This short course is designed to provide students with strategies to further improve their reading and speaking
fluency. Students will learn and practice reading strategies to increase their reading rate. Students will read
some of the material before class so that time can be spent discussing the content and vocabulary. Class time
will also be spent practicing TOEFL speaking tasks which require a combination of listening, reading and
speaking. Anna has been teaching at the FH for some time and enjoys getting to know FH students. She has an
MA TESOL degree from MSU and is the former director at FH.
Christian life occurs as a response to Jesus Christs life, death and resurrection as foretold and fulfilled in the
Bible. Students in this class will read portions of the Bible aloud and discuss its contents. In so doing, they will
see how the Bible applies to their own personal lives as well as improve their English speaking, pronunciation,
vocabulary and comprehension. Teacher Becky is a retired public school teacher and has taught at Friendship
House MSU for many years. She loves working with International students!

Notes:

This unique class teaches creating functional and artistic clothing using textiles. Knitting is a method by which
yarn is manipulated with knitting needles to create a textile or fabric. Crocheting is a process of creating fabric
by interlocking loops of yarn, thread, or strands of other materials using a crochet hook. An added plus to this
class is that Internationals and native English speakers work together side by side. While learning and doing
these crafts, there is lively conversation between the participants. This class is held at University Lutheran
Church, 1020 S. Harrison Road, East Lansing, MI 48823 (just around the corner from Friendship House MSU).

Notes :

Many Internationals come to Friendship House MSU seeking help with informal English conversation. This class
focuses on informal, or casual, English to help students build their confidence using everyday English in ordinary
settings. There is a heavy emphasis on everyone speaking, improving listening skills and practicing using
American idioms. The class is fun, lively and informative. Teachers Tom and Kathy are retired public school
teachers who have been with Friendship House MSU for more than ten years.
This is a beginning English course that will focus on building students general language proficiency. In addition,
each class will include preparation for life-skills in the family, community, school and at work, and commonly
used idioms. Team-teaching this course will be Jan Poellet and Lisa Marshall. Both Jan and Lisa are certified
teachers with International experience in teaching English. They are scheduled to complete their Master of Art in
TESOL degree this December.

This class focuses on building the English listening skills and comprehension of International students. Many
Internationals feel that Americans speak too fast to understand what they are saying. Increasing your listening
skills builds confidence, improves vocabulary and increases speaking ability. Teacher Larisa, who is a trained
economist, has taught at Friendship House MSU for several semesters. More importantly, she is an International
who understands what it is like to learn and use English as a second language effectively.

In this course, students will learn about the life of Jesus while practicing all four communication skills in English
reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Themes include family, community, food, friendship, health, holidays
and sports. The class will be team-taught by Jan Poellet and Lisa Marshall. Both are certified teachers with
International experience in teaching English. They are scheduled to complete their Master of Arts in TESOL
degree this December.

Teacher Julio, an International from Colombia, is a professional clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst from the
University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) with an extensive background in leading group discussions. The group he
will lead at Friendship House MSU is less a class and more a meeting group where Internationals will discuss
ideas and experiences and hopefully solve problems through verbal interaction. This group will meet weekly to
talk and learn about mental health and daily living in the U.S. Mutual learning, equal participation and respect
will be the basis for group discussions. We are excited to have Julio sharing his talents with us!
This class builds International students' English abilities to describe, develop questions, do interviews and
increase fluency. Students learn that English conversation can be successfully used and remembered during
their stay in U.S. Vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, listening and speaking are emphasized in a fun,
rewarding and confidence-building way. A variety of teaching techniques, including music and daily situations,
are used to increase English proficiency. Teacher Stefanie, an International who has mastered English, has
taught at Friendship House MSU for several semesters.
Many Internationals discover that paying attention to the news U.S. and world news alike is an excellent
way to improve their English vocabulary, comprehension and practice. Newspapers, cable news, online news
websites and blogs, and magazines help Internationals grow their English conversation skills and start learning
the patterns of speech that are so important to their second language. This class is held at Martin Luther
Chapel, 444 Abbot Road, East Lansing, MI 48823. Teachers Dave & Kris are long-time Friendship House
educators.

This is the third semester this popular new class about the foods and cooking traditions of other nations is being
offered to our International students. Teacher Desi is an accomplished chef and cook. She will offer, share and
prepare her own recipes as well as those of her students with the students very involved in the preparation, too.

be enjoyed by all. There is a $35 fee to help purchase ingredients for this class. If paying the fee is a hardship for
any student, please see Director Rich.
Compared to many nations and cultures, the history of the United States is relatively brief. Still, many significant
and dramatic events and developments have taken place over its 240-year history. Like other nations,
understanding U.S. history plays a major role in understanding its culture today. This class will be a survey course
of the American colonial period, revolution, early republic, westward expansion, Civil War, industrial revolution,
and emergence as a world power. Teacher Rich is a retired pastor and long-time student and teacher of
American history.
ISC (International Spouse Connection) is a group for, and organized by, spouses of MSU International students
and scholars under the sponsorship of MSUs Office of International Students & Scholars Community Volunteers
for International Programs. They share their cultures, life stories and interests. Spouses practice English while
talking about different topics every week. There is usually lots of humor and always lasting friendships. All
International spouses and English conversation levels are welcome.

This is a new class at Friendship House and is for both people learning to sew as well as those who want to
improve their skills. We have several loaned sewing machines for students to use. Students will start with a few
simple projects and then progress to more advanced ones. They will also make things for themselves as well as
make items to donate to charity. There is a $35 fee to be a student in this class to cover the cost of sewing
materials. If this fee will be a hardship for any student, please see Director Rich. Teacher Sarah is an
accomplished seamstress. She started sewing at age 8 and has made much of her own clothing and clothing for
friends and family, including stunning wedding dresses. Please note that the class has a limited number of

Bible Study: The Book
of Hebrews
Starts June 4
Ends July 2

The Book of Hebrews is the 19th book of the New Testament Bible and was probably written about 30 years after the
death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is considered by many scholars to be one of the best written and literate of
all New Testament books. It was mainly written for people who had doubts about the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Many people of the time believed that God would send a militant king to conquer their enemies and had doubts
about the nature of Jesus as the Son of God. The author presents a strong case for Jesus being a different kind of king.
Teacher Peter is a retired bank executive.
