The life expectancy

The life expectancy with children with

babies diagnosed with congenital
hypothyroidism is a long and normal, as
long as they receive early treatment. If they
don't receive early treatment then it could
result in severe mental retardation and
stunted growth.

How common is it?

Congenital hypothyroidism is rather
common occurring in 1 in ever 2,000 to 1 in
4,000 births.

Who it affects & Causes

Congenital hypothyroidism is twice as likely
to occur in girls than in boys. In places where
there is low iodine deficiency, such as China,
Zaire, Peru, and Bangladesh. And if both the
parents carry a trait of congenital
hypothyroidism, then there is at least a 1 in 4
chance of the child inheriting this condition.
The parents do not need to carry or have
been affected by congenital hypothyroidism
to have an affected child about 2-5% of
cases are inherited. It is believed to be cause
by chromosomes: 15, 6, 5, 2, 19, 8, 17, 1, 14 .
Congenital hypothyroidism is caused by
having low thyroid and is not necessarily
always genetic.
