ItwasthetaskoftheATApilotstodeliveraircraftfromfactoriesandmaintenanceunitstofrontlinesquadrons.Onlyduringearlymorningbriefing
didpilotsdiscoverwhattypeofaircrafttheywouldbeflyingandtowhichairfieldtheywouldgo.Theorganisationhaditsownairbornetaxi
service,pilotedbyfellowATApilots,todeliverorcollectthosedetailedtoferryanaircraft.
InitiallyMaureenDunlopflewwithNo6FerryPoolatRatcliffenearLeicester,butlatermovedtoHamblenearSouthampton,whichwasanall
femalepool.ItwastherethatshedeliveredmanySpitfirestosquadrons.Ononeoccasion,justaftershehadtakenoff,thecockpitcanopyblewoff
shemadeasuccessfullanding.Onanother,theengineofherArgusaircraftfailedandshewasforcedtolandinafieldwhereshediscoveredthata
pistonhadshattered.
WithallATApilotsflyingthesameaircraftandfacingthesamerisks,SirStaffordCrippsarrangedthatthefemalepilotsshouldreceiveequalpay
withtheirmalecolleaguesandthissmallgroupofwomenrightlyconsideredthemselvesaspioneersofsexequality.Many,includingMaureen
Dunlop,wishedthattheycouldhaveflownincombat,butthiswasconsideredasteptoofarandwasforbidden.Ithoughtitwastheonlyfair
thing,sheremarked.Whyshouldonlymenbekilled?
Shewasoneof164femalepilotsand,duringherthreeyearswiththeATA,sheflew38differenttypesofaircraft,amongthemtheSpitfire,
Mustang,TyphoonandtheWellingtonbomber.However,whenaskedwhichherfavouritewas,sheimmediatelyresponded:TheMosquito.

TheATAhadbeenfoundedinSeptember1939byGerarddErlanger,anairmindedmerchantbankeranddirectorofBritishAirways.But,withthe
endofthewar,itwasdisbandedovernight.Its600pilotshaddelivered308,567aircraftandmanyfeltthattheywereTheForgottenPilots.
MaureenDunlopwasoneofthefewfemalepilotstosecureaflyingjobwhenshelefttheATA.
TheseconddaughterofanAustralianwhomanaged250,000hectaresofsheepfarmsinPatagonia,Argentina,MaureenAdelChaseDunlopwas
bornonOctober261920inQuilmes,nearBuenosAires.ShehelddualBritishandArgentinenationalitiesand,thoughshewaseducatedatan
EnglishschoolinBuenosAiresforashorttime,shereceivedmostofhereducationfromagoverness.
Growingupsurroundedbyanimals,shebecameanexperthorsewomanandwouldoftengallopalongsidetrainsandwavetotheirdriversasthey
crossedthevastspacesofPatagonia.
DuringaholidayinEnglandin1936shetookflyinglessonsandthen,whenshereturnedtoArgentina,backdatedheryearofbirthinorderthatshe
couldlegallycontinueherflighttraining.DuringtheFirstWorldWar,herfatherhadtravelledtoEnglandtojointheArmy,andwiththeoutbreakof
theSecond,Maureensawnoreasonwhysheshouldnotfollowhisexample.ShetravelledtoEnglandwithhersister,whowouldworkfortheBBC.
Afterthewar,MaureenDunlopqualifiedasaflyinginstructoratRAFLutonbeforereturningtoArgentina,wheresheworkedasacommercial
pilot.SheinstructedandflewfortheArgentineAirForce,aswellashavingapartnershipinanairtaxicompany,continuingtoflyactivelyuntil
1969.
HerothergreatlovewashorsesandshewasfascinatedbyArabponies.Afterthewar,sheboughtherfirstArabandlaterbuiltupalargebreeding
operationknownasMillaLauquenStud.
In1955MaureenmetandmarriedSerbanPopp,aretiredRomaniandiplomat,andin1973theytravelledtoEnglandwheretheyboughtafarmnear
Norwich.ShesoondiscoveredthatherSecondWorldWardrivinglicencehadexpired.Althoughhercommercialpilotslicencewasstillvalid,she
neededtoresitherBritishdrivingtest.
ShesurprisedherchildrenbytakingfiveattemptstopersuadetheNorwichexaminerthatshewasfitandabletodriveonBritishroads.Theywere
surprisedshepassedsosoon.
InEnglandthestudgrewtomorethan50horses.Sheworkedtirelesslywithheranimals,carryingoutphysicalworkthatmenmuchyoungerthan
herfoundexhausting.ShebuiltupanoutstandingknowledgeofArabianbloodlines.
