History WWII

Now available in paperback, Elliot Carlsons award-winning

biography of Capt. Joe Rochefort is the first to be written
about the officer who headed Station Hypo, the U.S. Navys
signals monitoring and cryptographic intelligence unit at
Pearl Harbor, and who broke the Japanese navys code before
the Battle of Midway. The book brings Rochefort to life
as the irreverent, fiercely independent, and consequential
officer that he was. Readers share his frustrations as he
searches in vain for Yamamotos fleet prior to the Japanese
attack on Pearl Harbor, but share his joy when he succeeds
in tracking the fleet in early 1942 and breaks the code that
leads Rochefort to believe Yamamotos invasion target is
Midway. His conclusions, bitterly opposed by some top Navy
brass, are credited with making the U.S. victory possible and
helping to change the course of the war. The author tells the
story of how opponents in Washington forced Rocheforts
removal from Station Hypo and denied him the Distinguished
Service Medal recommended by Admiral Nimitz. In
capturing the interplay of policy and personality and the role
played by politics at the highest levels of the Navy, Carlson
reveals a side of the intelligence community seldom seen by
outsiders. A major reinterpretation of Rochefort, the book
makes clear the key role his codebreaking played in the
outcome of Midway.

Praise for Joe Rocheforts War:

Joe Rocheforts War will be required reading for Pacific war
scholars for decades to come.
Ian Toll, author of Pacific Crucible
The stuff of a wartime thriller. A codebreaker, stung by his
failure to predict the bombing of Pearl Harbor, divines the
enemys plans seven months later, enabling one of the great
American victories of World War II.

such newspapers and magazines as the Honolulu Advertiser
and the Wall Street Journal. His biography of Joe Rochefort won the 2012 Samuel Eliot Morison award for naval

MAN OF WAR LIFE

ROLLING HOME

By Charles Nordhoff

By William Morris Barnes

Abridged & Edited by Vincent McInerney

By Ron Westrum

In 1844, when barely 14, Charles Nordhoff

managed to talk his way into the U.S. Navy.
He was better educated than most of his
fellow seamen, and was well equipped to
describe what became a three-year aroundthe-world adventure. He was lucky in his
ship, USS Columbus, a large 74-gun ship of
the line on a diplomatic mission to China,
and then to Japan, in an abortive attempt to
open the latter to American trade. Nordhoff
visited many countries of south-east Asia
and South America, before finally returning
to Norfolk, Virginia, having crossed the
Equator six times.

Barnes was born in 1850 into a

ship owning family in St. Johns,
Newfoundland, and first went to sea while
still a boy. At the outbreak of the First
World War he volunteered for service even
though he was 64. During the war, he was
mined or torpedoed three times and spent
three days adrift in an open boat. After the
war, sea-dogs life became the basis for a
popular cartoon character and he published
the story of his adventures in a memoir
marked with a strong narrative flair. His
autobiography makes for riveting reading
and shows how exciting was the life of a
turn-of-the century sailor.

In the mid-1950s a small group of

overworked, underpaid scientists and
engineers, working on a remote base in the
Mojave Desert, developed a weapon no
one had asked for but that everyone was
looking for. Sidewinder is the story of how
that unorthodox team at China Lake, led
by the visionary Bill McLean, overcame
Navy bureaucracy and more heavily
funded projects to develop the worlds best
air-to-air missile.

Charles Nordhoff was a journalist and

writer, whose early years spent at sea,
inspired his celebrated novels, Mutiny on
the Bounty and Pitcairns Island.

William Morris Barnes (18501934)

spent most of his life at sea in a career that
spanned the transition from sail to steam.

Ron Westrum is a professor of sociology

and interdisciplinary technology at Eastern
Michigan University. He holds degrees
from Harvard and the University of Chicago and is also the author of Technologies
& Society as well as numerous articles on
science, technology and society. He lives
in Ann Arbor, MI.

BILLY MITCHELLS WAR

WITH THE NAVY

The Interwar Rivalry Over Air Power

By Thomas Wildenberg
When Billy Mitchell returned from WWI, he brought
with him the deep-seated belief that air power had made
navies obsolete. However, in the years following WWI,
the U.S. Congress was far more interested in disarmament
and isolationist policies than in funding national defense.
For the military services this meant lean budgets and
skeleton operating forces. Billy Mitchells War with the
Navy recounts the intense political struggle between the
Army and Navy air arms for the limited resources needed
to define and establish the role of aviation within their
respective services in the period between the two world
wars.
After Congress rejected the concept of a unified air service
in 1920, Mitchell and his supporters turned on the Navy,
seeking to substitute the Air Service as the nations first
line of defense. While Mitchell proved that aircraft could
sink a battleship with the bombing of the Ostfriesland in
1921, he was unable to convince the General Staff of the
Army, the General Board of the Navy, the Secretary of War,
the Secretary of the Navy, or Congress of the need for an
independent air force. When Mitchell turned to the pen to
discredit the Navy, he was convicted by his own words and
actions in a court-martial that captivated the nation, and was
forced to resign in 1925.

Destined for glory

Rather than ending the rivalry for air power, Mitchells

resignation set the stage for the ongoing dispute between the
two services in the years immediately before WWII. After
Mitchells resignation, the rivalry for air power between the
two services resurfaced when the Navys plans to procure
torpedo planes for the defense of Pearl Harbor and Coco
Solo were brought to the attention of the Army. The book
concludes with a description of the events surrounding
the Air Corps, abysmal performance at Pearl Harbor and
Midway followed by a critical assessment of how the
development of aviation was pursued by the Army and the
Navy after WWII.
Thomas Wildenberg is an independent historian/scholar
specializing in the development of naval aviation and logistics at sea. He has written extensively about the U.S. Navy
during the interwar period. His articles have appeared in
several scholarly journals including the Journal of Military
History, American Neptune, and Proceedings. He is also the

varied topics as replenishment at sea and the development
of dive bombing. Besides All the Factors of Victory and

FAR CHINA STATION

The U.S. Navy in Asian Waters, 18001898

By Robert Erwin Johnson
Far China Station was the first work to put nineteenth-century American
naval and diplomatic affairs in the Far East into clear perspective. Johnson
examines the origins of the East India Squadron, defines its import role in the
implementation of foreign policy and describes the dangers routinely faced
by the squadrons ships and sailors. Great and gallant ships move through the
pages from the famous Olympia and the majestic Columbus to the plodding
Palos. Naval heroes and the not-so-great, angry mobs, Japanese rebels, leaky
boilers, imperious officials and infirm admirals are set against a background of
uncertain anchorages, storms at sea, and the ravages of disease in the last years
of the Old Navy.
Robert Erwin Johnson was a professor of history at the University of
Alabama. He was also the author of Thence Around Cape Horn, Bering Sea
Escort and Rear Admiral John Rodgers. He died in 2008.

