Lines, Angles, Triangles, Quadrilaterals

Lesson Title/Topic: Review of Geometric Attributes and Generalizations

Target Concept: Geometric Attributes and Generalizations
Standards/Rationale: TEKS 111.6.(b)(6)(A) identify points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, and
perpendicular and parallel lines;
(B) identify and draw one or more lines of symmetry, if they exist, for a two-dimensional figure;
(C) apply knowledge of right angles to identify acute, right, and obtuse triangles; and
(D) classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular
lines or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size.
Lesson Objectives: TLW create a building or
city skyline using different angles, triangles,
and shapes quadrilaterals with 90% accuracy.

Assessment: Completed picture of building or

city skyline

Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, PowerPoint Jeopardy, purple, green, blue, and orange flash
cards, post-it notes, pencils, rulers, construction paper, architectural magazines, black markers,
geometric wooden blocks and folding shape blocks.
Lesson Cycle: (Direct instruction)
The teacher will:
Focus/Mental Set:
Tell students they will do Timed Pair
Share with shoulder buddy.
Announce instructions:
o Students will work with
shoulder buddy;
o Announce a topic and one
person will have 2 minutes to
tell their partner everything
about the topic;
o Announce a new topic and
students will switch roles and
repeat.
Ask students to turn to shoulder buddy
Announce topic, triangles and start
timer.
Announce topic, quadrilaterals and
start timer.

The student will:

Turn to shoulder buddy.

o First person tells about triangles,
second person listens.
o Switch roles and talk/listen
quadrilaterals.

Tell students today is a review over

lines, angles, triangles, and
quadrilaterals.
Teacher Input:
Open PowerPoint review on flash drive
in Math<Geometry<Lines, Angles,
Triangles & Quad. Review.
Tell students to make a flash card for
each slide.
o Flash card includes name or
picture on one side and
definition on the other side.
Lines (5) purple: line, parallel,
perpendicular, ray, and segment
review each slide.
Angles (4) green: Right, acute, obtuse,
straight angle review each slide.
Triangles (5) orange: equilateral,
isosceles, obtuse triangle, scalene,
right, total degrees.
Quadrilaterals (4) blue: number of
sides/degree, rectangle, rhombus,
trapezoid.
Miscellaneous: hexagon, pentagon
For example, Right triangle: identify the
right angle, specify it is the key to
knowing the triangle.
Guided Practice:
Announce to class they will play
Jeopardy and ask to put away all
materials.
Give instructions:
o Students will work with table
group.
o Score will be kept on the board.
o Begin with lines for 100.
o To answer the whole group will
raise hand with a thumbs up.
o Whoever answers first and
correct get to ask for the next
question.
o Must answer in a question.
o Group can wager as many
points on the final question.

Listen to instructions.

Make blue flashcards.

Make pink flashcards.
Make green flashcards.
Make purple flashcards.

Make orange flashcards.

Put away materials.

o Group with most points wins.

o No daily double.
Start game
If class cannot answer question, review
information and provide correct answer
Independent Practice:
Pass out construction paper and rulers.
Tell students they will draw a building
or a city skyline incorporating different
angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals.
o Must include isosceles, right,
scalene, acute and obtuse triangles.
Rhombus, square, rectangle,
trapezoid, pentagon, and hexagon.
o Must be drawn with straight edge
or ruler on construction paper.

Play game.

Get supplies out.

Complete drawing.
Turn in drawing.
Closure:
Pass out one post-it note per student.
Tell students that to be dismissed, they
will need to draw one type of triangle,
label it and post it to the door.
Give students 1 minute 30 seconds to
complete task.
Options:
Enrichment:
Students analyze use pictures from
architectural magazines for various geometric
lines, angles, and shapes. Students will also
analyze for 3 dimensional shapes.

Modifications/Correctives:
Follow individual IEPs
References:

Receive post-it note.

Draw triangle, label and post to the

door.

Reteach:
In a small group guided by the teacher,
students will use geometric wooden and
folding shape blocks to explore lines and
angles. Students will examine blocks, trace
them, and label various parts with the teacher.
