Slavery

By: Brody and Ryan

Introduction
Slavery is when people here owned by others, using them to do their work. What
they did and where they lived were dictated by the slaves owner. Slavery played a
large part in history, and is fairly underlooked in some parts of the world such as
South America and Europe. Now it is a violation of basic human rights.

What did slavery look

like in different parts of
the world?

Slavery in North America

The first slaves were brought into America in 1619 to help maintain crops like
tobacco and cotton. Slaves were kept in the US throughout the 16th, 17th, and
18th centuries. The american civil war was fought over slaves. The north thought
slavery was bad and the south thought it was fine or good.
In the early 17th century, European settlers in North America brought African
slaves to america for a cheaper source of labour. Slaves in the south contributed
to of the population.(1) In The U.S. people from black descent were treated in
voting as 3/5th of a person. They had to be in their own line and they didn't have
nearly as many rights as white people.

Slavery in South America

Slaves from Brazil, Colombia and Bolivia had a lot harder time. The europeans
enslaved the natives and used them as free labour. The natives in these regions
rapidly decreased from all the slavery the europeans brought. The native slaves
also died from lots of diseases that the europeans had brought over. The native
peoples immune system wasn't used to those types of diseases and this caused a
lot of the death of the native. After the europeans noticed what an impact they
were doing to the native population they started to import slaves from africa.
Slaves in south america mostly took care of the crops. Some places in south
america were still brutal but they let the slaves have some freedom. They could
get married and read and write. Slavery in south america was one of the worst
places to be a slave.(2)

Slavery in Eurasia
Early slavery in Japan lasted between the Yamato and Sengoku periods, during
this time they tended to crop and livestock until it was banned by the politician
Toyotomi Hideyoshi, though it continued to exist. (1)During WW2, Japanese
soldiers used Japanese and Korean women as sex slaves and others as prisoners
of war used to build projects such as the Burma Railway.
Slavery in China has been known to exist since the Shang dynasty in which 5% of
the population were used as slaves and is still going on today though there have
been rules to combat it, people have found ways to work around it.
(2)Europes version of slavery didnt exist for very long, but instead was replaced
by serfdom.

Slavery in Africa
Slavery in Africa has existed for centuries, and is still prevalent today in some
countries and mostly began with rivaling tribes taking captives. The slave trade in
Africa had quite a few different forms, such as sacrifice, military and chattel, most
of which are common in other countries. The Atlantic Slave trade played a large
hand in shaping the African and American slaves lives. Europeans turned to
Africa as the Natives of America died to new diseases and thus using Africa as
their source for people.(4)

Conclusion
Every group of countries treated slaves differently, some having a large amount of
rights for them, while others treated them as 3/5ths of a person when it came to
voting. Slavery maintained most of the basic principles throughout the world and is
always boiled down to the same thing, they were used for free labour.