The Captain from Connecticut

The Life and Naval Times of Isaac Hull
By Linda M. Maloney
The Captain from Connecticut is the definitive biography of the man who
became a national hero as the commander of the USS Constitution in her
dramatic victory over HMS Guerriere in the War of 1812. While Isaac Hulls
outstanding seamanship was in evidence throughout his career, Maloney makes
the case that it is ironic that he is remembered for his tactical prowess in this
famous naval battle, because he was actually the most pacific of men.
A well-written and scholarly account, this biography traces the life and naval
career of War of 1812 hero Hull. Along with the naval action, the author pays
attention to details of Hulls administrative and diplomatic skills exemplified by
his role in connection with the Peruvian war of independence. The narrative also
sheds some light on the attitude of naval officers of the time and the life of the
common seamen. Library Journal.
Linda M. Maloney has been an assistant professor of history at the University of South Carolina and Texas Christian University. She lives in Enosberg
Falls, VT.

A MAGNIFICENT FIGHT
The Battle for Wake Island
By Robert J. Cressman
Soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese land-based bombers pounded
Wake Island, the American advanced base that was key to the U.S. Navys
strategy in the Pacific. Throughout the next two weeks, the Wake Island
garrison survived nearly daily bombings and repulsed the first Japanese
attempt to take the atoll. The determined defenders provided a badly needed
lift to American morale. Cressman was the first to make extensive use of
Japanese materials to identify the enemy order of battle and the roles each
unit played in the drama to provide a moving account of the heroism of the
defenders in the face if tremendous odds.

AN UNSUNG SOLDIER

The Life of Gen. Andrew J. Goodpaster

By Robert S. Jordan
Gen. Andrew J. Goodpaster was one of the leading soldier-scholars of his time.
He stood as a key figure among the American military and political personalities

ANTI-ACCESS WARFARE
Countering A2/AD Strategies
By Sam J. Tangredi
This is the first book to examine the concept of antiaccess and area denial warfare, providing a definitive
introduction to both conceptual theories and historical
examples of this strategy. Also referred to by the acronym
A2/AD, anti-access warfare has been identified in
American strategic planning as the most likely strategy
to be employed by the Peoples Republic of China or by
the Islamic Republic of Iran in any future conflict with
the United States. While previous studies of the subject
have emphasized the effects on the joint force and, air
forces in particular, this important new study advances the
understanding of sea power by identifying the naval roots
of the development of the anti-access concept. Rather
than arguing against the reliance on maritime forces
presumably because they are no longer survivable
Tangredi maintains that history argues that maritime
capabilities are key to countering anti-access operations.

From the Preface

Denying access to an enemy is a natural objective for any
defender, and should be considered an integral component
of any military campaign. However, the terms anti-access
and area denialas currently usedare specifically meant
to denote a strategic approach intended to defend against an
opponent that is judged to be of superior strength or skill in
overall combat operations.

The study of anti-access or area denial strategies for

use against American power projection capabilities has
strong naval rootswhich have been largely ignored by
the most influential commentators. Sustained long-range
power projection is both a unique strength of U.S. military
forces and a requirement for an activist foreign policy
and forward defense. In more recent years, the logic
of the anti-access approach has been identified by the
Department of Defense as a threat to this U.S. capability
and the joint force.
The conclusions in Anti-Access Warfare differ from
most commentary on anti-access strategy. Rather than
a technology-driven post-Cold War phenomenon, the
anti-access approach has been a routine element of grand
strategy used by strategically weaker powers to confront
stronger powers throughout history. But they have
been largely unsuccessful when confronting a stronger
maritime power. Although high technology weapons
capabilities enhance the threat, they also can be used to
mitigate the threat. Rather than arguing against reliance
on maritime forcespresumably because they are no
longer survivablethe historical analysis argues that
maritime capabilities are key in breaking the great walls
of countries like Iran and China.
Sam J. Tangredi is the Director of San Diego Operations for
the planning-consulting firm Strategic Insight and lives in
Coronado, CA. He is the author or editor of three books and
numerous articles and recipient of the U.S. Naval Institutes
Arleigh Burke Prize and the U.S. Navy Leagues Alfred

MILITANT ISLAMIST IDEOLOGY

Understanding the Global Threat

By CDR Youssef H. Aboul-Enein, USN

Foreword by Adm. James Stavridis, USN
In offering a comprehensive explanation of how Militant Islamists have
hijacked the Islamic religion, Aboul-Enein provides a realistic description
of the militant threat, which is far different and distinct from Islamist
political discourse and the wider religion of Islam. A key adviser at the Joint
Intelligence Task Force for Combating Terrorism, he argues that winning the
war against Militant Islamists requires a more complete understanding of
their ideology. Clearly defining the differences between Islam, Islamist, and
Military Islamist, he highlights how militant Islamist ideology takes selected
fragments of Islamic history and theology and weaves them into a narrow,
pseudo-intellectual ideology to justify their violence against Muslims and nonMuslims alike.
CDR Youssef H. Aboul-Enein, USN, is an officer in the Navy Medical Service
Corps and Middle East Foreign Officer. He currently is Adjunct Military Professor and Chair of Islamic Studies at the National Defense University. He is
stationed in the Washington, DC area.

