Introduction:
The Oculus Rift takes gaming to the next generation with its virtual world. The Rift
will be released in the beginning of 2016 making it the first consumer targeted
virtual reality headsets. Oculus has described it as "the first really professional PCbased VR headset. It was created and programmed by Palmer Luckey in Irvine,
California, United States.
Cost:
The cost for development was $2.5 million US dollars and each Oculus Rift is sold for
$350
Power Source:
The power source or how it charges is actually with an adapter you plug it in with.
Use:
There are many ways you could use the Rift
The number one thing you could use is for well gaming of course.
But you could also see many movies and videos in a 3-D virtual cinema
environment. Oculus Cinema actually allows multiple users to watch the movie at
the same time and can watch the same video in the same virtual space, seeing
each other as avatars and being able to interact and talk to one another while
watching the video.
You can also view movies you cant see on a basic monitor 3-D, 360 and virtual
reality movies. 360 videos can be watched by moving your head around.
You can also interact with other users and share something thats on the internet
and show it in your virtual reality. You can also talk and move objects.
It is also use in Industrials where could see exactly what a building will look like that
is impossible to see with monitors. Many architecture firms have been experimenting
with using the Rift for visualization and design as well.
In early 2015, Audi started using Rift Developer Kit 2's at dealerships to help
customers configure the car they are interested in, as well as to see what driving a
race in the car would be like.

NASA, DORA (Dexterous Observational Roving Automaton) and many other

cooperations use The Rift to control many other robots.

Changes:
The Rift has gone through many changes since the Kickstarter campaign. There
were development kits available for the public DK1 in 2012 and DK2 in 2014.There
was also the GEAR VR which you could place your Samsung phone as your screen
but now you dont need a Samsung phone to operate the oculus. They also changed
the straps from elasticated straps to flexible plastic harnesses which you could
adjust and now wear with glasses. The view has also gotten better in DK2 you
couldnt look behind you but now you can see 360.
Future Changes:
In the future there might have Virtual reality and augmented reality together so you
could wear your hardware everywhere. Augmented reality means is a live direct or
indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements
are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as
sound, video, graphics or GPS data. (Wiki)You might have seen those videos where
you place a phone with a spider in the screen on your hand and then your hand
appears on the screen thats Augmented Reality. Also they have been working on
Motion control and body tracking."It's going to take some time but we've been
putting a lot of research and development into virtual reality, and with body
tracking, hand tracking, finger tracking. All these things that you need to actually
make it feel like your body has been transported into to the virtual world and to be
able to interact with it in a natural way".-Palmar stated in an interview.
Materials:
There are many materials that were used and now are modified to fit better. There
were elasticated straps that are replaced by Flexible plastic harness. A DVI adapter
for laptops, graphic cards and a USB stick for the data. The headset also has
another USB stick to connect to the controllers. Constellation Tracking System that
feeds information to the headset. On the headset there are 2 pairs of lenses not
causing blurriness or sickness also a dial integrated to adjust lenses. Straps to
secure the headset on your head. The headset itself is light and comfortable. The
headset has rounded sides, flat slightly curved front and plastic or fabric on the
sides. There is an ARM processor and control chips for LEDS and an Adjacent
Reality Tracker that tracks the rift across all 3 dimensions. The ADT (adjacent reality
tracker) is made up of magnetometer (Magnetometers are measurement
instruments used for two general purposes: to measure the magnetization of a
magnetic material, or to measure the strength), gyroscope (Gyroscopes are useful
for measuring or maintaining orientation) and accelerometer (Accelerometer is a
device that measures proper acceleration ). The set comes with wireless XBOX
controller a selection of 2D and 3D games. As well as 2 wireless controllers called
Oculus Touch.

Moving Parts:
There are many moving parts in the Oculus. The headset moves as well as the
controllers. Your Vision/what you see in the headset changes. For example you
might be driving a car then making a sketch for a building etc. The Oculus also
controls other robots making them move/obey orders.

Facts:
-Oculus is teaming with Windows
-Rifts will work with Windows 10
- stream Xbox One games
-Oculus is putting $10 million toward indie game development
-Oculus in Latin means the eye
