running head: Program Evaluation of Cardiac Arrest Research Project Reflection

1. Become familiar with literature on Cardiac Arrest

2. Learn how to Evaluate a Program
3. Draft a survey instrument (in small groups)
4. Virtual Conference with U of W
5. Combine versions/Pre-Test the Instrument/Edits

This winter term, my Health, Happiness, and Human Rights class took on a cardiac arrest
research project with a group of students from the University of Washington. To prepare for our
part in the study, we had to familiarize ourselves with the difference between cardiac arrest and a
heart attack. We also had to familiarize ourselves with the materials used in the survey. This
stage falls under stage #1 of the eight stages set by our professor to complete. The second stage
of the program is to learn how to evaluate it. This meant that we had to learn how to write a
survey that encompasses all participants and to formulate questions to ask those who were not
involved in the survey. In small groups we then tackled the third goal, which is to actually begin
drafting the survey. This step combined with the fourth goal, which was to host a virtual
conference with the students from the university of Washington. During this virtual conference,
we asked the students their opinions on how we should go about creating the questions for the
surveyed participants. With their feedback, we were then able to start compiling a set of
questions from the class as a whole where we would then be able to break into small groups to
narrow down which ones wed like to use. In our mentor sessions, we worked together in smaller
groups to edit out any questions that werent applicable to the survey, re-word the phrasing if
something didnt make sense, and highlight the ones we did want to keep. So far my experience
has been good when working on this project. The students at the University of Washington
seemed really glad to have us participating in the data collection phase of their research project

and welcomed us with open arms. The students and their professor also seemed confident that we
would provide valuable information to their research project and seemed trusting in our
surveying capabilities. Im excited that weve been given such an interesting opportunity to work
with students from another university and to participate in a research project that could
potentially save lives!