A FORCE

The Origins of British Deception During the Second World War

By Whitney T. Bendeck
A Force explores an area of World War II deception history that has often
been neglected. While older studies have focused on the D-day deception
campaign and Britains infamous double-agents, this work explores the
origins of Britains deception activities to reveal how the British became such
masterful deceivers. This is the first work to focus exclusively on A Force
and the origins of British deception, examining how and why the British
first employed deception in World War II. More specifically, it traces the
development of the A Force organization, first formed in Cairo in 1941, as
the first British organization to practice both tactical and strategic deception
in the field.
Whitney. T. Bendeck has pursued a career in the field of history, focusing
on deception, after visiting Normandy in 1998. Holding a PhD in history,
she works for the International Affairs Program at Florida State University
where she is an assistant instructor, as well as the Director of Undergraduate Studies. She lives in Crawfordville, FL.

ASIAN MARITIME STRATEGIES

Navigating Troubled Waters
By Bernard D. Cole
Asian Maritime Strategies explores one of the worlds most
complex and dangerous maritime arenas. Asia, stretching
from the Aleutian Islands to the Persian Gulf, contains the
worlds busiest trade routes. It is also the scene of numerous
maritime territorial disputes, pirate attacks, and terrorist
threats. In response, the nations of the region are engaged in
a nascent naval arms race. In this new work, Bernard Cole,
author of the acclaimed The Great Wall At Sea, examines
the maritime strategies and naval forces of the regions
nations, as well as evaluating the threats and opportunities
for cooperation at sea. The United States Navy is intimately
involved in these disputes and opportunities, which threaten
vital American economic, political, and security interests.

The most useful geographical designation for maritime

Asia is the Indo-Pacific and Cole provides both a survey
of the maritime strategies of the primary nations of the
Indo-Pacific region as well as an evaluation of the domestic
and international politics that drive those strategies. The
United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, North Korea, South
Korea, China, the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam,
Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Iran, the
smaller Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf states are all surveyed
and analyzed. The United States, Japan, China, and India
draw the most attention, given their large modern navies
and distant strategic reach and the author concludes that
the United States remains the dominant maritime power in
this huge region, despite its lack of a traditionally strong
merchant marine. U.S. maritime power remains paramount,
due primarily to its dominant navy. The Chinese naval
modernization program deservedly receives a good deal of
public attention, but Cole argues that on a day-to-day basis
the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, as its navy is
named, is the most powerful maritime force in Far Eastern
waters, while the modernizing Indian Navy potentially
dominates the Indian Ocean.
Most telling will be whether United States power and focus
remain on the region, while adjusting to continued Chinese
maritime power in a way acceptable to both nations. No other
current or recent work provides such a complete description
of the Indo-Pacific regions navies and maritime strategies,
while analyzing the current and future impact of those forces.
Capt. Bernard D. Cole, USN (Ret.), teaches at the National War College in Washington, D.C. Coles previous
books include The Great Wall at Sea: Chinas Navy in the

Reading Program. He earned a PhD in history from Auburn

At war in distant waters

British Colonial Defense in the Great War

By Phillip G. Pattee
At War in Distant Waters investigates the reasons behind Great Britains combined
military and naval offensive expeditions outside of Europe during the Great War.
Often regarded as unnecessary sideshows to the conflict waged on the European
continent, Pattee argues that the various campaigns were necessary adjuncts to
the war in Europe, and fulfilled an important strategic purpose by protecting
British trade where it was most vulnerable. Since international trade was essential
for the island nations way of life, Great Britain required freedom of the seas
to maintain its global trade. While the German High Seas Fleet was a serious
threat to the British coast, forcing the Royal Navy to concentrate in home waters,
the importance of the island empires global trade made it a valuable target to
Germanys various commerce raiders, just as Admiral Tirpitzs risk theory had
anticipated.
Phillip G. Pattee, a retired U.S. Navy submarine officer, is an associate
professor of strategy and military operations at the U.S. Army Command and
Staff College. He has a PhD in military and diplomatic history from Temple
University and lives in Lansing, KS.

Edited By Tim Voelcker
Captain Philip Brokes victory in 1813 over Captain Lawrence of USS
Chesapeake, did much to restore the morale of the Royal Navy, shattered
by three successive defeats in single-ship duels with U.S. frigates, and
stunned the American nation which had come to expect success. The
near-fatal wound Broke received in hand-to-hand fighting as he boarded
the Chesapeake meant that he never served again at sea, but his work on
naval gunnery, paid for out of his own pocket, transformed Admiralty
thinking and led to the establishment of the British naval school of
gunnery, HMS Excellent. With 2013 the Bicentenary year of his victory,
this work is a reassessment of one of Britains finest frigate captains.
A fictionalized account of the encounter was used by Patrick OBrian
in his novels The Fortune of War and The Surgeons Mate, with Broke
presented as a cousin of Captain Jack Aubrey.
Tim Voelcker is the author of Admiral Saumarez Versus NapoleonThe Baltic 180712. He lives in the United Kingdom.

The Life of Pappy Boyington

By John F. Wukovits
The turbulent life of Gregory Pappy Boyington, the top U.S. Marine ace of
the Pacific, is captured in memorable detail by the acclaimed author of One
Square Mile of Hell: The Battle of Tarawa. Wukovits pulls no punches in
describing the controversial World War II fighter pilot, who was a hero to
some, and a villain to others in the Corps. Boyington was a little of each as
this biography of the legendary but complex figure shows. Called one of the
preeminent historians of the Pacific War, Wukovits paints a complete portrait
of Boyington that allows readers to understand the colorful World War II ace
as never before.
John F. Wukovits is a military expert specializing in the Pacific Theater of
World War II. He is the author of many books, including Eisenhower: A Biography; Pacific Alamo: The Battle for Wake Island; and American Commando:

