"Bill Evans was a brilliant jazz pianist with a distinctive touch and an impressionist style. In the late '50s, he was
instrumental in solidifying Miles Davis' modal concepts introduced on Kind of Blue, contributing the liner notes to that
album as well as coauthoring "Blue in Green" and "Flamenco Sketches" (although he is not credited with the latter, it is
built up on a progression from his tune "Peace Piece", which appears on Everybody Digs Bill Evans). Evans is perhaps
most remembered for leading memorable piano trios, particularly an early '60s duo consisting of Paul Motian on drums
and Scott LaFaro on bass. LaFaro died in an automobile accident, ten days after their legendary engagement that
produced the classics, Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby. Evans was a studious musician, classically
trained and exceptionally aware of the music he mastered. Introspective is a word that is often associated with the
artist's music, as he had an extremely soft touch at times and gravitated towards the languid ballads. However, this
doesn't mean he couldn't bop with the best of them, and he was always trying to innovate. For example, Bill claimed that
he would sometimes hold a note on the piano and move it in a way that would suggest vibrato, like the way a violinist or
guitarist would move their finger slightly on a fretboard to produce a wavering sound. It was impossible to produce this
effect on the piano, but the time it took to make this small movement effected the phrasing that Bill played."

RYM Rough Guide for Bill Evans
Biography
Bill Evans' career began quietly, recording only two solo albums with occasional session work before joining
Miles Davis' sextet in 1958, a collaboration that culminated in his contributing compositions and liner
notes as well as his distinctive touch on the piano to Kind of Blue, one of the touchstones of modern Jazz.
Evans soon left Miles band and concentrated on his own solo work for the following two decades.
His most frequent vehicle was the jazz trio, where he would assemble sympathetic players to complement
his delicate style. Evans own mark in history would be cemented after recording a series of concerts at the
Village Vanguard in June 1961 for Riverside with Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums. The
recordings have been hailed as landmarks for their near perfection in execution, while also criticized for a
lack of melodic focus and undue influence in development of later jazz piano. Throughout his life Evans
would explore the seemingly unending creative possibilities of the simple trio.
Outside of the trio format, Evans found success with a quintet on the wellregarded Interplay album as well
as experiments in overdubbing (a rarity for jazz albums of the age) which he referred to as Conversations
With Myself and where up to three Evanses join the conversation. While perhaps not entirely successful,
the album did win a Grammy for best jazz instrumental performance of 1963, the first of five Evans albums
to win the award. The mid 1970s found him recording two notable albums of duos with ....
Evans had his own demons, and a lifetime of addiction and subsequent money troubles led him to the
recording studio and on the road many more times for the rest of his life with mixed results. In all, nearly
600 hours of recorded music is known to exist by Evans. On the one hand, few careers are as well
documented especially over the last few years of his life (16 CDs were produced from the recordings of one
week in AugustSeptember, 1980), whereas on the other, he truly put everything on the table, warts and
all. Evans was known to have been very pleased with the last trio he assembled featuring Marc Johnson
and Joe LaBarbera, on bass and drums respectively. But just as Scott LaFaro had passed just weeks after
his transcendent performances on the Village Vanguard shows 19 years earlier, Evans left his refound
success barely a week after his last recordings were captured on The Last Waltz and Consecration.
