Clifford Sifton- Help us to Settle the West!

It is the year 1896. Your name is Clifford Sifton, and as the new Minister of the Interior of
Canada you have been made responsible for settling Western Canada. With the ties back to
Britain, your superiors are expecting that you will be encouraging other British settlers to settle
the rowdy west.
What will you do? How will you do it? Will you only advertise to the British, or are there
others are in Europe, or even in North America who you think will make better farmers?
It is your job to create an advertisement, that will help encourage settlers to come to
Western Canada. Acting as Clifford Sifton you are looking for certain groups of individuals to
move West. How you do it, and what you do is completely up to you!

You can either:


Create a poster that is designed to be placed in certain countries you wish to advertise to.
(groups of three
It must be designed for a certain group, that you have identified.
It must be an attractive poster that will get attention (color, neatness, convincing)
It must represent the kind of advertising that would be seen in the late 19th century.
Create a 30 sec- 1min radio broadcast designed to be placed in certain countries you wish to
advertise to. (groups of three)
It must be designed to attract a certain group that you have identified.
It must sound like a radio advertisement, with intelligent and convincing language.
It must represent the kind of advertising that would be seen in the late 19th century.
Create a 30 sec- 1.30 min video advertisement to be shown in certain countries that you wish
to advertise to. (I know videos did not exist yet but we can pretend they did!) (group of
three)
It must be designed to attract a certain group that you have identified.
It must be edited together to look like a real advertisement that would convince a settler to
move to Western Canada.
It must represent the kind of advertising that would be seen in the late 19th century.
Choose one of the above options that you think you can do a great job with!

Keep in mind you will only have a small amount of allotted time. Do not pick something if you
think that you will be unable to complete it in the time designated.