THE FAST CARRIERS

The Forging of an Air Navy
By Clark G. Reynolds
This classic study is considered essential reading for its analysis of fast
aircraft carrier development in WWII. It provides a fascinating record not
only of the U.S. Navys metamorphosis from a battleship-oriented to a
carrier-centered fleet, but also of the heated debates that took place over the
changing naval strategy. With an insiders grasp of the famous individuals
involved, award-winning naval historian Clark G. Reynolds takes readers
from the war rooms of Washington to the flight decks of the Pacific. He
vividly describes the battles over the concept of fast carriers between the air
admirals and battleship admirals and offers little-known details gleaned from
personal interviews and private diaries.
Clark G. Reynolds was professor emeritus of the College of Charleston
in South Carolina. He is also the author of On the Warpath in the Pacific:
Admiral Jocko Clark and the Fast Carriers and Admiral John H. Towers: The

THE 100-GUN SHIP VICTORY

THE BATTLESHIP BISMARCK

By John McKay

By Jack Brower

The three-decker First Rate-Victory, was

the most successful 100-gun ship of
the period and the flagship of Nelson at
Trafalgar. First published in 1987 in the
acclaimed Anatomy of the Ship series,
100 Gun Ship Victory is now available in
paperback for the first time. Three hundred
perspective and three-view drawings,
with fully descriptive keys, illustrate
every detail of the ship, including hull
construction, masts and yards, armament,
rigging, decoration and fittings offer ship
buffs, historians, and model makers a full
view of the ship and her position in the
development of the First Rate.

The Bismarck is probably the most

famous warship of WWII. The German
battleship, 45,000 tons, was completed
in early 1941 and went on to sink the
Mighty Hood, pride of the Royal Navy.
After a dramatic chase around the North
Atlantic, Bismarck was finally dispatched
less than five months after she was
launched. Now available in paperback,
The Battleship Bismarck, as a volume in
The Anatomy of a Ship series, is the
finest documentation of this famous ship
ever published, providing a complete set
of superbly executed line drawings, both
the conventional type of plan as well as
explanatory views including large scale
plans on the interior flaps.

John McKay is an architectural draftsman

by profession and devoted over five years
and 3,000 hours to designing this book. He
lives in Vancouver, Canada.

Jack Brower researched this book in the

Bundesarchiv Kriegsmarine collection and
through the original records of the shipyard of Blohm and Voss in Germany.

NOMONHAN, 1939

The Red Armys Victory That Shaped World War II

By Stuart D. Goldman
Stuart Goldman convincingly argues that a little-known,
but intense Soviet-Japanese conflict along the ManchurianMongolian frontier at Nomonhan influenced the outbreak of
World War II and shaped the course of the war. The author
draws on Japanese, Soviet, and western sources to put the
seemingly obscure conflictactually a small undeclared
warinto its proper global geo-strategic perspective.
Nomonhan, 1939 describes how the Soviets, in response to
a border conflict provoked by Japan, launched an offensive
in August 1939 that wiped out the Japanese forces at
Nomonhan. At the same time, Stalin signed the GermanSoviet Nonaggression Pact, allowing Hitler to invade Poland.
The timing of these military and diplomatic strikes was
not coincidental, according to the author. In forming an
alliance with Hitler that left Tokyo diplomatically isolated,
Stalin succeeded in avoiding a two-front war. He saw the
pact with the Nazis as a way to pit Germany against Britain
and France, leaving the Soviet Union on the sidelines to
eventually pick up the spoils from the European conflict,
while at the same time giving him a free hand to smash the
Japanese at Nomonhan.

Praise for Nomonhan, 1939:

Compelling.
Publishers Weekly
This is a brilliant battle study highlighting the military and
political decisions, actions, and blunders.
Military Officer Magazine
Knowing what the little war triggered and Goldman
justifies his claims makes reading the detail of his
beautifully-crafted book even more compelling. And he gives
context which is important to us today in understanding Asia.
Great book!

Goldman not only demonstrates the linkage between the

Nomonhan conflict, the German-Soviet Nonaggression
Pact, and the outbreak of World War II, but also shows how
Nomonhan influenced Japans decision to go to war with
the United States and thus change the course of history.
The book details Gen. Georgy Zhukovs brilliant victory at
Nomonhan that led to his command of the Red Army in 1941
and his success in stopping the Germans at Moscow with
reinforcements from the Soviet Far East. Such a strategy
was possible, the author contends, only because of Japans
decision not to attack the Soviet Far East but to seize the
oil-rich Dutch East Indies and attack Pearl Harbor instead.
Goldman credits Tsuji Masanobu, an influential Japanese
officer who instigated the Nomonhan conflict and survived
the debacle, with urging his superiors not to take on the
Soviets again in 1941, but instead to go to war with the
United States.
Stuart D. Goldman is a scholar in residence at the
National Council for Eurasian and East European Research
in Washington, D.C. From 19792009, he was the senior
specialist in Russian and Eurasian political and military
affairs at the Congressional Research Service of the Library
of Congress. A resident of Rockville, MD, he holds a PhD
from Georgetown University.

THE UNSEEN WAR

Allied Air Power and the Takedown of Saddam Hussein

By Benjamin S. Lambeth
Foreword by General T. Michael Moseley, USAF (Ret.)
The Unseen War offers a comprehensive assessment of the role of allied air
power in the three weeks of major combat that ended the rule of Iraqs Saddam
Hussein in 2003. Unlike in the earlier Operation Desert Storm in 1991, the
contribution of air power in the second war was less readily apparent to most
observers, since the land offensive began concurrently with the air offensive
and the overwhelming majority of the deployed journalists who reported
on the war were embedded with ground units. Lambeths work fills a longstanding gap in the literature on modern warfare by telling, in full, the story
of the role of air power for the first time. This book is a RAND Corporation
Research Study sponsored and supported by the commander of U.S. Central
Command Air Forces, who was responsible for planning and conducting the
2003 air offensive.
Benjamin S. Lambeth is a Senior Fellow with the Center for Strategic and
Budgetary Assessments, who spent 37 years at the RAND Corporation. He
is the author of The Transformation of American Air Power and Air Power
against Terror. He lives in Paso Robles, CA.

