Therefore, | consider it quite important to share my view points ofthe bright future of the aspiring candidates. ‘Though the CSE is a hard nut to crack but one could sail through this ‘hurdle race! via strategic planning, consistent «fforts,dligence, @ patient andcalm approachand most importantly withthe beliefin one's own potential, The right selacton of the optionalis the pre requisite ofa good renkin CSE. One mustchoose the optional keeping the following pointsin mind: 4. Asubjectof yourinierest. 2. Scoring pattern of natsupjectin pastfew years. 3. Theavailabilty of study material and 4. Expertguidance. Ideally, the students should choose their subject of graduation or post graduaton as their optional but hen one must check their subjectforitsviebilly inthe civlservices examination keepingin consideration the aforementioned points ‘namely Criterion ofinlerest, scoring patter, availabiltyof study material and expert auidance ‘As porthe above mentioned ortoria of choosing optionsl, Mathematics is one ofthe safest and most ecoring optionalin the Civil Services Examination. This is the only subject which ellows the students a scope to score as high as 400+ ‘marksin anew pattem of examination with one optional subject. The popular trends show that cut of every 20 students, atleast one student has Mathematics as one of his or her optional subject. Data shows thatbefore the year 2000, The ‘maximum numberof students in the Civ services examination were the students who had taken Mathematics as their optional, However, withthe change in the CSE pattem, students have started facing difficulty with mathematics as an ‘optional due to the lack of availabilty of quality guidance and the confusion created by the labyrinth of false propagandist and mercantile, inficlentand inexperienced teachers. However since the last fow years, the popularity of the subject has increased as expert guidance keepingin view the need ofthe CSE isavailablenow. WHOCANOPTIT? ‘The students who have studied B ScMathematice/ B. Tech. can take Mathematics as the opticnalin this examination. In fact, Matharratts 1s one such optional which gives youthe advantage of a much higher score than what one could manage with other humanities subjects and thus, the chances of getting the best ranks are much better. However, there is @ certain phobia about choosing Mathematics as an optional amongst the students. Let us examine this problom through an observational analysisof the situation. We can broadly categorize the science students, especially the ones from the Mathematics background who are aspiring for the CSE, intotwo categories, The frst category s of those students who opt for Mathematicsas an optional in this prestigious exemination, The second category is obviously those students, who do not opt for it, Talking about the former category, itis a group of self motivated, dligent students who already havea penchantforthis subject. This category usually consists of hase students who seem to eat, sleep and drink Mathematics. They are highly passionate ‘about this subject anc extremely devoted tot, However, tis the latter category of students who encourage meto delve into their mind set anc explore the reasons for their decision. What Ihave discovered about the same is a disappointing fact of these students being begulled and demotivated by the “opinion givers of the seciety. (8) PREPARATION STRATEGY for IAS/IFoS Mathematics Optional by Successful Candidate KUMBHEJKARYOGESH VIJAY AIR-13 in FoS-2014 Examination & AIR-143 in 1AS-2014 Examination Classroom Student MYBACKGROUND 11am YogeshKumbhejkar. | am an Electrical Engineer trom IIT Bombay. | secured AIR 13 in Indian Forest Service Exam ((FoS) 2014 with Mathematics & Physics as the optional subjects. For Civil Service Exam (CSE) also, my optionalis Mathematics. In IFoS exam, | scored 231/400 (118 + 113)in maths. In 2013 CSE Mains, my maths score was 250/500 (109 + 141). Hence mathematics has helped me in clearing mains in both CSE and IFOS. Iwas not selected in the final listof CSE 2013. in my second CSE attempt also | appeared for mains in 2014 with Maths as the optional subject. Now i am awaiting the Mains result. This article is a humble attmept to share my experience of maths ‘optional preparation for CSE/IFoS exam. | would be glad if it helps any UPSC aspirant who is undecided about choosing the optional or those whoare already preparing with mathematicsas their ‘optional. WHY MATHEMATICS: ttis very important for a UPSC aspirant to have genuine interest in mathematics if helshe wants to ‘choose this optional. Maths used to be my favourite subject in school and in IIT also | hed pursued adcitionel courses in mathematics out ofinterest. Since the syllabus is large & requires considerable Practice, tis necessary to have a genuine interest. Apart from my inherent inclination, this optional offers certain advantages which rade it an obvious choice. n this optional, the marks you get are ‘almost proportional to your efforts. With proper hard work, a candidate can comfortably attempt all the questions in exam and expect to score around 50% marks even after heavy scaling which can ‘offer the necessary edge in this intense competition. Such candidate generally would not find any ‘question surprising in mains. This kindof certainty isnot presentin humanities optionals. ‘THE SYLLABUS ‘The prescribed syllabus for maths is quite large which makesit necessary tostick to limited sources. | relied on notes provided by Venkanna Sir et IMS for covering the syllabus. Since these notes were very comprehensive, | didn't heve to spend time scanning reference books for relevant material. ‘Venkanna Sirs classroom coaching helped me in completing the syllabus in a disciplined manner. Initially | would underline important theorems, formulae, resuits mentioned in the notes. Then i used {0 compile them in a notebook and this was Useful for revision. So eventually | had a notebook with just the crux of the matter. | would advise all candidates with maths optional to prepare such a ‘summary for all topics. Dus to lerge syllabus, there is a natural tendancy to skip a few chapters, But for the sake of compulsory questions, itis necessary to know at least basics of each chapter. The physics related chapters of slatics, dynamics, mechanics are generally left untouched whi Preparing maths optional. Regarding these chapters, my preparation was such that lwould be ableto ‘solve the compulsory 10 mark questions. They are quite manageable once you knowthe basic theory ‘and there is no point in unnecessarily losing marks. The real analysis/calculus & modem algebra ‘chaptorsaro timo coneuming but candidates cen'tafford toskip thom. PRACTICE Just knowing theory is not enough. It needs to be accompanied by consistent problem solving Practice. Itis bestto solve questions that have already been askedin mains. If some problem seems ‘Yery norvintuitive, itwould help ifthe trickto solve such problem is writen in your notebook. TESTSERIES Test series is very important for this optional. | had joined IMS test series which helped me in identifying my weak areas. Inboth CSE and IFoS mains, there were many questions similar to those covered in IMS test series. With enough practice, a candidate can achieve the ability tocomplete the maths paper in 3 hours, It's important to assess your performance after each test. As your performance improves with every test, the actual mains paper will seem just ike any other test & you wil be able to comfortably completa it. Presentation of your answer matters a lot. Your aim should be to make examiner's life as easy as. possible so thathelshe willaward you maximum marks, Only he final answer coesnt matter. Waiting proper steps is also imorant to show the logical flow with which you arrived at the solution. Soecifically mention whichever theorem or property you are using in a particular step. Wherever Possible, drew neat diagrams with prope labeling. Such small things will collectively fetch you the ‘extra marks that you are expecting from this optional. The habit of writing such detaled answers will not develop overnight and hence you have to consciously work through the test series in this direction, DURING MAINS The mains exam schedule does not provide much gap between General Studies &Maths papers. You will generally have 1 dayin between. Yournotebook containing important iormulae & theorems will be ‘ery useful at such timies. You will be able to go through this summary of each chapter and tt will provide much needed confidence before the actual paper. During the main exam, | would advise ‘completing the compulsory quostions 1 & 5 frst. Thon you can choose 3 out of ramairing6 questions. Easior questions like those from topics like linear programming, numerical analysis, linear algebra etc. should be the priority. Even if you dont know the complete answer to any question, write as many ‘steps as you can since partial marks also matter. Once you finish paper 1, don't start immediately analyzing your performance. Irrespective of whether you are very happy or deaply unsatisfied about paper 1, try to forget about it andstay calm for paper 2. INTERVIEW Intho interview, you can expect some questions related to mathematics optional, Generally you won't be asked to solve a problem because that ability has bean tested in mains. They would lke to seo whether you have a genuine curiosity regarding mathematics outside what is mentioned in syllabus. In both my UPSC interviews, | was asked about Ramanujan's work. There were questions on Vedic Mathematics, National Mathematics Day, important indian Mathematical Institutions, Field medalist Manjula Bhargava etc. Hence while preparing for interview, try to be aware about these non- theorotical aspects of maths as well. My optional subject was Mathematics, In case of Forest Service Examination, candidatois roquiredto choose 2 Opticnals, thus my second optional was Forestry with Mathematics 26 my first optional. | secured 250/400 (1254-125) marksin IFoS Exam and 300/500 (147153) marks in@SEin Maths. Thus | would give much credit for my success to my correct choice of optionalas well ‘as performance init. | am writng this to share my experience with Maths as an optional subject and ‘would feel happy if! am able to clear some of the doubts as well as apprehensions regarding it which many UPSC aspirants possess. Why! Chose Mathematics? I chose Mathematics becaus2 of my inherent interest init rom childhood. | have performed wel in this in my throughout education an¢ thus was confident enough to handle itwell. Another reason for ‘choosing it was, | wanted to have my optional from my background and thus Maths proved to be ‘appropriate choice. Having a science background, | found it much easier to study than any other ‘subject, many of which we have to study for GS prep. Iwould lke to assert few points regardingit very clearly. ‘This subject is vastin syllabus and takes more timeto study than other optonals. It also requires consistent practise. Fromwhere to study? | attended classroom coaching of IMS, Rajinder Nagar. | restricted my preparation to the handouts: provided by Venkanne Srr, Because of the voluminous syllabus, It is necessary to gauge the point where you have {0 stop. | found that the notes quile comprehensive end provided me a holst Coverage of the syllabus in ahighly structured manner. | believe that those notes are sufficient fromthe theory point of view. For practising quostions which is of utmost importance, | solved all the questions given in the notes, (whether solved or unsolved) multiple times in my registers. Besides that, | solved the questions of previous year papers provided by sir. again multiple times. restricted my preparation upto this point. Butif any student faces dificulty in understanding any particular topic or finds notes insufficient fr itor wants to practise more, he/she can use any reference book for any particular topic which can easily be foundonintemetor available in market. But again a word of caution, try to limit your preparation to the concepis relevant to the syllabus and don't delve into unnecessary theorems or proofs otherwise its a slippery slope toa massive ocean. We. tend to skip the proofs of various theorems provided inthe syllabus while studying them as they are of not much use. Proots of theorems are generally not asked in the exams. Butstil | used to go through each and every proof in a brief manner provided in the notes, The reason being it would give me a betterinsight of the topic and often helped in me developing solutions of questions. Test Series No optional is complete without writing a test series and t holds true in Maths also. Test Series is as. important in your preparation as your notes + books. Firstly, Test Series is the best mode of judging your preparation. You can fairly evaluate your performance with your marks and then focus on the woak topics, Socondly,itsa rehearsalof Mains Exam andthus helps yougroatly in time managemont. Mains exam is nearly a marathon for your hand and thus you get very much trained for facing them. Test Series also provided me another pool of questions topractise. They also helped in developing the ability of answer writing which definitely can't be developed overnight. | attended Test Series of IMS and luckily many questions of Test Series eppeared in both IFoS Exam and CSE. | wouldalso request all the candidates togive the test series by coming to classroom if possible and stick tothe timelines 2s, itreally helps in completion ofsyllabus. | hope this writeup clears some of the doubts and gives clarity on maths optional to UPSC IAS aspirants.
