Presentation
Demonstrated proper brushing and flossing
technique on Puppet
Disclosing tablets with mirror to view plaque
Group Brushing to remove biofilm
Discussed nutritious alternatives to sugary foods/
drinks
Shared The gross, disgusting, totally cool book
about teeth

Reflection
The presentation went really well, the children were
very excited about the disclosing tablets and getting to
see how they needed to angle the toothbrush in order to
remove the plaque. They were very intrigued by the
amounts of sugar in their standard lunch box (items like
Gogurt and fruit snacks) they showed a genuine
interest in learning how to floss and the importance of
flossing as opposed to brushing alone. Demonstrating
on the puppets worked well because they are large and
easy to see. Using the visual aid book The gross,
disgusting, totally cool book about teeth proved
invaluable with this age group.

Reflection
We were hoping more students would have been
present, but it was easy to demonstrate to a smaller
group. The group was not very interactive when we
were demonstrating oral hygiene, but when we
brought out the infant tooth brushes they did get
more excited to learn about their babys oral health
care and that was rewarding!

Reflections
Overall the presentation went very
smoothly. Many of the staff
members asked questions about
dentures and how to properly care
for them. They were very interested
in the pictures from the book that
we showed them, especially the
pictures about oral cancer. I think
we were able to provide them with
some techniques that they didnt
know about so hopefully they will be
able to apply them and help some of
their residents achieve better oral
health! After all only a few of them
knew that periodontal disease is
preventable!
