Centrifugal pumps are used to deliver water from a river to a reservoir. The elevation of the
reservoir is 100 m above the river. The total length of the pipe is 1500 m. The pipe diameter
D = 0.50 m and friction factor f = 0.020. All pumps are identical with the pump
characteristics defined by Hp = 150 200 Q2. Neglect minor losses.
Calculate the flow rate that one pump can deliver.
Sketch the system characteristic curves for two pumps in series and in parallel.
If a flow rate of 1 m3/s is desired, how many pumps will you need, and how would you
arrange them?

2. Water enters a reach of a rectangular channel with a width b = 10 m, y1 = 0.5 m, Q = 20 m3/s. It

is desired that a hydraulic jump occur upstream (location 2) of the sill and on the sill critical
conditions exist (location 3). Other than across the jump, losses can be neglected. Determine the
following
(a) Depths at locations 2 and 3,
(b) Required height of the sill, h,
(c) Resultant force acting on the sill,
(d) Sketch the water surface and energy grade line.

3. A sewer pipe of circular cross-section is made of concrete (n = 0.013). It is to convey water at

uniform flow condition such that the pipe flows half full, that is, y = d/2, where d = diameter of
the pipe. Given the pipe slope S0 = 0.01, and Q = 1.0 m3/s, find
(a) the required pipe diameter d,
(b) the Froude number of the flow
(c) If a hydraulic jump will occur, write the necessary equation for calculating the conjugate depth.

4. (a) A sanitary sewer with a flow of 0.3 m3/s enters Manhole 1 at the most upstream of a sewer
line. The distance downstream to Manhole 2 is 120 m. The finished street surface elevation
at manhole 1 is 100 m; at manhole 2 it is 100.2 m. Following the regulations for the sanitary
sewer design, find the required pipe size and pipe slope to carry the flow, and the invert
elevations of the pipe. (n = 0.013.)
(7 marks)
(b) Find the flow rates in the three storm sewer pipes from MH1 MH4. All inlet time ti = 15 min,
and the IDF relationship for the area is i = 1800/(tR + 20) (mm/h). All manholes are spaced at
120 m, and the flow velocity in each pipe is assumed to be 1 m/s. All sub-areas (A1 A4) are
composed of 1.0 hectare of lawn (C = 0.3) and 0.3 hectare of paved surfaces
(C = 0.9).
