Aling Nena went to work with Aling Maring in the

rice paddies (payew) of Aling Maring for 2 days from
Monday & Tuesday, Aling Nena then again went to
work with Aling Maring in the rice paddies of the
later for 3 days from Wednesday to Friday, thereby
making it 5 days.

The following week, Aling Maring went to work also

with Aling Nena in the rice paddies (payew) of Aling Nena for 3 days (Monday - Wednesday), Aling
Maring then went again with Aling Nena to work in
Aling Nenas rice paddies for 2 days (Thursday - Friday), thereby making it also 5 days work equivalent
to that of Aling Maring.

***Ob-obbo System of Dacudac People is a way of helping one another on farm works not
renumerated by money but by equal working days agreed by each party not necessarily
within the week or month but within the year or farm working cycle.

If for instance, Aling Nena worked for 5 days for

Aling Maring, and on the other hand, Aling Maring
worked for only 4 days for Aling Nena. How many
days does Aling Maring owe to Aling Nena?

We could easily answer the question on the posed

problem, basing on the ob-obbo system. In the
illustration above, Aling nena is on the positive
side of the number line while Aling Maring is
on the negative side, the number of days of each
farmer was then presented in the illustration.

We could surmise that, (+2) + (+3) = (+5),

counting 2 days (from 0 to the right +2) from Monday to Tuesday and 3 days (from +2 to the right +5)
from wednesday to friday. The blue line stops at +5.
Also, (-3) + (-2) = (-5), counting 3 days (from
0 to the left -3) from Monday to Wednesday and 2
days (from -3 to the left -5) from Thursday to Friday. The blue line stops at (-5).
***From the illustration, going to the right of
the number line from 0, the signs are all positive.
Going to the left of the number line from 0, the
signs are all negative.

In the second illustration,

from 0 to right to +5
from +5 to the left -4

We could also surmise that, from the point of

origin number 0, we count 5 units to the right for
(+5) and then from (+5) we count 4 units to the left
for (-4), the number in the number line where the
counting stops will be the answer (+1). So, (+5) +
(-4) = (+1)
***These two igorots young at age know to
practice ob-obbo.
5

Further, (-3) + (+5) = ?

-5

-4

-3

-2

-1

+1 +2 +3 +4 +5

Starting at 0, we count 3 units to the left since (-3)

is negative, then from (-3), we counts 5 units to the
right since (+5) is positive. The counting stops at
(+2). So, (-3) + (+5) = (+2)

And, (+5) + (-2) = ?

-5

-4

-3

-2

-1

+1 +2 +3 +4 +5

Starting at 0, we count 5 units to the right since

(+5) is positive, then from (+5), we counts 2 units
to the left since (-2) is negative. The counting stops
at (+3). So, (+5) + (-2) = (+3)

Generalization:
ADDITION OF INTEGERS
RULE:
1. If the integers have the same sign, just add the positive
equivalents of the integers and attach the common sign to
the result.
2. If the integers have different signs, get the difference of the
positive equivalents of the integers and attach the sign of
the larger number to the result.

Roy went to work with the construction of the

bawi (small hut) of Shane which they have agreed on
ob-obbo system including the gathering of materials
needed for 7 days. In the contrary, Shane went also to
work with the construction of the bawi of Roy for only
5 days. How many days more will Shane work to complete the agreed ob-obbo?

Let the 7 days of Roy = +7, and the the 5 days of

Shane (-5) since the word contrary is opposite
