Capstone A-2

Capstone Proposal- Civil Engineer Designing a Road

Overview- I want to learn from a civil engineer, I will be doing this by designing a road so I can
learn what a road needs and the process to build one. Throughout this project I will be doing a
lot of research, and asking my mentor a lot of questions.
Passion Behind Project- After I get out of high school, my hopes and dreams are to study and
hopefully become a civil engineer.
Mentor- My mentor is Misty Christian who is currently a civil engineer with the company,
Kimley-Horn. She attended Texas A&M and received her Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering.
I wish to understand and learn first-hand what its like to be a civil engineer. I also wish to learn
how to propose ideas, how to research efficiently and how to get a better understanding of
building codes. I will meet with Mrs. Christian every other Friday, at Waxahachie global high
school. We also can contact each other through email.
Benefits- This project benefits me because I wish to become a civil engineer after high school,
and this opportunity will help me greatly learn about what exactly civil engineers do, how they
prepare for a project, what actually matters when you are a civil engineer, and what it is like to
actually be on a construction site of a road. It can also help my mom, because later on in her life
she has informed me that she wishes to open up a funnel cake restaurant and told me she

would like for me to design a building for her. This can benefit the community because it can
help me see things better on building codes, sewage lines, buildings etc. It might help me be
able to come up with a safer or a better way of designing a new road or building in the future.
Research topics- How really effective are building codes, and how safe do they really make us?

Milestones1). 11/13/15 Meet Mrs. Christian officially, get a schedule and discuss what exactly I will be
doing.
2). 11/18/15 Pick a research topic
3). 11/19/15Begin research over the topic
4). 12/22/15 Have research done for the research paper
5). 12/28/15 Begin writing the research paper.
6). 1/18/15 Have research paper done and finished typing
7). 1/19/15 Get peer evaluated by some peers and begin to make some edits.
8). 1/28/15 Get edited by teachers such as Mrs. Casey, Mrs. Moon, and Mrs. Thompson etc.
9). 2/5/15 Get the paper checked by Mrs. Christian and make sure the information is valid and
everything looks good.
10). 2/15/15 Make ideas on different ways to present my final project for the end of the year
capstone showcase.

11). 2/21/15 Decided on what way I am going to choose to present my capstone project in.
12). 4/8/16 Have the Capstone project done
13). 4/11/15Get peers to evaluate my project and begin to make small presentations in front of
friends and family.
14). 4/15/16 Make any edits that needs to be done based on peer evaluates
15). 4/20/15 Present my project to my church group and see what they think about it and see if
there needs to be any changes.
16). 5/1/16 Have my project complete done and ready to present in the showcase.
Audience- To present with Judah over codes and Ordinances about the process of building a
road one day in Advisory to our senior class.
Engineering Design Process- 1). First I need to decide what road will I be doing, and what
exactly do I want to design?
2). Research the rules and regulations of the City of Waxahachie.
3). Begin design and making the road, and everything that goes along with it.
4). Talk to Mrs. Christian and get professional help and advice at what I'm going to do, and
show her my design.
5). Create the road on Revit, or CAD.
6). Show Mrs. Christian my road that I designed.
7). Improve on what changes needs to be made.

8). Present at showcase.

Goals, or what I hope to accomplish from this project- Design a successful road, with sewage,
water lines and get it approved. Be able to have a better understanding and learning of civil
Engineering.