THE LUCKY FEW

The Fall of Saigon and the Rescue Mission of the USS Kirk
By Jan K. Herman
As the Vietnam War reached its tragic climax in the last days of April 1975,
a task force of U.S. Navy ships cruised off South Vietnams coast. The Lucky
Few focuses on the role of USS Kirk in the rescue of not only the remnants of
the South Vietnamese fleet but also 32,000 refugees fleeing from Communist
forces to the safety of the Seventh Fleet ships offshore. Although the Vietnam
War ended in chaos and shame, the epic story of USS Kirk and her success in
rendering humanitarian assistance under inconceivable circumstances is one
of Americas shining military involvements. The Lucky Few brings to light
this relatively unknown heroic tale of a people caught up in the death throes
of a nation and their subsequent passage to freedom.
Jan K. Herman served as the Historian of the Navy Medical Department
and Special Assistant to the Surgeon General for 33 years. He also produced
an hour-long documentary, The Lucky Few, which has had international
acclaim since its premiere at the Smithsonian in 2010. He is the author of
Battle Station Sick Bay and lives in Takoma Park, MD.

Middle East Journal

The Liberty Incident Revealed is the complete and final

story about the Israeli Air Force and Navy attack on the
USS Liberty during the Six Day War in June 1967. Cutting
through all of the controversy and conspiracy theories about
Israels deadly attack, Cristol revises his well-regarded book
about the event with an expanded and in-depth analysis of all
of the sources, includingthe released tapes of the National
Security Agency (NSA) intercepts.

When Cristols first book on the subject, The Liberty

Incident, was published in 2002, there remained many
unanswered questions about Israeli Air Force audio tapes.
The NSA intercepts tapes had not yet been released in 2002.
Some conspiracy theorists alleged the NSA tapes would
prove that the Israeli attack was premeditated. Cristols
successful Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the
NSA, while resulting in the release of those tapes, has been
greeted by anti-Israel sources insisting that the NSA tapes are
fraudulent and are part of a larger conspiracy to deceive the
American public.

After a quarter of a century of intensive research in both Israel

and the U.S., researching all relevant archives from NSA, CIA
and the State Department, reviewing both formerly classified
and open source documents, and interviewing all then-living
individuals directly involved in the incident, the factual and
documentary record is clear. Cristol maintains that despite
the fact that all of the official records and transcripts are now
available for review, the truth has proven to be of no interest
to those individuals and organizations who are motivated by
hidden agendas, wish to keep conspiracy theories alive, or are
trying to feed sensational stories to the media. Documenting
his findings in six new chapters, Cristol establishes definitively
that the Israeli attack was a tragic mistake and presents a
convincing argument that will be regarded as the final chapter
in the long-simmering debate about this incident.
Capt. A Jay Cristol, USN (Ret.) JD, PhD, entered the U.S.
Navy as an aviation cadet in November 1951. As a naval aviator, he flew day and night from the aircraft carrier Princeton
during the Korean conflict. Upon return to civilian life, he
joined the Naval Air Reserve where, during the 1960s, he
flew volunteer missions to Vietnam. He wears the Meritorious
Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy
Achievement Medal among his more than a dozen military
decorations. After eighteen years as a naval aviator, he became
a Navy lawyer for another twenty years. In civilian life, he
concurrently practiced civil law for twenty-five years. He currently serves as a federal judge and teaches law as an adjunct
professor at the University of Miami. Cristol was named a Legal Legend by the Historical Society of South Florida in 2011.

[Cristols] research is stunningly complete.

COMMAND DECISIONS

Langsdorff and the Battle of the River Plate

By David Miller

By Geirr H. Haarr

By A. G. F. Ditcham

This is a superb survey of the fierce naval

struggles, from 1939 up to the invasion
of the Norway in April 1940. Beginning
with the sinking of the German fleet
at Scapa Flow in 1919, it then covers
the rebuilding of the Kriegsmarine and
parallel developments in the Royal Navy,
and in the European navies. Researched
extensively in German, British, and other
archives, the work is intended to paint
a balanced and detailed picture of this
significant period of the war when the
opposing naval forces were adapting to a
new form of naval warfare.

From first joining the Royal Navy in 1940

until the end of the campaign against
Japan, Ditcham was in the front line of
the naval war. After brief service in the
battlecruiser Renown off Norway and
against the Italians, he went into destroyers
and saw action in most European theatres,
including off the American beaches during
D-day. He ended the war in the British
Pacific Fleet preparing for the invasion of
Japan.

Geirr H. Haarr is a Norwegian and is also

the author of The Invasion of Norway and
The Battle for Norway.

Tony Ditcham was educated in the Training Ship HMS Worcester before having
a distinguished career in the Royal Navy
in the WWII, during which he served in
destroyers. He attended both Oxford and
London Universities.

This compelling new study of the Battle of

the River Plate focuses on Hans Langsdorff,
the commander of the German pocket
battleship Graf Spee. Written from the
German commanders point of view, Miller
provides a gripping narrative of his mission
to prey on merchant shipping. Operating
alone and thousands of miles away
from home with no prospect of support,
Langsdorff had to grapple with the enormous
burden of a lone command. This fascinating
reexamination of his actions and his
leadership confirms Langsdorff s reputation
as one of the most admired officers of the

much trust in the flawed design of the Graf
Spee as a pocket battleship.

THE SECRET WAR FOR THE

MIDDLE EAST

The Influence of Axis and Allied Intelligence

Operations during World War II
By Youssef H. Aboul-Enein and Basil Aboul-Enein
Although often overlooked in studies of World War II, the
Middle East was actually a key theater for the Allies on many
levels. Though the threat of direct Axis invasion by Rommels
Afrika Corps never materialized beyond the Egyptian Western
Desert, this did not limit the Axis from probing the Middle East
and cultivating potential collaborators and sympathizers from
Egypt, Iraq and Syria to Persia and Afghanistan. The Secret
War for the Middle East explores the infusion of the political
language of anti-Semitism, nationalism, fascism, and Marxism
that were among the ideological byproducts of Axis and Allied
intervention in the Arab world. The status of the Britishdominated Middle East was tailor-made for exploitation by Axis
intelligence and propaganda. German and Italian intelligence
efforts fueled anti-British resentments; their influence shaped
the course of Arab nationalist sentiments throughout the Middle
East. These actions left an indelible mark on the socio-political
evolution of the modern states of the Middle East and their
effects continue to be felt today.

