you bro!
Exits Helena
Oberon:
Deuces fam. You gonna see,
by the time he leave the block
he gonna be the one in love with
Helena.
Robin Enters
Yo, you got the flower fam?
Robin:
Yeah you know I gotchu bro.
Oberon:
Give it to me fam. (Takes flower)
I got this spot where all the
thyme blooms, and oxlips and
violets grow. Thats where Titania sleeps
sometimes at night. She gets sleepy wit
the flowers and all that other stuff.
Ima put the juice of the flower on Titanias
eyes and give her them bad desires.
(Gives part of the flower to Robin)
Here you go fam. You take some too.
Go around the block and you gonna look for the other
two, Helena and Demetrius. Put some of that
juice in my boy Demetriuss eyes and make
him fall in love wit her. Watch out bruh, cause the
first person he see, he gonna fall
in love wit.

Robin:
