Fly, Little Wings!

A CONSERVATION PROJECT PROTECTING
BALI STARLINGS, THE MASCOT OF
THE ISLAND OF GODS, AND OTHER
INDIGENOUS INDONESIAN BIRDS
is an ofcial breeding facility
in Bali Barats National Park as
poachers keep on stealing these
birds both in the wild and from
the center. But those who care will
never give up preserving this bird
species, especially because the
Bali Starling is the mascot of Bali
and so its existence is important
to this island. Founded in 1999 by
Bradley and Debbie Gardner, the
Begawan Foundation is striving
to help the government to protect
these endangered birds through
its rst initiative, the Bali Starling
Conservation Project.

Since Nusa Penida is not safe

The villagers bury their childrens
placenta inside a coconut shell and
throw it onto this land. They believe
that it will make their kids stay in
this village forever. This tradition
explains the matchmaking culture in
this village, where a woman should
marry a man from the same village.
If they break the rule and choose to
marry a man outside of the village,
the groom-to-be should give two
cows as a dowry a tradition I
did not expect to discover within
only a few kilometers of my cycling
adventure.
Moving on, we passed through

always fascinated me. Their unparalleled
elegance as they gracefully navigate in the
open sea and silently penetrate the most
secluded bays always remind me of stories

of adventurous sailors, mesmerizing landscapes,

and unforgettable encounters with legendary
creatures and erce pirates. In this era of mass
tourism where everything goes in fast-motion
and thousands of airplanes bring people around
the world in a matter of a few hours, sailing in
a traditional boat is a tribute to the greatness of
nature and a humble and respectful way to explore
our planet.
It was with this spirit that my friends and
I boarded the Nataraja, excited to discover
the Togean Islands in Central Sulawesi on an
ancient yet so fresh mode of transportation with
unique power that connect its passengers to
the surrounding environment. As Ann Davison,
the rst woman to sail solo across the Atlantic

The fact that the Indonesian visual arts are very much
inuenced by Western techniques results in the true identity
of Indonesian artists sometimes being questioned. What does
it mean to be an Indonesian artist exactly? To answer this
question, Bloo Art Space is hosting the Wall of Indonesia
(WOI), a progressive art exhibition displaying
creations from 18 Indonesian artists curated by
Cata Odata. Agustian, Budi Agung Kuswara,
DP Arsa and Made Bayak are only a few of
the participants. Their artworks are displayed
on Bloo Art Spaces Living Wall, revealing the
meaning of being an Indonesian artist that
Indonesian artists are a group of people willing
to share, learn and work together in harmonious
synergy. This exhibition is divided into a series
of events the rst and second was hosted in
May while the third and fourth will be held on
June 4 and June 9 respectively. The nal and closing will be
held on July 2 at 4 p.m., where there will also be a discussion
about how the true identity of Indonesia is not fading away
on canvas even though the artists are adopting foreign
techniques.

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot

more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most
hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali
Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms,
but not gastro-related infections. A fever along
with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed
antibiotics.
Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic
drinks under various brand names are widely
available and are known to replenish body
hydration and replace uids. For discomfort,
diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea;
avoid fruits and spicy foods.
Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.
Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not
required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions
easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them
immediately.
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit
before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at
reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.
Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.
Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.
AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases
are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers
have multiple partners from around the world.
They are not checked for sexually transmitted
diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms,
available over the counter at pharmacies.