Other titles by Youssef H. Aboul-Enein:

A relevant parallel to the pan-Arab cause was Hitlers

attempt to bring ethnic Germans into the fold of a greater
German state. In theory, as the Sudeten German stood on par
with the Carpathian German, so too, according to doctrinal
theory and propagandizing, did the Yemeni stand in union
with the Syrian in the imagination of those espousing panArabism. As an exploration of history demonstrates, this very
commonality proved to be a major factor in the development
of relations between Arab and Fascist leaders. The Arab
nationalist movement amounted to little more than a shapeless,
fragmented, counter position to British imperialism, imported
to the Arab East via Berlin and Rome for Nazi and Italian
fascist aspirations.

NAVAL ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS AND GUNNERY

By Norman Friedman
This book does for naval anti-aircraft (AA) defense what Friedmans Naval
Firepower did for surface gunneryit makes a highly complex but historically
crucial subject accessible to the layman. It traces the growing aerial threat from its
inception in WWI and the response of each of the major navies down to the end of
WWII, highlighting in particular the underestimated danger from dive-bombing.
The work considers what effective AA fire-control required, and how well each
navys systems actually worked, analyzing the weapons, how they were placed
on ships, and how this reflected the tactical concepts of naval AA defense. All
important guns, directors and electronics are represented in close-up photos and
drawings, and lengthy appendices detail their technical data. It is, simply, another
superb contribution to naval technical history by its leading expert.
Norman Freidman is a prominent naval analyst and the author of more than
thirty books, including Naval Firepower, British Cruisers of the Victorian Era,
Naval Weapons of World War One, and British Destroyers. He lives in New

BRITISH BATTLESHIPS, 18891904

New Revised Edition
By R.A. Burt
This volume completes the reissue of R. A. Burts magnificent three-volume
history of British battleships, and it covers the pre-dreadnought era which has,
in recent years, acquired a new and fervent following. In this new volume, the
author presents full details of design and construction, armament, protection,
machinery and performance, all backed up with accurate data tables listing
design figures, trials results, and full particulars at different stages in the
ships careers. The history of each battleship is recounted, especially their
major contribution in WWI, where they bore the brunt of the action at the
Dardenelles, bombarded the Belgium coast, patrolled the North Sea and
the Channel, reinforced the Italian Fleet, and served in East Africa, the East
Indies and the White Sea. Most were extensively modified during the war and
this variety has made them of special interest to the historian, enthusiast and
ship modeler. With the addition of many new photographs from the authors
massive collection, this new edition is a great addition to every naval library.
R. A. Burt is the noted author of several works, including British Battleships,

PROCEED TO PESHAWAR

The Story of a U.S. Navy Intelligence Mission

on the Afghan Border, 1943
By George J. Hill
Proceed to Peshawar is a story of adventure in the Hindu Kush Mountains and
of a previously untold military and naval intelligence mission during World
War II by two American officers along 800 miles of the Durand Line, the
porous border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. They passed through the
tribal areas and the princely states of the North-West Frontier Province, and
into Baluchistan. This appears to be the first time that any American officials
were permitted to travel for any distance along either side of the Durand Line.
Many British political and military officers believed that India would soon be
free, and that the Great Game between Russia and Britain in the nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries would then come to an end. Some of them
thought that the United States should, and would, assume Britains role in
Central Asia, and they wanted to introduce America to this ancient contest.
George J. Hill graduated from the Harvard Medical School and served in the
U.S. Marine Corps and the Public Health Service, retiring as a captain in the
Navy Reserve in 1992. He lives in West Orange, NJ.

AT THE CROSSROADS BETWEEN

PEACE AND WAR
The London Naval Conference of 1930

Edited by John H. Maurer and Christopher M. Bell

This volume provides fresh perspectives on the international strategic
environment between the two world wars. At London in 1930, an
important arms control agreement was concluded by the United States,
Great Britain and Japan to control the international competition in naval
armaments. In particular, agreement was reached about how many
heavy cruisers the major naval powers could possess. On the surface,
the London Conference was a successthe great powers cooperated
to control their rivalries in armaments. But France and Italy refused to
participate in the treaty, and within a few years growing antagonisms
among the great powers manifested itself in the complete breakdown of
the interwar arms control regime negotiated at London.
John H. Maurer serves as the Alfred Thayer Mahan Professor of Sea Power
and Grand Strategy in the Strategy and Policy Department at the Naval War
College. Christopher M. Bell is professor of history at Dalhousie University
in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Journal of William Speiden Jr.,

18521855

With Commodore Perry to Japan offers a

personal account of Commodore Matthew
Calbraith Perrys expedition to Japan
through the eyes of a sixteen-year-old
pursers clerk of the USS Mississippi. The
documentary edition, endorsed by the
National Historic Publications & Records
Commission, provides excellent coverage
of both the political mission of the Perry
expedition, the opening of relations with
Japan, and of the social history of a naval
warship as well.

The Wreck of the Royal Mail Ship Rhone

in St. Narcisos Hurricane of October 1867

The RMS Rhone, just three years old

and queen of the Royal Mail Steam
Packet Companys fleet, sank in the
great St. Narciso hurricane of late
October 1867. The category three storm
bored a line east to west atop the Antilles
and drove Rhone aground on Black
Rock in the shallows off Salt Island. The
impact and the subsequent explosion
of her boiler instantly tore the ship in
half. One hundred twenty-four victims
drowned or were scalded to death in her
engine room.

Col Robert Debs Heinl Jr., USMC (Ret.),

a graduate from Yale University in 1937,
fought at Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, and in
Korea. He wrote three books and retired in
1964 after 27 years of service. Prior to his
death in 1979 he was a nationally syndicated columnist.

John A. Wolter is a former chief of the

Library of Congress Geography and Map
Division. David A. Ranzan is the University Archivist at Salisbury University. The
late John J. McDonough was a manuscript
historian at the Library of Congress from
1961 to 1998.

