ReturninAttendance:HowCollegeCanBeEconomicallyBeneficial
Collegeattendancehasrisensince1980fromtwentysixpercenttofortyonepercent,
morepeopleareattendingcollegeforalltherightreasons.Collegesprovideeducationanda
socialsettinginwhichyoucannetworkandeducateyourselfatthesametime.
Whilecollege
tuitionmaybeexpensive,itisworththeexpensebecauseyouwillearnmorethanahighschool
graduateandyoucanevenmajorinanartsfieldandmakealivingoffofit.
Manypeoplemayarguethatcollegeisnotinfactworththetuitioncostformanyreasons.
Onereasoncouldbethatstatisticsstatethatonlyonequarteroffreshmanfromworkingclass
familieswillcollectabachelor'sdegreebythetimetheyaretwentyfour(Tough).Thisbasically
meansthatmanystudentswhocomefromworkingclassfamilieswillnotobtainabachelor's
degreebytheageoftwentyfourandthereforewilldelaytheirgraduationtime.Moretimein
collegemeansmoretuitionmoneytheywillhavetopay,andnotmanystudentshavethe
privilegeorabilitytopayforcollegeinthefirstplace.Stayinglongerwouldonlyresultin
droppingoutwithhugesumsofdebt.
Althoughnoteveryoneagreesthatcollegeisworththetuitionmoney,therearesome
benefitsofattendingcollege.Acollegegraduatewhoworksfulltimeearnsabout$17,500more
thanahighschoolgraduate(IsCollege).Furthermorecollegeeducatedpeoplehavebeen
estimatedtohavetotallifetimeearningsofabout1million(Bennett,Wilezol75).Asstatistics

showifyouattendcollegeyouareboundtodobettereconomicallythanifyouonlygraduate
fromhighschoolwhichisahugeadvantageintoday'seconomy.Inordertogetthemostinyour
returnoninvestmentforcollegeyouneedtodoyourresearchandlookforaschoolwithinyour
financialrange.Forexample,ifyou'realowincomestudentthenperhapsHarvardmightbeout
ofyourfinancialreachsoyoumighthavetogotoUCSanDiego.UCSanDiegohasthehighest
returnoninvestmentforapublicschoolwithafouryeartuitioncostoflessthan$125,000
(Bennett,Wilezol109).Thisisessentiallythecollegetogotoifyou'relookingforauniversity
withahighROIbutwithalowtuitioncost.
Forthosenotinterestedinthehighlyprofitablemajorslikethemedicalfield,technology
orengineeringthereisanalternativetomajoringinaliberalartsfieldandstillearnawagewhich
youcanliveoffof.AccordingtoTheEconomistarticleIsCollegeWorthIt,ifyouattenda
universitywithaliberalartscoursethatisrigorousyouaremorelikelytobepaidquitewell.
Thisisquitegreatforpeoplewhomaynotbeinterestedinmajorsthathavecopiousamountsof
mathinvolved.TwouniversitiesthatfitthisprofilewouldbeUCSanDiegoandColumbia
University.Studentsplanningtomajorinanartsfieldshouldtaketheseschoolsinto
considerationwhenapplyingtocollege.
Collegeisworththetuitioncostandtimedespiteallthenegativestigmaithasbuiltupin
thepastfewyears.Attendingcollegeforlowincomestudentscanstatisticallybeabadideasince
notmanygraduatewithinfouryears.Althoughstatisticsshowlowontimegraduationratesfor
lowincomestudents,attendingcollegecanhelpthemmoveupthesocioeconomicladder.
Furthermoreattendingacollegewithanintenseartsprogramgivesstudentstheopportunityto
majorinsomethingtheylovewithoutfeelingstressedthatitmightnotpaythebills.Collegeisa