Andrew C. A. Jampoler is the author

of several books including Congo and
Horrible Shipwreck! He lives in Loudoun

CIRCLE OF TREASON

A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men

He Betrayed
By Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille
While there have been other books about Aldrich Ames,
Circle of Treason is the first account written by CIA agents
who were key members of the CIA team that conducted
the intense Ames Mole Hunt. Sandra Grimes and Jeanne
Vertefeuille were two of the five principals of the CIA team
tasked with hunting one of their own and were directly
responsible for identifying Ames as the mole, leading to his
arrest and conviction.
One of the most destructive traitors in American history,
CIA officer Aldrich Ames provided information to the Soviet
Union that contributed to the deaths of at least ten Soviet
intelligence officers who spied for the United States. In this
book, the two CIA officers directly responsible for tracking
down Ames chronicle their involvement in the hunt for a mole.
Considering it their personal mission, Grimes and Vertefeuille
dedicated themselves to identifying the traitor responsible for
the execution or imprisonment of the Soviet agents with whom
they worked. Their efforts eventually led them to a long-time
acquaintance and coworker in the CIAs Soviet-East European
division and Counterintelligence Center, Aldrich Ames.

Praise for Circle of treason:

Circle of Treason has the advantage of being written by two
intelligence professionals, not by academics or journalists, and
thus is an authoritative account of the Soviet sources that were
providing the U.S. with invaluable information during the Cold
War until Ames betrayed them. Because classified material on
operational cases was going to be made public, the CIA took
over three years to approve the books publication. The authors
note that 90% of the disputes were resolved in their favor.
The Wall Street Journal
What makes this volume interesting is that it was written by
longtime CIA insiders, who saw firsthand how the agencys
network inside the Soviet Union crumbled. They write
authentic sketches of agents working for the CIA who were
betrayed by Ames.
The Washington Post

Not only is this the first book to be written by the CIA

principals involved, but it is also the first to provide details
of the operational contact with the agents Ames betrayed.
The book covers the political aftermath of Amess arrest,
including the Congressional wrath for not identifying him
sooner, the FBI/CIA debriefings following Amess plea
bargain, and a retrospective of Ames the person and Ames the
spy. It is also the compelling story of two female agents, who
overcame gender barriers and succeeded in bringing Ames
to justice in a male-oriented organization like the CIA. Now
retired from the CIA, Grimes and Vertefeuille are finally able
to tell this inside story of the CIAs most notorious traitor and
the men he betrayed.
Sandra V. Grimes was a twenty-six year veteran of CIAs
Clandestine Service who spent the majority of her career
working against the former Soviet Union and Eastern
Europe. She joined the CIA in July 1967 shortly after
graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in Russian. A mother of two grown daughters and four
grandchildren, she currently lives in Great Falls, Virginia,
with her husband of forty-plus years.
Jeanne Vertefeuille was a CIA officer during the Cold
War 1954-1992, specializing in the Soviet target, particularly in the Counterintelligence area. She led the small task
force which resulted in the arrest of Soviet mole Aldrich
Ames in 1994. Subsequently she served on contract as an
analyst 1993-present and died just after the publication of
the book in hardcover.

Arthur Marders critically acclaimed five volume series, From the Dreadnought to Scapa Flow, represents one of the finest contributions
to the literature of naval history since the work of Alfred Mahan. These new editions of the series are published with a new introduction by
Barry Gough, distinguished Canadian maritime and naval historian, that provide an assessment of the importance of Marders work and
anchors it firmly amongst the great naval narrative histories of this era.
His naval history has a unique fascination. To unrivalled mastery of sources he adds a gift of simple narrative . . . He is beyond praise.

FROM THE DREADNOUGHT TO SCAPA FLOW

By Arthur J. Marder

By Arthur J. Marder

The first volume in this series covers many facets of the history of
the Royal Navy during the pre-war decade, including the economic
and political background such as the 1906 Liberal Government
hostility towards naval spending, the German naval challenge, the
arms race and the subsequent Anglo-German rivalry, and, finally, the
British plans for the blockade of the German High Seas Fleet.

The second volume in the series begins with the embarrassing

escape of the German ship Goeben, before moving on to the defeat
at Coronel, soon avenged off the Falkland Islands. Marder then turns
his attention to the humiliation of the Dardenelles and the submarine
menace, before looking in detail at the whole question of British
strategy and at how the German High Seas Fleet was to brought to
battle at Jutland and dealt a crushing blow.

Volume II: The War Years: To the Eve of Jutland, 19141916

Arthur J. Marder, a meticulous researcher, teacher and writer was born in 1910. He was a highly regarded American historian specializing in

PUSHING THE LIMITS

The Remarkable Life and Times of Vice Adm. Allan Rockwell

McCann, USN
By Carl LaVO
Vice Admiral Allan Rockwell McCann left no reminiscences that might reveal
a deeper sense of his extraordinary service, but naval historian Carl LaVO has
filled that void by writing this revealingand often inspiringbiography.
Among McCanns many accomplishments: Served as liaison officer for the
modification of the antiquated O-12 submarine into the privately-leased
Nautilus that made the first attempt to sail beneath the Arctic ice shelf in 1931;
pioneered the McCann Submarine Rescue Chamber; directed fire from the
sub tender Pelias at Japanese aircraft attacking Pearl Harbor; commanded
the battleship Iowa during the Battle of Leyte Gulf; was Chief of Staff of the
Navys 10th Fleet that stymied a last ditch effort to attack North America via
U-boats; headed the Navy task force that transported President Truman to the
Potsdam conference; and as ComSubPac was aboard the first submarine to
navigate under the polar ice in 1947. This book is an overdue appreciation of a
significant admiral who has been all but ignored in naval history.
Carl LaVO is the author of three previous books including The Galloping
Ghost: The Extraordinary Life of Submarine Legend Eugene Fluckey. He lives
in Bucks County, PA.

SHIP MODELS FROM KITS

HUNTING THE ESSEX

By David Griffith

By Midshipman Allen Francis

Gardiner

Basic and Advanced Techniques for Small

Scales

Now in paperback this standard of building

ship models deals with the latest materials
and techniques. These new materials have
prompted innovative techniques, which
are comprehensively demonstrated in this
new manual. Designed for those wishing
to achieve the best results from their ship
kits in the 1:700 to 1:350 range of scales,
it uses step by step photographs to take the
reader through the building of two models,
one in plastic and one in resin, from basic
construction, fittings and detailing, to
painting, finishing and display.

A Journal of the Voyage of HMS Phoebe,

18131814

Edited by John S. Rieske

This previously unpublished journal

provides an eyewitness account of the
epic chase of the USS Essex that was
the inspiration for the film Master &
Commander. In 1813 the British frigate
Phoebe set out on a secret mission to
counter the campaign by the frigate USS
Essex, which had almost annihilated the
lucrative British whaling trade in the south
Pacific. After an epic voyage and a nervewracking rounding of Cape Horn, Phoebe
tracked her prey to neutral Valparaiso
where the American frigate was blockaded.
A cat-and-mouse game that lasted months
ended with an attempted break-out and a
bloody battle in which Essex was captured.

SHIP DIORAMAS

Bringing Your Models to Life

By David Griffith
Ship Dioramas is about the art of
displaying waterline ship models. Ship
models that do not show the full hull and
are not mounted on an artificial stand
cry out for a realistic setting. This is the
province of the diorama, which at its
most effective is a depiction of a scene or
an event in which the ship model takes
center stage. This book devotes much of
its space to what works and what does
not, and illustrates with photographic
examples why the best maritime dioramas
have visual power and how to achieve that
impact.

David Griffith builds models in many

scales and materials and is also the author
of Ship Modeling Simplified and Ship Models: How to Build Them.

John S. Reiske is a retired American academic who discovered the manuscript of

this journal by a Royal Navy Midshipman
who served in the Phoebe.

David Griffith builds models in many

scales and materials, but has won many
awards for his 1:350 and 1:700 scale resin
warships. He publishes his own newsletter and Ship Models from Kits was his first
book.

GUNS DID ROAR

Revolutionary Georgia Fights to Defend Its Waterways, 17761779

By Virginia Steele Wood
During the American Revolution, Georgia, the youngest, smallest, weakest,
and most remote colony, was vulnerable to attack from British East Florida,
hostile Indians, loyalists to the west and northwest, and from British naval
ships and privateers cruising along the Atlantic coast. Defense of Georgias
segment of the Inland Passage and its many rivers was of paramount concern.
The states galleys, four underwritten by the Continental Congress and built
by Philadelphia shipwrights in Savannah, constituted the states principal
vessels of its small navy. Stoutly constructed, highly maneuverable in confined
waters, and armed with very heavy ordnance, they could outgun many small
blue-water sailing vessels. By drawing upon many long-dormant, unpublished
British documents, Wood provides the first book written about Revolutionary
Georgias navy and casts new light on the neglected contribution of state
navies to the war.
Virginia Steele Wood was the Library of Congress Naval & Maritime History Reference Librarian for 32 years. Her publications include the awardwinning, Live Oaking: Southern Timber for Tall Ships. She has served on the
Secretary of the Navys Advisory Subcommittee on Naval History, and is a
member of the Board of Directors, Naval Historical Foundation.

NEVER SURRENDER

Dramatic Escapes from Japanese Prison Camps

By Mark Felton
Of the tens of thousands of Allied personnel captured by the Japanese during
late 1941 and early 1942 only a small number attempted to escape rather than
suffer brutality, starvation and very possibly death as POWs. Escapers were
Westerners in an alien, hostile land; the terrain and climate were extreme;
disease was rife; their physical condition was weak; there was every chance
of starvation and betrayal and, if captured, execution was a near certainty
and the harshest punishment inevitable. While few succeeded these escape
attempts by officers and men of the British, Commonwealth and U.S. armed
forces offer an inspiring account of the human spirit.
Mark Felton teaches at Fudan University, Shanghai and is the author of The
Slaughter at Sea, Japans Gestapo, and The Real Tenko.

NAVAL INNOVATION for the 21st Century

The Office of Naval Research Since the End of the Cold War
By Robert Buderi
The Office of Naval Research, known widely as ONR, was formed in 1946
primarily to support the pursuit of basic science to help ensure future U.S.
naval dominance. After the Cold War, the U.S. entered a period of greater
fiscal constraints and the concept of warfare largely shifted from super-power
conflicts to an era of asymmetric warfare.
Naval Innovation is a narrative account of ONRs efforts to respond to this
transformation amidst increasing pressure to focus on programs directly
relevant to the Navy, but without sacrificing the pursuit of fundamental
science. Told through the eyes of the admirals leading ONR and the
department heads who oversee key programs, it holds great lessons and
insights for how the U.S. government should fund and maintain military R&D
in a new era of smaller conflicts in unconventional arenas.
Robert Buderi is founder and editor in chief of Xconomy, an online business
news company. Formerly editor in chief of Technology Review magazine and
BusinessWeeks technology editor, he is the author of Guanxi, Engines of Tomorrow and The Invention That Changed the World. He lives in Cambridge, MA.

LEADERSHIP EMBODIED, 2ND EDITION

The Secrets to Success of the Most Effective Navy and Marine

Corps Leaders
Edited by Lt. Col. Joseph J. Thomas
Now in its second edition, Leadership Embodied is an inspiring collection of
short biographical essays focusing on Navy and Marine Corps leaders who
have achieved notable accomplishments by employing certain characteristics,
traits, and virtues. While leaders are present in nearly every human undertaking,
leadership in this work is illustrated through the most dramatic and demanding
of all endeavorswar and the preparations for war. Wartime challenges are
more monumental and exacting because of their life and death nature. All of
these individuals have been selected because their case studies demonstrate the
very essence of leadership through their dramatic shaping of todays institutions,
practices, and customs within the naval services. Their contributions should be
required reading for any student of leadership. Each has a particular lesson for
midshipmen on their journey to becoming U.S. Navy or Marine Corps officers.
Dr. Joseph J. Thomas is the USNA Class of 1961 Chair and Distinguished
Professor of Leadership Education in the Naval Academy Leadership Education and Development Division. A retired Marine, he is past Director of the
John A. Lejeune Leadership Institute at Marine Corps University and lives in
